hi I'm Ben come with me as I go through the orientation and training with Animal Care at Trent prior to today I completed online modules on blackboard which gave me some background information about Animal Care policies and operations before my in-person train this is the pre-training any undergrad or graduate student or staff must go through to be able to do research with animals here we are at Animal Care in the Life and Health Sciences building we're meeting with Jason Allen the manager of animal care who trains anyone who wants to do research with animals he is taking me through important procedures and safety protocols that maintain a certain standard for running the facility along the way we meet Chloe the sulfur crested cockatoo Chloe is not used in research but has done some educational work with students and also loves to dance with them to go into the research Labs we need to put on clean protective gear including shoe covers and a lab coat for this training we are going into the rodent research facilities Jason is taking us through different spaces with interesting equipment including a QED and contextual theater conditioning box also a water maze fun fact that I learned is that rats love to swim this water maze is used for research related to memory finally we meet Cagney and Lacey who are educational rats Cagney and Lacey are registered under Jason's teaching protocol a requirement for using animals for teaching purposes first I put my hand into the cage to see how comfortable I was around Cagney and Lacey then he told me to pet them to get used to touching them then Jason showed me how to properly pick up and support a rat it took me a few tries to feel confident picking them up and to learn the proper hold finally I picked them up and Jason talked about the importance of getting your rats used to you before starting your research before we left I got to give Cagney and Lacey some fruit loops to say thank you for their time and helping me learn more about everything that goes into animal research
