how do you get a fat tire e-bike in australia without being ripped off the joys of cycling it's great fun tune in not everything of course is cookies and cream here in australia when you buy something from china because delivery takes a long time things are really slowing uh deliveries around the world at the moment uh workers off with uh covered all that seaward really slows things down there's ships container ships sitting in queues out on the seas waiting to unload my bike took about six weeks from the time of purchase to the time of delivery okay so uh it's a little bit long it's a bit longer than usual but these are unusual times however it did get here a lot of people i've seen they try to lift the bike out of the box really really difficult so here's a tip cut the front of the box open don't slash the tire while you're doing it no i didn't folding fat tyre e-bikes don't you love them well a lot of people do these things sell like hotcakes around the world and uh here in australia they're also pretty popular however most of the information we get on folding fact bikes comes from uh youtube reviews from america so that's a bit difficult for us in australia because uh what you can get in america often doesn't end up here what do we do here in australia when we want a folding fat tyre e-bike so i've just picked up this little beauty and i'll run you through some features but first let me run you through a few names because i've covered up the brand okay so let me see if you can guess which one of these this thing is him is it the mate x is it the crooked path is it a luna eclipse is it a polaner is that a vitalin veteran not sure how i pronounced that one or is it a photo or is it a fido who knows well let me run you through those because they're all much the same they all have a very very similar frame they all uh play around with their little changes in suspension some might have mechanical breaks some might lift their game a bit there different seats different handlebars different amperages on their battery just about all of them come with a 750 watt motor and really a lot of them they don't make them themselves they import all the parts on spec from places like china assemble them slap their sticker on it and there you go there's very little difference between them all and one thing they're all the same at is they're expensive here in australia if you can get them let's run through that list the matex if you could get it here and you can't it would cost us three thousand australian dollars the crooked path i can get that for two thousand six hundred and fifty dollars the luna two thousand two hundred dollars the polana can't get it here only in the u.s or canada it would cost me twenty two hundred dollars the vitalin can't deliver it full stop the fedo can't deliver it full stop 2200 bucks anyway but they can't so here in australia all these bikes we see reviewed on youtube by americans totally useless to us it's a ridiculous price or we can't get them so what is this how did i get this and which brand is it well it's none of those ones that i read out because i wouldn't pay that much or i wouldn't be able to get it so direct from china bought it off ebay this is the red star which is basically the same as all the others just a different sticker on it there are some other differences okay it does have a different handlebar setup than most most of them have that big riser thing that folds down okay this is a foldable bike does have front suspension shocks with lockouts and it does have rear suspension these things are just swapped over by these different manufacturers anyway different brands and makes they just order their own little selection of parts to put on to make themselves look different it comes with a rear rack comes with metal uh mud guards here this isn't a 750 watt motor no i didn't pay any winner as much for this but i got it with a 1000 watt 1000 watts and 7 speed shimano gears disc brakes so you can get these things in australia but you don't get the brand names from america because they're either too expensive or they won't be delivered here in australia we go on the internet and we buy from china there you go this cost me 1600 australian dollars that's australian dollars my u.s friends because some of your bikes do sell for 1600 u.s so there you go i'm paying less i'm getting a bit more that's how it works here in australia so run you through the features take it for a spin things like that stick around [Music] yeah i don't know if you can see here but this is australia mate you have kangaroos this is just uh around the corner from where i live kangaroos ducks just lazing around on a sunday [Applause] [Applause] okay time for the uh hill test this is the hill that leads up to my street so i'm testing it because i ride it it's not some theoretical thing the bike has to get up here it gets steeper and steeper and then at the top it's very steep there is one steeper hill in man evelyn but i don't ride it so i'm not going there we'll see uh how we go getting up this hill good throttle a bit of pedaling drop it down again okay that'll do it so there you go did make it yeah the 250 watt bike i had before didn't make that this 1000 watt that made it and no kidding that's a steep hill so uh yeah needed the extra grunt there okay past the hill test being led up by the headlight on the bike because it's night time i'm checking out the lights so rear light running off the battery with brakes so integrated brakes the headlight itself you have a pretty good uh lighting situation here with the headlight so there you go not bad as far as lights go um a little bit better than i expected actually so yeah top marks [Applause] okay so a bit of a ride up to a nice reserve here i'll sort of walk around the red star let you see what it's like okay starting from the front got the mechanical disc brakes here i'll put up the measurements on the screen 20 inch fat tyres ciao yang four inch got a metal mud guard got adjustable shockers on the front with a lockout and on this side uh strength of the absorber there got the headlight integrated into a light switch on a handlebar here instead of having to push this for two seconds or something you can just turn the light on and off got a horn as well we've got this rather short neck here and i wish it was longer because when you're sitting you're leaning forwards and the cafe racer style it's not that comfortable so i've got to adjust find a way of adjusting that i might have to get a taller one or change this neck here so it comes up anyway got the m5 screen here shows you everything you need it's in kilometers per hour at the moment because we are in australia on off switch there seven speed shimanos here mechanical brakes with a uh electronic cutout got your half throttle here moving down batteries inside here it's a 48 volt 14 amp you can charge it in the frame or pull it out and charge it the pedals they're not folding they're pretty cheap uh pretty basic ones the frame itself is very similar to a lot of folding bikes out there a lot of the big names that you can buy pretty much identical got a shocker on the back for your back suspension seat here with a couple of springs in it it's pretty basic not super comfortable but you know it's got a bit of padding comes with a rack as standard not extra these two cables here one is for the mechanical brake this one here goes up to the integrated tail and stop light when you turn the headlight on taillight comes on when you pull the brake levers the brake light comes on all runs off the battery in here we've got a 1000 watt 48 volt motor there's your seven speed shimanos the adjuster there it's torn a so sort of low range shimano moving up here you've got to chain guard both sides so it won't come off there's your uh opening fold and unfold it's got a battery lock here key underneath now you do have to run this thing with the key in it that key unlocks and locks the battery in pretty simple once it's on there you can't pull it out yeah almost collocated black paint i think you can only get it in one color same sort of frame as many of the other foldable bikes they just put their own name on it i put my rack on the back central timber it comes with a phone holder standard okay that came with the bike the other extra that i wasn't expecting that comes it's got a quick release for the front wheel all in all for 1600 australian dollars you're getting a lot of bike so uh quite happy with that oh yeah i must mention a lot of people are pretty wary of just buying something a major item from china and hoping that it gets here and hoping that everything's all right because if something goes wrong they're pretty much stuck well i can tell you that's what i thought because when i was unwrapping this bike i accidentally and i didn't know this nicked a wire so when i got the bike all together nothing would power on it was dead and uh i was quite disappointed i couldn't figure out what was doing it so i thought oh heck you know people on board offering china have yeah what hope if i got so i contacted them on their message board and i thought i might take a day or two if i get a reply within minutes they've replied and set up a video call with me to work through the problem how good is that that's that just uh surprised me no end so i'll put a link below to yeah where you can get this thing if you want but customer service very very good no climbs about getting anything from them or recommending them so good on you pretty cheap but extremely well built lots of good parts on there and uh yeah should last me a while yeah whatever you do get out there have some fun bye
