so the first construction manager interview question i recommend you prepare for is tell me about yourself so this is going to be the first question the first interview question that you must answer so i recommend talking about the skills qualities and experience you have that will add value to their organization if they hire you i also recommend that you practice your answer to this question because this will help to get your interview off to a confident start remember this is the first question you will have to answer you will most likely be the most nervous right at the very start but if you give a confident response it really sets you up for the rest of your interview so to help you let me give you a brilliant example answer tell me about yourself here we go thank you for giving me the opportunity to be interviewed for this construction manager position with your company today before applying for the role i studied the job description carefully to ensure i had the skills qualities and experience to add value to your organization i would describe myself as a technically astute confident knowledgeable and industrious construction manager who has excellent communication skills and takes ownership of difficult challenges i have worked on various construction projects and i always collaborate seamlessly with stakeholders partners and contractors to achieve the main objectives set out by my employer i have a diverse style of leadership that means i can lead teams of people in various scenarios i am safety focused and i am particularly skilled in logistical operations defining and sticking to budgets dealing with conflict during construction projects and ensuring team members under my control work tirelessly to meet the organization's strategic objectives now if you hire me as your construction manager it will be my focus to deliver exceptional value for money in the role and ensure consistently strong results during projects are achieved that is a brilliant answer to that first construction manager interview question tell me about yourself now you can either pause the video if you want to and take a note of the questions and answers as we work through them together or if you want to wait i will soon tell you where you can instantly download my full set of 22 construction manager interview questions and top scoring example answers including the ones we are working through together today but here's the next question for you why do you want to be a construction manager now when preparing for this next interview question my advice is to write down a list of the things you find appealing about the role of a construction manager now a good thing to mention is that you find the high levels of responsibility that come with the position attractive and that you enjoy managing difficult construction projects and working with different stakeholders and contractors so here's another great example answer to help you why do you want to be a construction manager here we go i want to be a construction manager for several reasons i enjoy the level of responsibility that comes with the position and being someone who is a fast and diligent worker i enjoy the multitasking element of the role as a construction manager you are a leader project manager negotiator and influencer and i love the diverse skills and qualities you must utilize to achieve your objectives i work very well under pressure especially when i have tight deadlines to meet and it is the type of work that is highly rewarding when you successfully complete a difficult construction project that has had challenging logistical problems finally i enjoy the job security that comes with the position and i find the potential opportunity for development and advancement within the same organization appealing so that's another really good answer that's going to help you pass your interview now don't go anywhere because i still have more questions and answers to work through with you but when you're ready click that link in the top right hand corner of the video and you can head through to my website pastmyinterview.com and you can instantly download my full set of 22 construction manager interview questions and top scoring answers including the ones we are working through together today but here's the next question for you what are the most important skills and qualities needed to be a construction manager now this interview question is assessing your knowledge of the job description now although it may appear to be a relatively simple interview question to answer there's a set of specific skills and qualities needed in the role to maintain competence now i've done all the hard work for you and here's my example answer what are the most important skills and qualities needed to be a construction manager here we go the most important skills and qualities needed in this role include in-depth knowledge and understanding of building and construction the ability to project manage outstanding leadership capabilities and formidable time management skills because deadlines cannot be missed and you must utilize excellent influencing negotiation and interpersonal skills to ensure everyone involved in your construction project is on board with your vision now other essential skills and qualities needed to maintain competence as a construction manager include good working knowledge of health and safety procedures brilliant communication skills the ability to write concise reports skills budgeting management capabilities and the desire to take ownership of your ongoing professional development that is another brilliant positive and top scoring answer that's going to help you be the standout candidate here is the next question how would you deal with ambiguity during a construction project so these questions are starting to get difficult now so this is a tough interview question to answer and it often catches people out now the best way to answer it is to use a methodical approach to dealing with ambiguity that ensures a successful outcome is always achieved here's another great example answer to assist you how would you deal with ambiguity during a construction project here's my example answer whenever i encounter ambiguity during a project i focus on several things first i determine the exact cause of the ambiguity is it the absence of key information indecision misinterpretation of the project's requirements or a conflict between team members now once i have determined the exact reason for the ambiguity i can then focus on a solution i then revisit the initial project brief and ask questions to gain clarity of understanding on the area the ambiguity is centered on so for example in a previous role i took over a construction project part way through completion and it quickly became apparent that several team members were unclear who had responsibility for an area of the project now the previous manager had assumed the team members would sort this out themselves but that never happened so the conflict was having a detrimental effect on the progress of the project now to remove the ambiguity i quickly assessed each team members strengths and areas of expertise before delegating responsibility to the team member i felt was most suited to the task now that's a confident answer that definitely puts you across as a competent construction manager because you can easily deal with ambiguity by following a methodical approach that guarantees a successful outcome here's the next question what would you do if you didn't agree with a senior manager's decision now this is another difficult construction manager interview question to answer it is assessing your influencing and communication skills so here's my example answer to assist you what would you do if you didn't agree with a senior manager's decision here we go i would challenge the senior manager in a professional and constructive manner because i believe it is important to speak up if you don't speak up and give your opinion the construction project you are working on could suffer which would then be detrimental to the organization now whenever challenging a senior manager i would explain my thought process before giving a potential alternative way of working that i felt would be more beneficial to the project the senior manager would then have the additional information needed to make a decision that was in the best interests of the company that is a simple but concise answer that again shows you to be a competent construction manager it's a great response now this is another really difficult one how would you budget for a construction project so it's another construction manager interview question that i strongly recommend you prepare for you must give an in-depth answer that covers all possibilities when preparing a budget for a construction project that you are responsible for so here's another brilliant template example answer to assist you how would you budget for a construction project here we go i have plenty of experience creating and managing construction project budgets and i always follow several key steps i use historical data and experience from similar projects to determine any lessons learned for example in a previous role i was able to use the same template from a previous successful project to save time i will also in the early stages of budgeting for a construction project tap into experts and other construction managers that are in my network just a simple phone call to a colleague in a different organization can save me hours worth of research and time i would then assess the various costs both fixed and transient for the project now this is the part of the project budgeting that takes the most time and accuracy is vital if the baseline budget is going to be as accurate as possible now costs include labor consultation fees travel accommodation raw materials suppliers contractors and license fees for software tools that might be used during the project other costs include telephone office space and equipment administrative fees outsources and insurance now once i have determined the costs i will double check the figures to confirm their accuracy and then determine the baseline budget now the baseline budget is likely to change as the project progresses and it will need to be revisited regularly throughout the construction project it would also be my intention to use software tools that allow the project budget to be updated in real time now by following these simple steps it allows me to build solid foundations for which the construction project can be managed and delivered that's another brilliant answer that will help you be the standout candidate at your construction manager job interview here's the next question that i recommend you prepare for what can you bring to the company now this question comes up all the time during construction manager job interviews it is important before you attend your interview that you write down a list of how you can add value to their organization in the position here's another brilliant example answer what can you bring to the company here we go i can bring a fast yet methodical way of working a consistent management and leadership style that ensures all team members provide value for money and a proven track record that demonstrates my ability to deliver on the toughest of construction projects i can also bring a passion for construction a level of technical knowledge i believe is unmatched and the desire to continually learn and develop which means you will always have someone whose skills and qualities are relevant to the construction industry brilliant answer you can see all of these responses are going to help you shine at your construction manager interview so the next thing to do is make sure you
