my next guest has sounded the alarm on Boeing safety before and serves as the executive director of the nonprofit foundation for Aviation safety former Boeing senior manager Ed Pearson joins us now Ed great to have you on the show the families of the 346 people killed in those two crashes are not happy they think Boeing got off easy what do you think well thank you for having me Elizabeth um I think the families are are spoton they are absolutely correct um the steps at the Department of Justice are taken are are really laughable when you talk about millions of dollars you know this is like the cost of a plane or two right I mean this is a company that made very conscious decisions individuals that made very conscious decisions that resulted in the deaths of all these people and then we almost lost a whole other plane with the Alaska Airlines accident so this is a really terrible decision for Aviation safety it's it's obviously terrible for um Justice for people that are Seeking Justice like these victim families who have every right to deserve this justice but this is really bad for Aviation safety yeah they the families wanted a trial and for the Boeing Executives to pay I to go on the stand and explain uh this whole case is about two of the Boeing test pilots who were Mees messaging each other while they were testing the 737 Max planes before they went out to all the airlines they found a problem with the software they were like whoa this is a big problem here and Boeing kept the those messages hidden from FAA Regulators after they were investigating those crashes right actually I got to tell you there was a lot more than two people that were um acting criminally um we have found a boatload of evidence indicating that there was uh gross negligence uh obstruction of justice the company right to this day is continuing to conceal information about the safety of these airplanes we we're getting regular reports uh safety reports showing that the airplanes are having problems the company says that that meets exceeds all design standards which is not true they're requesting exemptions for plane that was developed you know supposedly 10 years ago or more um we've seen uh other evidence of concealment so there's a lot more here that needs to come out and the two pilots I'm not saying that what they did was was right in any sense they definitely deserve to be held accountable but they had zero impact zero influence on manufacturing I personally was in the factory I saw what was going on saw individuals making very poor decisions these are leaders in different levels making conscious decisions and that's what we need the Department of Justice to to look at um and it's really it's actually shameful if you think about it because I mean this is supposed to be the model right Department of Justice is a model around the world and right now people are just wondering what's going on in the US yeah today the FAA says it's requiring inspections of all 2600 Boeing 737 passenger planing their ox oxygen masks to see if they work properly to ensure they will work and Supply oxygen if God forbid they're needed I Ed I I got to be honest this this really is a a a crisis in confidence and public confidence in Boeing's planes is it not it is it's an absolute crisis and you know I'm glad you brought up the FAA because all the Boeing failures are reflective by poor oversight the FAA has done a horrible job they're still doing a horrible job the steps that they're taking that they think are so aggressive like capping production at 38 when the company can't even produce 32 um when they say they they're doing audits when they give weeks notice for people to know the audited team is coming in I mean the FAA honestly is is failing miserably and and because they're failing Boeing is failing right it's a it's a connection there and so you know the FAA needs to do a much much better job in fact we talk about them as being nothing more than a paper tiger right now yeah when I hear that they're appointing a safety monitor for three years it's like what you know a safety monitor to make sure they're that the planes are safe you know it really shows a complete lack also the complexity of of the company it's 170,000 people you know obviously the vast majority of those employees are trying to do their job properly it's a handful of individuals who are making these very conscious decisions and that are placing the public at risk they're the ones that are pressuring employees and subordinate managers and this is not acceptable we can't allow this to happen and so you know a monitor sounds good but you would need a team of monitors with expertise in manufacturing quality engineering flight operations uh so you
