The account manager secured a meeting with the vice governor and three of us flew to Naryan Mar which is well north of the Arctic Circle. To get there you fly two hours to Arkhangelsk and then another two hours east and north. We landed there, prepared for our meeting went to the government office - to be told that the meeting was cancelled - no explanation. So out to the airport and found that the airport was fogged in - no plane could land, no plane could leave - so we went back to the hotel. Next day to the airport same thing - Airport fogged in. In fact it was fogged in until 5:00 pm in the evening and then bright sunshine all night - Midnight Sun. But the planes wouldn't come after five o'clock. Back to the hotel. Next day same thing the airport fogged in, back to the hotel and that evening we asked at the hotel is there ANYTHING to do in Naryan Mar? We couldn't find a cinema or anything we were being driven to distraction. And they told us, yes! There's a in the nearby town. I didn't know at the time that gambling and s were illegal but we jumped in a car and drove about thirty minutes late in the evening - ten, eleven o'clock at night - bright sunshine down to the went inside all dark and seedy and started playing roulette as we started chatting with the various characters around the table it became clear that one of them was vice governor of the region!
