exclusively on the RVA small business Network I'm Joan Bolling your host for today's show aging it's a part of life and it happens to all of us but sometimes when the aging process impacts your appearance it can affect your career and possible business growth in the community so how do you know if an aesthetic procedure is right for you and when do you need it and who should you talk to about it here to explain the benefits of a more youthful appearance in the professional world and make you feel more comfortable taking that next step is Dr Robert Schmidt Dr Schmidt is a double board certified surgeon and founder of the West End facial Plastic Surgery Center in Richmond Dr Schmidt welcome to the RVA small business show we're glad to have you here I'm so thrilled to be here thank you now aging it is a privilege to grow old indeed it's better than the alternative and we all want to have the best version ours of ourselves as we walk through time but let's face it as we're walking through time we're walking through our career and that means our brand is on Full display wherever we go we don't want our looks to get in the way can you share a story or an example of how a cosmetic either surgical or non-surgical procedure has really helped enhance a career absolutely um for my first six years of practice I was working in a small town in Central Texas and I had a gentleman come to me to discuss a facelift he was taller probably six foot three six foot four and what he did professionally was he auctioned off antique cars so here you have this very tall gentleman who was standing on a stage in front of a large number of of high-end people with money and auctioning off these cars well he was constantly being seen from this angle and being you know 50 something he was beginning to get fullness in here and some jowling which was only accentuated by the angles that he was being seen from uh also he was having a lot of pictures taken all the time and again from from his business perspective as an Auctioneer of high-end cars he needed his appearance to match what he was bringing to the table in terms of his expertise and and the um image that he was trying to portray any energy that he was giving to the audience as an Auctioneer yes most of us feel 10 15 years younger that we actually are but again if the visual doesn't match the energy most people will lean in on the visual yes particularly in sales or in executive positions your appearance really does matter people will judge you without knowing that they're judging you they'll think oh this person doesn't have the energy to keep up with what we need oh this person isn't gonna stay with me after the sale because they're going to be tired you know or they're uh Antiquated because they don't know what's current or contemporary or modern and all that is just judged on what you face forward That's Right audience for sure now I think it's fantastic that we live in a day at a time where there's so many Surgical and non-surgical options out there so how do you choose and um I'm sure not sure about this question but I'm gonna throw it out there anyway what age do you start to inquire about getting started with keeping fresh sure well in terms of knowing what to ask for I think that that is that is an important distinction between my business and and some of my competitors okay um I have a saying if if all you have is a hammer everything looks like a nail okay but you know maybe you don't need a nail for whatever you're trying to do okay so working with a practice that specializes in Surgical and non-surgical Specialties and has the ability to keep to do professional grade skin care laser services really offering a a the full complement of services you're going to be able to match what the person needs the best okay so typically what what people will come in and they'll they'll ask me about something and you know I've been doing doing this a little while so I kind of pick up what they're actually asking about and so we'll we'll typically say okay well those are that's an interesting idea let's take some pictures okay because the camera doesn't lie the camera doesn't have a preconceived notion of anything right so we take some pictures and then we sit down and say okay what what are your top goals you know and it may be that they're very fixated on something that from the camera's perspective and for my objective perspective is really not that big a deal and we can usually find other things that that would be more impactful because you know in my practice I could spend all of all your money but we want to make sure that we do it in an impactful way so that not only the does the patient feel like they've spent their dollar wisely and had a good effect but then that's how we develop a relationship of trust and and fundamentally my business is a business of relationships and Trust I like what you said about a relationship of trust right and I go back to when I'm sitting around with my friends you know maybe it's a Friday night we're talking about what's up what have you done and then if they toss something out I might say maybe I'll inquire about that sure so back to your Hammer I may not need that tool to help me get done what I need to get done exactly so working with somebody who who has a skill set that involves non-surgical and surgical things we can get you to where you want to be now you asked in terms of of when should one right what decade should we start entering into that conversation right well it really depends on what your goals are okay um I I see an awful lot of patients 30s to 40s who are really looking to maintain their appearance rather than take what they have and turn something back 20 years okay so by by starting to maintain early with skin treatments and things like botox um the analogy is if you take a sheet and you fold it up and you put it on a shelf and you leave it there for 20 years when you pull it off the shelf you're going to need an iron to get the wrinkles out of it very good analogy but if you store it flat in the first place you aren't going to need the more advanced things since you brought up Botox many of us are equated with what Botox is all about you know it's quick and quick out you can see the results nobody knows that you've had that done however there are other options so before you talk about maybe use some of the other options let's just go on a Level Playing Field talk about what Botox is because some of our audience actually you know they know what it is but what what does it do and for whom this is a this is a wonderful topic so Botox and medicines like botox on a fundamental level interfere with how nerves talk to muscles okay that's all that it does we can take advantage of that to help people maintain their appearance typically I will use Botox and things like botox to maintain the upper part of the face we we yes we can smooth out wrinkles we can help keep them from getting worse but the thing that I do most often is to help people achieve a more rested appearance and so we'll typically try to get a little bit of a brow lift with with doing Botox and if you know the anatomy you can achieve that it's just a matter of balancing out muscles that pull your your eyebrows up versus ones that pull it down okay in my practice we never want to freeze you we want to have people be able to maintain their expressions okay but but we want to feel make people think that you went on vacation you know get the good night's rest exactly all that in in my practice we are not trying to make you into someone who you're not we want to help you maintain your appearance or freshen it right so that you feel your best nothing makes you feel like a million bucks when you walk into the office on a Monday morning then someone's saying hey you look great exactly and then you are on the elevator to having a good day that's right just fantastic yes so moving through time a faces age naturally you might calm Crow's food we like to calm smile lines in our family you might have the bags under your eyes you've got the wrinkles but what about something unexpected like um maybe an accident sure an illness or maybe a birth defect do you work with those kind of votes yes I absolutely do um in in my practice we we it is about 90 cosmetic but about 10 of it is reconstructive uh the vast majority of that is trauma uh I do take face tromacol along with a number of colleagues uh and and work with a number of the big hospitals in the area and that can look like anything from I was in a car wreck and I have a this cut on my face or I fell and I broke my cheekbone um so yes we specialize in all of that and it also could be maybe a skin cancer that's removed and needs a little bit more in-depth for lack of better word fixing than than what maybe another specialty could do sure um uh because we are ultimately focused on the aesthetic part of things we might choose to handle a skin cancer a little bit differently just because we want to look like nothing was ever there which is such a gift to the patient and allows them to go along their way without anyone knowing or that they're being a Telltale trace of what actually occurs exactly fantastic right there so I think about my experience and my friends experience in getting up the nerve I'm going to use getting up the nerve to go into talking a appointment a consult with you what questions should the patient have before they come in we can research everything and come in with a full book yes but you mentioned briefly what you want to know but what should they come prepared to bring into that consult they should definitely be prepared to talk about what their goals are they should be prepared to um talk about what they're willing to sign up for both in terms of let's be frank cost but also there's there's always trade-offs in terms of recovery time if you are so busy that you can handle no downtime at all great I need to know that because then I can come up with a treatment plan that is minimally invasive in all respects okay if however you could give me a week where you could you know go on vacation then we can talk about other things okay so it's it's realistic you need to have a realistic sense of what your goal is but also what you're willing to to put into it both in terms of an investment in time and like time and money as well for that and the surgical options again uh might be a secondary step to build that trust to start the relationship perhaps younger even though you gave the example of the auctioneer who was like listen I'm I'm ready to roll with this I need to get this done I need to feel this way and look this way right but to enter into that relationship knowing what options are available based on what my goals are and what the practice can do to assist yes enter that medical umbrella which is great and we'll we'll have that that kind of comprehensive assessments okay well what can we do today we can do these things today what could we look at doing in a few months what could we look at doing in a few years okay because we we we're it's all about establishing that relationship and working together through time to to maintain you where you want to be nothing beats having that trusted advisor in a medical practice that you can lean into and call for questions or go and see what needs to be done I think that's absolutely fantastic so let's go let's back up the bus a little bit it's beautiful here in the summertime we have the full sun people are heading out on vacation what can we do preventatively to help slow that aging bust down this is a very important question okay um I strongly feel that during the during the summer months and really during the winter months uh everybody needs to be wearing sunscreen and there's a couple reasons for this um on a molecular level our skin is made of collagen okay UV rays come from the Sun can break down your collagen uh you know we've seen people who spent you know decades as sun worshipers and they get that kind of leathery appearance to their skin that's really hard to undo so um wearing sunscreen every day even when it's cloudy SPF 30 or better ideally a physical block like one that has titanium dioxide or zinc oxide kind of a better way to go than the ones that have chemicals in them I also strongly strongly emphasize that people should not smoke um smoking you know everyone knows smoking is bad for you but specifically why okay tell you so um it has a cigarette smoke has a lot of chemicals in it that generate free radicals what is that free radicals cause damage on a molecular level to your cells okay that's why they cause cancer okay furthermore um it affects the blood supply to your skin uh peop the you know the sun worshipers who were smokers again they get that kind of leather appearance it's it's because they've they've damaged their skin on a molecular level and they're not getting enough blood in there to actually fix it thank you for that explanation on that so that's a very good preventative yes sun no sun or protection from sun because it's everywhere we're going outside it's everywhere and it's wonderful to enjoy mother nature and then again soaking is bad for you and thanks for that explanation on that now some in our audience have been thinking about coming in for a consultation but you know they're a little apprehensive it's their face yes it's out in the open we're not hiding that under an article of clothing and some of the questions that come to mind will be will this be painful what will the recovery be about what if it doesn't turn out as I had hoped what do you say in that consultation to allay some fears sure well I like to talk about how my practice has three fundamental rules that guide everything that we do rule number one is that everything I do has got to look natural in the end okay we the last thing I want is for people to come out of my practice looking altered in some way you know we want you to look like you just sort of a refreshed version of yourself rule number two is that everything I do in my practice has to be backed up by science okay you're not going to get whatever the fad of the week is because people are talking about it on Tick Tock it's like we don't do that you know um and thirdly everything we do has got to be safe there are some things that people ask me about from time to time that are fundamentally unsafe um and we talk about why they are not safe and so we don't do them but then we come up with with alternative ways of of achieving the same results just with an added margin of safety so that's very helpful again to get those fears out into the open and to continue that conversation for whatever you're in for for that appointment exactly Dr Smith thank you so much for the conversation today and walking us through what this is all about gracefully and confidently in the aging process and what we can do to refresh ourselves really appreciate the conversation today thanks so much if you've been thinking about how
