hello everyone my name is maria lopez neri my pronouns are she her hers and i'm currently enrolled at cal poly slo and my major is animal science so within the animal science major there are two different tracks there is the pre-vet track and there's the general animal science track so with the pre-by track it lists a set of classes and or requirements that are needed in order for you to apply and get accepted into vet school and within the general animal science track it just helps expand your knowledge and the animal science field and they also list different concentrations as well some of the concentrations being equine science dairy science meat science and even animal comparative biology which is my concentration but the animal science major really corresponds with cal poly's learn by doing motto and it really shows in the classes the labs the enterprises even research projects and internships that are available to you as well some of the things that i have done is an enterprise a research project and um almost an internship so an example for the enterprise was the lambing enterprise i was able to anticipate in it and this past winter quarter and i was able to go out into the field and help with newly born labs but that's not the only enterprise that's offered there's also um a reptile husbandry enterprise um a swine enterprise and equine enterprise there's a really wide range so it really helps um expand your knowledge and kind of gives you a touch or feel of what you want to do in the future and then along um with that as well i was able to participate in a research project in which it consisted of working with other classmates and a professor um it was a sea otter foraging project so i was able to go out tomorrow bay at least once every weekend and look at data of sea otters and also take down data of what they were consuming um and what they would bring up back out of the water just to get an insight of how their environment was like underwater and then lastly i was almost able to do an internship the internship was supposed to be this summer budget to the pandemic it was cancelled but it wasn't it's supposed to be an internship with the charles paddock zoo and within their zoo education but there are countless other classmates that have participated in that have participated in the charles paddock zoo internship um but you can do an internship with the zoo education but you can also do an internship with zookeepers as well which countless classmates have done and they say that it's really beneficial and it's really knowledgeable but lastly the student to faculty ratio the largest class i believe you'll have is your first class which is acid112 i believe that has around 200 students if not a little bit more but after that class the student to faculty ratio really dies down i believe the largest class i've had so far is around 30 to 40 students so you really do get that one-on-one help and office hours are also available if you do need more help um with your professor and it's more specific to your needs and what you don't understand um but the animal science major is really beneficial i believe it really has that hands-on and you really get it you really get into that hands-on experience um your first year and it's honestly amazing and i highly recommend looking into enterprises and internships even research projects if you're able to but um that's all i have for the animal science major thank you for watching and there will be resources listed down below and best of luck on your new journey
