hey y'all this is Tamika the face behind HR and we have not done a story time in a while and this one has just been on my mind so heavily so I want to tell you guys why I don't think getting a certification or a HR degree is gonna lift your career if you want to know what can start your career there are tons of videos that I already did that tells you the top three ways to start your career I went live like I've just done it over and over again because I really wanted to let you know what happened to me if you want to know what happened to me keep watching [Music] so I first started my career literally by networking if you watch any of my videos If you on my email list I think you've seen me talk about that a ton it was literally me telling my cousin just kind of venting I mean he was my cousin I'm like listen man I really want to start my career I got laid off in Government Contracting and I just feel like it's time for me to start HR like he talked to his classmate who was the HR Director and She interviewed me and three other people She interviewed more than that but she did did the job offer to three other people so anybody working HR knows you normally pick your top three candidates in case someone says no or something goes wrong so that's what she did I wasn't in that top three she extended job offers to two of them and they both declined she offered it to the third person at first that person accepted and then a week before they're supposed to start they called back and rejected the offer so she called me and offered the position of me I was thrilled I had absolutely no HR experience I had already started my HR degree I was only a year from finishing my HR degree but that just wasn't enough so luckily my network pulled through for me and I started my HR career so that shows you how even starting that degree and trying to get a job isn't going to work right so I went through and I took the exam thinking okay let me get certified I tried for the hrci first they automatically told me no I tried for sham next I took that exam and I failed it oh what a Blow by that time when I took the Sherman exam I was already in my career oh I was already at my career for about three or four years so I said okay I'm gonna rush and take it next opening and then I changed my mind right before it because my company that I worked for they had paid for it for me the first time and so this next time I was like well I mean I don't feel right asking for the money because I already messed up their money the first time so I went and got the Sherm scholarship and I was like okay I can use that to pay for it well I thought to myself no it's only right that I give this money back to my company because I didn't even become certified so I gave them the money and now I'm left not knowing how I'm gonna sit for the exam again ah it was tough times I decided to take a two year break took a two-year break I became certified when I sat for the exam the second time so by this time I already have a double master's degree I already had the highest level charm certification and by the time I actually already have like five or six years of HR experience so I'm thrilled no reason why I can't be the director for this organization I work for for four years and actually you know what I was like eight or nine years into my degree because I had worked for that company not nine I was I had started there in 20 16 I started my career in 2012 and then I sat for the exam in 2017. so I've been with that company three years by this time and then I became certified so my fourth year that the CEO had decided to let the HR Director go I worked in her position for nine months doing the HR director position we had already created a recruiting strategy so I was the recruiter I walked in there as the journalist I had two people that reported to me so I was responsible for them and I just thought like what else can I do to be ready for this HR director position so I'm like waiting is nine nine nine months later when I said to my my CEO I was like I can't keep doing it all like I'm exhausted we need help so he finally decided okay cool let's start the interview process are you interested well initially I was thinking to myself like why should I even need to apply see it says know what she's been doing a long time ago she just didn't have the confidence but actually another director talked me into applying and I finally said to him like you know what change of plans I already made up my mind I definitely want to try interviewed with him that went well and then I go and interview with all of these directors that I've been working with for the last three years actually was three years yeah I was there a total of four but my last year end there so I went out um you know did the whole interview got all dressed up and dolled up the question has really annoyed me like none of these people knew HR and I knew that that's why I was doing a position for nine months so I was already annoyed because I wasn't asked any HR questions the only person I asked questions that I felt were really solid and valuable were one person asked me like how would I feel about you know being acclimated with the team as the Director now that they've always known me as a journalist the other question that I thought was very very helpful and I could see the reason for that was the the CFO or the finance director she said to me you know how comfortable am I with managing like the finance budget and things like that those are the only questions mind you I got interviewed by like six to directors be honest with you another director asked me uh what has motivated me and so I said my mother there's like two of them left including the person that told me to go for this position I was frustrated we had been quote unquote friends and so she looked at my face and saw that I had no laugh in my face at all and she said well you know I didn't mean to laugh you know the thing that that really kind of threw me off is I really thought you were going to say Michelle Obama well in my mind I'm like you're the one who talked me into this my reply to her was I really admire Michelle Obama I really think she's an amazing person but I've seen my mother struggle anyhow long story short I didn't get that job and you know what sucked more the fact that they weren't interviewed a few other people quite a few of them were qualified they selected someone that had absolutely no HR degree no HR certification nothing nothing now not only did that happen to me I've seen that happen so much in my career I've seen that happen often I felt like it was just necessary to do the story time so you guys can know like position yourself outside of those criterias I was happy that I went and passed the exam a second time I paid a thousand dollars just to take the exam just to get the study material and I went to ask for a refund and they only gave me back the exam fee which was like just over 300 it was cool because you know what happened I now make a comfortable salary that I'm happy with and they're giving me a comfortable so I'll be back then I probably wouldn't even ask for the money you have to just do like I learned late because I learned to sleep you know about me could be confident what you know tap into your network get your resume where it should be and you'll be fine I personally if I knew what I knew now I would not even have gotten my degree that early but it was my degree that made me realize I wanted to do HR so it really kind of worked out right because I thought I want to be a nurse thought I wanted to be a doctor that type of thing you know now I have tons of students on debt and I wish I had just waited worked at an organization let them pay for it so I encourage you to just know that that was my story that's how things went for me wasn't nice at all so let's not let like a degree or letters behind your name or something else validate who you are get comfortable in knowing that you know some information even if you have no HR degree like that's where your network really helps you like getting into groups and hearing the language that people are saying I start getting comfortable with it get that resume right and interview [Music] so that was a nice quick short story time but that one's been on my heart for a while I've had it on my list for a long time that I was like I really need to tell them about this I really need to tell him about this hope you guys found it valuable for those of you who are watching for the first time I hope that that was a good enough story that you're like you know what I'ma stick around a little bit and that you subscribe for those of you who are returning oh my God I love y'all and I've never met y'all that's like crazy crazy stuff like y'all are amazing y'all are such great supporters like I have family and friends who never watched a video and some of you guys like y'all just watch everyone I appreciate you can't wait to see you in the next video [Music]
