you know I think we have a small organizational dilemma Susan asks our Suzanne rather how can you transfer these principles to a small organization where only one or two people you know are running an HR department in addition to their other line responsibilities to the business I hope you don't mind but I'm gonna I'm gonna lump it in with Ashley's question which is very similar I currently accomplish my courses to achieve my certificate in HR management essentials congratulations I was wondering if you had any advice on what I can do to stand out so I can hopefully get promoted to HR but she performs HR duties within our company does not get paid for it so there's clearly a small organization dilemma right the initiation or the initiative the drive the addition is there how do you yeah where do you take the first step yeah so so I think within small businesses because I've also worked with quite a few though it's hard because there's not the resource to make that a full-time job if you only have 20 employees or 30 employees you just don't have the cash flow to have a full-time HR person I would say just start taking on those roles where I can can you become the coach to other leaders can you help them think through the underlying people challenges and present ideas on how to do things differently I do think as those companies grow I've often seen you know I've worked with lots of entrepreneurs my dissertation I interviewed about 250 small business owners and managers and what they all said is there comes a point whether it's about a hundred employees 125 employees where that CEO founder is no longer personally involved in hiring everybody they don't actually know everybody in the building anymore that they start to men need a full-time HR person yes so there becomes a break point where if you demonstrate this stuff you've kind of stepped up and showed that you're this great coach you've helped them think through the HR channels I think those jobs open up as the company grows but I think a lot of these skills actually apply to any great leader in any company right that ability to be strategic yeah that ability to help think about how to drive a better organizational culture how to coach other people had a really thing about the talent do we have the right tail and how to drive those are characteristics of all great leaders from CHR O's to CEOs to maybe some CFO is to certainly heads of operations right so I think what the characteristics we pulled out are basically leadership characteristics yeah totally applicable and I think if you just you know stick out your neck and go for it you probably will make some waves yeah certainly
