okay it's that time you've been hired you have a team to look after it's time to call that first team meeting thank you for checking out my channel leadership with mike on this channel i help managers become leaders and i do that with no nonsense sense assuming that makes sense you have your first team meeting with your brand new team what do we do okay let's be honest first you're gonna crap your pants second you're gonna feel sick let's get that over with out of the way assume it's coming but we gotta move on this is your plan let's look at what the intent of this meeting should be it's not to come in and give a grand vision in the next nine months i'm gonna do this and i'm gonna change that oh my word that is going to basically kill your opportunity to do what i need you to do take this moment and build trust don't share your grand vision this is your opportunity to build trust how do you do that you're going to show that you're worthy of trust you're going to show that you are humble that you do not know it all and you're going to show that you are willing and hopeful to accept help from those you're looking after secondly come in with an icebreaker these are usually in my opinion they're cheesy as hell i hate them everybody hates them but we have to have a way to break the ice get to know each other that said take notes because when somebody has something to say when they say their favorite food or their favorite hobby just take notes this is something that you may be able to use in the future not as a manipulation but as a a chip a chiptakashin listen the more you know about people the more you can play this game of life because it's give and take so just gather as much information with the assumption that it will be used for the most positive of ideas here's another thing that i would do while we are breaking the ice i try to talk to my supervisor my colleagues in the leadership role and try to get a sense of who is who like i'm looking at when i worked at restaurants there was always a few people that they run the show so if i could get them on my team or make sure they understand i am on their team my transition was always much easier because there's always a leader of the pack so when the leader of the pack says yeah this guy's a good guy then everybody will have an easier time falling in line so to speak but if that person doesn't like you or you haven't shown the respect it's gonna be an uphill battle can it be one absolutely we're not a bunch of losers here but let's make life easier look for the people that you need to connect with in terms of the staff you're gonna be looking after and then look for ways to incorporate them into the icebreaker don't signal single them out but just keep them in mind when you do things don't ask them for permission but try to get their buy-in the next thing you're going to do at this team meeting the first one share one share your experience this isn't just to be bragging about your resume and how you did this that the other thing but it does help people understand where your where your ideas come from but on top of that share some personal things some mishaps share some hobbies i like to go fishing you will not find me in the summer if i'm not on a boat there's a slim chance you find me anywhere i you know if you're talking to me i love my kids my kids drive me but they drive me bananas these are things that you can share maybe you get a chuckle out of people but let them see you as human oddly enough because you are you're not a hero you're a human okay you also want to make sure that your new team understands you are in a phase of learning you're not here to just start changing everything you want to learn why do we do this how do we do that is there a reason that this happens let them understand that they can tell you these things and it will benefit them to share because heaven forbid you start changing something that was working why would you waste your time on that and in the spirit of learning ask questions during this meeting maybe a handful ask them what's working what's one thing you want me as your as the new team lead to leave it alone don't touch it like when i worked at the airport anybody came in do not touch my schedule i see i worked for five days and i was off for five days come on amazing anybody that thought they were coming in to touch that all the employees okay we wouldn't physically hurt them but no it's non-negotiable follow that up by what is something that really needs to change here that maybe we we haven't done nobody's wanted to back this idea what's something that's just not working and we need to fix get into asking what's the best thing about working here what's the worst thing about working here just to get a sense of what's really happening in the workplace that you're now jumping into maybe you've been promoted from from inside so you might already have some of these ideas but hear it make sure everybody take notes make sure everybody knows that you're actively listening you're taking notes because this is where you're going to get your actions for your future meetings your future endeavors within the company this is your action plan people are going to give it to you you don't have to come up with all these new rules and stuff just get a sense of what's working and what's not working don't say my door is always open feel free to come and see me because now you're putting the onus on your new team who knows you know minimal about you and you want them to come to you just do what instead make sure everybody knows one thanks for hearing me out thanks for having this chat i appreciate learning what i intend to do is have one-on-one talks or meetings with each and every one of you over the coming weeks and i'm hopeful that i can get an insight as to how we operate where we have issues or gaps and what i can do to help you succeed that is a much more personal approach with a timeline as opposed to my door is always open anybody says my door is always open i've never not once thought oh it seems like a nice guy i'll probably go talk with him no if i'm losing my mind i'm gonna come in but that my door is always open is uh it's it's usually instead make sure that you know they're gonna you're gonna schedule one-on-one you just wanna have coffee with somebody and figure out what is working what is not get a bunch of different perspectives and this is a great time for you to build up your rapport build up your trust within this group there's a lot of things you could talk about that you want to talk about i'm not sure that your first meeting is where it should happen again this is just getting to know you getting to know the staff having an idea keeping it light sharing who you are this isn't your 90-day plan as to how you're changing the world that everybody seems to be living in okay keep it light keep it informative take notes i'm gonna grab my coffee see you in the next video ciao
