hey up-and-comers coach steve here out with Buffy on a walk it looks like it's gonna rain here any minute let's see if I can get a quick mini pod in I touched recently on the sort of the three steps you go through and your first meet somebody so that you can sort of better understand how to interact with them and how that all starts with a great handshake you know firm properly aligned and held long enough to feel normal usually a count of four and so on but let's take that a little bit farther now now I'm assuming that you're meeting somebody because you want to build a relationship with them and have some sort of a transaction so let's look at the evolution of a relationship now I've sold millions of dollars of computer services over the years and people often ask me how I did that certainly as an introvert and the answer was simple I just simply built rapport with people and I would ask for business now over time that that process became a little more sophisticated and I tried to reflect that in the image I attached to this audio it looks like a funnel a typical funnel it has three phases in it as you come down the funnel the top one is a rapport the middle phase is trust and the lower Flay phase is influence so you put a prospect into the top of that funnel your first goal is to build rapport I would do that generally try to do that with a proper handshake or a hug or some proper conversation that would show some synergy between the parties excuse me I'm walking up a hill here in a little bit out of air the next phase moving down the funnel is trust and Trust is an interesting thing if you follow brené Brown alone psychologist on the topic of trust trust can be built on surprisingly small actions or seemingly insignificant actions for example if you know somebody's parents are ill and you were to ask about that or if their child is trying to get into a college and you follow up by asking you know how is that going that really shows it shows others that you care and can move you into the center of the funnel which is trust which is a key is a key step again this funnel is here to sort of help you determine where you are in the relationship process and the overall effort to build credibility so we started with rapport we moved down the funnel into trust and the last phase is influence influence comes when people will share information with you or you they will accept the information that you share with them and allow you to influence them and of course if you're selling something this is this is where you want to be because the bottom coming up a bottom of the funnel is whatever transaction you're hoping for or if it's just a great relationship with somebody so keep that funnel in mind again this will give some structure to your process of relationship building and I work great for me and hopefully it will for you as well oops look like I ran over three minutes here sorry talk to you soon bye bye
