so you work in sales and you want to become a product manager i'm here to help [Music] hi i'm dr bart and i'll be your product management teacher today we'll be looking into getting you the sales person to transition to product management let's kick things off with the fact that you should start by looking at a different video in the breaking product management series about how to get promoted to product manager there i talk about how to talk to hr and your manager and what to focus on on this transition but here we'll be looking at differences between the sales people and product managers and our advice on what to focus on to kick your new position as a great product manager let's start by looking at the spider chart of product manager skills versus a sales person's skills sales people are best equipped to make the transition in terms of business acumen communication and understanding clients no other entry point will be as well prepared in those aspects as the salespeople however on the other end of spectrum they might not have the right leadership skills they are the least likely to understand attack and maybe the data analysis is not that great however that really depends on what you're selling so there might be people graded numbers there might be someone who only looks at the sales figures so how to develop yourself to become a better product manager when the time comes what you need to start with is to understand the development process talk to the dev team understand what makes an idea a piece of software what are all the steps in between and understand the language you don't need to start the code you don't need to do anything with the program itself but you need to understand how are things made so you don't need to be able to bake the cake yourself you just need to know that there need to be ingredients bought they need to be connected inserted order and then they need to beg for certain amount of time in order to make the cake that's the good analogy here in terms of what you need to understand in terms of your skills of communication you'll probably need to be a bit more transparent and talk directly to your to your team to your stakeholders and don't make it a marketing ourselves pitch just tell people on how things are and use your excellent communication skills to convey the actual situation expectations and the status no need to shook or code it and product managers are in a position where they can easily communicate on how things are and then have support from all over the company to improve bad situation and congrats if everything is great now what you also need to realize that you are not here for the short term you need to focus on the long term goals the long term value gain and not things that will improve the sales in the next quarter well that might be different from company company but philosophically it's better to invest something that will give you a long better return in the long term rather than have a very big focus on just the next quarter obviously product managers work in a way that they have goals from quarter to quarter but in terms of like the high level decision making you need to focus on something that will ultimately bring more value not something that will give you a big spike of value short term what you need to however realize is that as a salesperson you will you are always laser focused on your goals sales goals please please please please translate that laser focus on the goals to being a product manager and making sure that if you have some goals to achieve you are completely dedicated on doing so that you will carry on your passion to sail as much as you can to achieving as much as you can from the plans that you have made for the quarter or for the year and finally just grow your leadership skills to make sure that everyone supports you and adults working with you and make sure that you are data driven you probably already are but i think that's the aspect that you really need to work on to be more familiar in getting the best of excel power bi or other tools your company is using or at least being able to ask for the right answers from the data with the help of your data analysis team obviously being a product manager is not as easy and there's much more to learn and find out to do that either stay on the channel like subscribe and come back for a future video and also i have a product management course on udemy that i'll link in the description that will definitely help you become a great product manager this is all for this week i will see you in the next video stay safe thank you [Music] you
