The balance between public perception and animal health is a constant challenge in Animal Sciences. People like to see animals outside. However, animals like chickens can get viruses from the outside environments. Therefore, it can actually be better to keep animals in places like these, where we can better control their environment and their health. This is the reason I study Animal Sciences at Wageningen University and research. The fact that this is an international programme, was a great opportunity for me to meet Dutch students as well as students from all over the world. I really like making friends from different countries, because I'm really curious about their traditions, culture and their perspective of Animal Management Systems. I coordinate the first year course introduction to Animal Sciences. As part of this course small groups of students have to try to solve a problem for an organization that keeps animals. For example, a camel farm that is dealing with liver fluke. I like how the theory, when you study Animal Sciences, is linked to current events happening in our worlds. Things like rising emissions or loss of biodiversity. Yesterday it was on the news, and today we discuss it in the lectures. The core of the programme is that we care for, and manage animals that we live so close with in our society. So these are animals that have a function for humans. So you can think of livestock in food production, it could be pets in companionship and sports, but also zoo animals to stimulate the biodiversity, and of course recreation. The human and animal relation is key in our programme. In that we have the responsibility to care for animals. That we house them the best we can, that we feed them the best we can, that we prevent them from illness, and of course that we stimulate them to express their natural behavior. I decided to study Animal Sciences, because I could really express my love for animals, and science at the same time. Especially concerning my favorite animals, pets. Obesity among cats and dogs is a big problem nowadays. Therefore, I would like to understand and formulate pet feed which is nutritious, sustainable, and can prevent related diseases. I'm mostly interested in what happens in the animal itself, on a genetic and metabolic level and how these interact. With this knowledge I want to develop machine learning methods to improve poultry health. I'm motivated to contribute to sustainable future and animal husbandry. My research aims to improve animal welfare in the dairy sector. Specifically, I study what happens when we keep the mother cow and her calf together after birth instead of separating them. This is my passion, I love to share it with students and I like to help them to find out what they are themselves passionate about.
