previous videos on my channel about staying at your desk keeping your head down and focusing on doing a good job at work and not focusing on how you can build visibility in the office in order to get promoted in any position or in any company you need to be visible you need people to know who you are what value you bring what contribution you offer to a team or to a company you cannot do these things if nobody knows who you are if you stay at your desk keep your head down it's likely nobody will know who you are nobody will know what contribution you add to the team or to the company so in order to become more visible you really need to move away from your desk and start connecting with people start talking with people as an emerging leader you need people to know what value you can add what you are an expert in and the only thing that is really going to help you in this area is by getting out there by networking by connecting with people and by getting to know people so don't stay at your desk get out there network build relationships and connect number two people don't ask your opinion if people don't ask for your opinion at work it means they don't care what you think they don't value your input they don't value your suggestions in leadership and management your opinion matters it matters a lot and when people want to know what you think what your opinion is it means that you can have more impact in business decisions you can have more impact in the future of your team or of your company so if people are not asking for your opinion then you need to start asking yourself why why are they not asking for my opinion why don't they care what i think sometimes your boss might not be open-minded enough to invite the opinions of other people so it might not just be for you they do this they might do it for a number of other people as well maybe they have an authoritative leadership style and therefore your boss doesn't ask what your opinion is but in other situations when people don't ask your opinion and this is more often the case than not it's because people don't know you have an opinion maybe you're somebody who's held back a lot during meetings maybe you've never shared your opinion before in meetings maybe people don't think you have an opinion or have anything valuable to share therefore they don't ask what your opinion is but if you aspire to be a manager or to be a leader in a company you need to have an opinion and you need to make other people know that you have an opinion so what you need to do is start sharing your opinions in meetings start sharing your opinions with other people at work and other people in the office in doing this over time people will learn that you do have an opinion and they will eventually learn that you have a valuable opinion to share as well and they'll be more likely to ask for your opinion in the future so start sharing your opinions number three you're not included in high level meetings so high level meetings are where important decisions are made high-level meetings are usually made up of senior level decision makers or senior level people in a company you as an aspiring leader aspiring manager need to be invited to these meetings you need to be part of these meetings you need to be included in that conversation you need to be part of this insider group so you appear to be somebody who is valuable who is important and who is having an impact or an input in these important decisions so how do you become a part of this insider group and get invited to high-level meetings well it's a process and it doesn't happen overnight but what you can do is start connecting start connecting with those people who are in those high level meetings start getting to know them start sharing your ideas and your opinions in meetings or with those people directly and what you really want to focus on here is showing that you can add value to those meetings you have something important something intelligent to say something to share with those other people and this over time will help you develop the reputation of somebody who does have a valuable opinion and valuable input and you're more likely to be invited to those meetings in the future in next week's video i delve into more ideas more concrete ideas on how you can be promoted into a management or leadership leaders you need the opportunity to prove yourself if you are constantly given low-level work and that's the only work that you do in the office you will never have the chance you will never have the opportunity to prove yourself to prove you are capable you're intelligent and you're worthy of higher level work and as a result you have less chance of getting promoted if you feel that you are not getting the high level work that you want in order to be noticed and then be promoted this is what you need to do first you need to make it known that you actually want to work on those high-level projects maybe people aren't aware that you are interested in that kind of work so make it known that you want to be included in these high-level projects you also need to build relationships with people who are involved in those high level projects this will help you connect with them so they think of you when they're choosing people in the future for those high level projects it will also show that you are capable of working on those high level projects so you're more likely to be considered in the future and again i know i've mentioned this a number of times throughout this video share your ideas and opinions in meetings this is a really easy way and free way for you to get other people to know that you have valuable opinions and valuable input to act number five nobody wants to work with you when you're a manager or a leader you're in charge of a team you need to motivate inspire and encourage team members to reach the goals that you have set and your success as a manager or a leader depends on how well you can do this how well you can motivate inspire connect and build relationships with people in your team so essentially your success as a manager or a leader depends on your people skills people skills in leadership and management are incredibly important i will be talking about this in a future video about social skills for your leadership success or social skills that you need in leadership so subscribe to my channel if you want to learn more about people skills when i release that video but basically if people don't want to work with you for whatever reason because you're a micro manager because you're difficult to work with or because they don't trust you then you will never get the opportunity to showcase your leadership or your management ability if in general interactions with others in the office you can't showcase your leadership or management ability it's unlikely you'll be chosen for a promotion if people cannot see that you are a good manager or a good leader it's unlikely they will ever choose you to be a manager or to be a leader so you need to start showcasing this and working out how you can prove it to other people that you will be a good manager and a good leader my suggestion to you is to work on your people skills this will definitely help you show that you have the ability to lead and to manage well and you'll be more likely to be considered for a promotion number six you don't care about others a big part of management and leadership is supporting other people supporting people in your team helping them grow and showing that you genuinely care about them you have to be the manager or the leader who is caring who is encouraging and who is supportive of others and you need to show this before you are ever promoted into a management or leadership position so if you want the best chances of getting promoted into a management or leadership position you need to start showing that you genuinely care about other people genuinely care about other people in your team this is something that you can absolutely do right now with your current co-workers with the current people in your team and people will start to notice this i guarantee it they'll start to see you as somebody who is supportive who is caring and this will be an extra point that will get you closer to a management or a leadership position in the future all that i've talked about in this video are about people skills and visibility skills so getting people to know who you are what value you bring and also connecting with them
