my name is dr ali jones a breast cancer surgeon here at the torrance memorial hunt cancer institute when newly diagnosed patients receive a lot of information and it can feel overwhelming in this video i am going to explain what sentinel lymph node mapping is during breast cancer surgery the surgeon will often assess lymph nodes to determine if the cancer has spread outside of the breast typically the first place the can breast cancer spreads is to the lymph nodes under the arm otherwise known as the axillary lymph nodes for many years the only way that a surgeon could assess this was to remove the majority of the lymph nodes a procedure called an axillary lymph node dissection fortunately now we have a technique called sentinel lymph node mapping and biopsy which is a minimally invasive approach during the surgery the primary drainage lymph nodes the ones that serve as the gatekeeper or sentinels are removed and checked for cancer if those nodes do not show any signs of cancer the oth
