V EHICLE TITLE AND REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS - In the state of Florida, you must register your motor vehicle within ten days of you becoming employed, placing children in a public school, or establishing residency. In order to obtain a title and registration for your vehicle in the state of Florida, you must meet the following requirements:  You must maintain liability insurance that is issued through a Florida agent with an insurance company licensed to sell in Florida in the minimum coverage amounts of $10,000 for personal injury protection (PIP) and $10,000 for property damage liability (PDL) as long as you have a valid Florida tag, even if your vehicle is in another state or inoperative. If you have been involved in a crash, or been convicted of certain offenses, you may also be required to purchase bodily injury liability coverage (BIL). If you do not maintain insurance on your vehicle, the Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles may suspend your driving privilege, including your vehicle tag and registration, for up to three years or until proof of Florida insurance is provided, whichever is first. In order to reinstate your license, you will then be required to pay a reinstatement fee of $150 up to $500, for subsequent violations, and provide proof of current Florida insurance.  You must take your proof of Florida insurance, your original out of state title and verification of the motor vehicle's vehicle identification number (VIN), completed on form HSMV 82040 or 82042 to your local Florida county tax collector’s office. If the out of state title is currently in the possession of an out of state lienholder, the tax collector's office will assist you in contacting the lienholder to obtain the title. The lien will be recorded on the Florida title when issued and will be mailed to the lienholder.  You must carry the registration certificate or an official copy in your possession or in your vehicle at all times to be produced for law enforcement upon demand. Please see the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles website at http://www.hsmv.state.fl.us/ and the Florida Department of State, Division of Elections website at http://election.dos.state.fl.us/index.html for further new resident and contact information.
