you are whether you have no idea what that is or you know what it is but you know how to get there or you know what it is you know how to get there but maybe that's a financial issues holding you back maybe it's a family holding you back maybe you have fear and doubt holding you back we can help you because once you're really really clear or you revisit clarity then the confidence that you need to four seven two five seven seven okay good article here from entrepreneur magazine that i think gives some very practical suggestions that i will echo on the idea of having a little bit more happiness in your day now i'm not a guy who's all about happy happy happy happy happy happy because sometimes you're not happy but you're you have joy however i think it is really important that people understand that you can even when life throws the curve balls it throws the detours or the potholes at you you could still have a degree of true pleasure in your day so it's a good piece here so we're going to roll through these really quick because that you'll find here that there's intentionality control which you can control and even when the unforeseen hits you um you should have a lot more juice in your day so here we go number one have a clear morning routine that's non-negotiable i agree with this there will be days where again something happens but you need a true routine to get yourself set i can't you know like i i can't emphasize enough don't wake up and go right to your social media don't go right to the news have some time to set yourself to create a daily purpose now this could go a lot of ways i think you have a purpose it's to be who you were created to be in your relationships and in your professional life but even as it relates to this day hey this is what i got to accomplish today this is what i need to do today put something very tangible on each day three carry out some type of physical exercise even if it's walking around during the lunch break for 10 minutes four eat good food get away from the processed garbage and all the sugar eat some food that helps to make your body feel better and you'd be surprised what that will do for your mood five have some engagement with quality meaningful relationships even if it's just family a little bit of time with your kids for bed create some time where there's some meaningful connection six stay active but don't be frenetic i love this one so many people get hung up on how busy they are as opposed to look i the idol hands devil workshop we all heard that your grandmother used to say that what does that mean like no human being really thrives when they just have a bunch of free time all day long and you just let your mind wander into the next thing that's not good be active be intentional but don't be frenetic and finally take some breaks i don't think i've ever revealed this before but i've got uh a putter and three four golf balls up at my desk and we have a large area with the ramsey personalities in our team sets and so it's a large area and we have you know the old carpet on the concrete so that makes for really good putting surfaces because it's fast it's pretty true but it is a concrete floor so you've got your you know you've got some places where i could put a i could put a cup and i get a little cup and i just sit sideways on the ground joe and i can get some putts where i've got about a three four foot break it's kind of fun you know i have a little competition or sometimes just pop by myself why do i do that i may only do that for five minutes so people walk by all the time they'll see me putting you know they're like what in the world's coleman doing it's just a break just a little mental break and i think those are really really important to just kind of flush and reset doesn't have to be a 30 minute break for heaven's sakes it definitely doesn't need to be a smoke break that's not good for anybody right but no judge don't judge me if that's your jam you know it's not my jam it's not good for you but those little breaks huge you know find a co-worker um every once in a while damon the brain leader and i will walk around the building yeah let's catch up about a 10 minute walk or so and that again is a flushing process you think well you think better when you're moving and again getting out of a setting changing the environment it's a nice day we have some gorgeous weather in middle tennessee this week and get outside a little bit a little break so there you go eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven coming up we've got some great job growth news i'm gonna tell you why that's happening and what that says about the next three to six months and why for some of you the stuff we're teaching every day is more important i'm living the dream what's going on since that's a term i use hey i've got a day job and it's pushing me about 60 hours a week and i've got my side hustle already figured out i know where i want to go teaching sales and leadership courses and whatnot my question is right now is there a market out there where i could take a baby step not a big leap but a baby step to go in and work for some companies that can't hire a 40 hour a week job where i could load in where they pay me and i handle taxes and i work for them maybe 20 30 hours a week is there a market for that doing what training other sales people like you want to do for yourself eventually or just selling yep doing that just training them on how to sell helping them with their onboarding process for new employees because you know after you know there's 90 days to win or lose an employee but you're specifically focused on sales people helping sales people start well in that first 90 days yes yeah of course i think there's a market for that there's no way for any market or there's no way for me to define that do you understand what i'm saying so i can't speak to you know uh data that's out there because it doesn't exist but i i'm saying yes there's a market for it because i i think there will always be a market for um sales gurus ninjas people that could come in and help a company who's got you know they've got some momentum but they don't you know they haven't been intentional with their sales training so training sales people to win training sales people to start there's always going to be a market for that i just don't know how hot it is but there's one way to find out try yes sir what do you have to lose well i have a family and stuff i want to support so i don't want to take a big leap i mean i've got my oh no i didn't yeah so wait a second i didn't say take a leap what i heard was i got a day job where i'm putting 60 hours a week and we need to address that that's not sustainable and then you've got the side hustle doing the sales training um stuff so how many hours a week are you putting in if you're doing 60 on the day job what's the side hustle what are you putting in on that i'm putting about 10 to 15. okay are you doing that because you're behind the eight ball financially or are you doing that out of sheer passion sheer passion okay great how are you working 75 hours a week how what kind of toll is that taking on you oh it's killing me and that's that's affecting my family they want me to switch jobs but if i just go switch a job chances are it's going to be this something similar where i'm just not happy and i know where i want to go why are you putting 60 hours a week in at the day job is that something that's highly recommended they're pressuring you to do that it's pressure because of workload they i have to get all this stuff done and they don't care just has to have everything done it's not really a good culture at this organization okay so how much are you making in that gig i'm six figures uh okay well so how much are you making on the side hustle for yourself right now not much it's you know i'm doing some virtual keynotes but that's i mean that's only a minimal yeah that's a longer slog that's that's going to take a little while but i want to encourage you you can get it there so we have an immediate need your family's crying out to you you need to listen to them you your heart your heart's hurting your it's killing you physically as well so what we've got to do is we've got to replace your uh we've got to we got to replace the current day job and that may take a little bit of time and in that time you need to back off the side hustle a little bit you can't keep doing 75 hours so if anything's going to give it's the thing that's not making any money right now because that opportunity's not going anywhere it's not like if you press pause on that that you've somehow delayed your success in that area um by it by a whole bunch i mean you're going to delay it some but it's not going to be detrimental because you've got to replace this day job and i would tell you that it is incorrect for you to assume that any other type of job like you're doing now is going to require 60 hours a week of you that's just an unhealthy culture and you can you can replace that work you need to and then when you get back down to a 40 hour week then you can put 10 15 maybe strategically that's not eating into family time into the side business so that's the adjustment that needs to be made and it's not going to be fun for you because you're a go-getter and ken i don't want to press pause on my dream job well you have to or you're going to lose your family you're going to lose their head and heart and i don't want that it's so vital that you hear them hear from them right now so i'd have a family meeting say hey dad's pressing pause on the side hustle that's going to give 15 hours back and you need to be really intentional to show them that the result of that and then i think you got to work with your leaders a little bit and see if we can get you back down to 50 get some efficiencies going on do whatever you got to do and then you're looking to replace that because that's just unhealthy eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven let's go to vancouver canada where princeton is on the line princeton you're on the ken coleman show hey ken how's it going man i am living the dream what's going on with you no that's great to talk to you big fan of your podcast um basically i'm 26 and uh i graduated from college like four years ago or five years ago and uh i don't know i didn't really have like a career i just tried a few different jobs and now i just recently last year kind of made a career change i'm just looking for some maybe like encouragement or advice to me i just want to know i'm doing the right thing um i switched i was into banking and then i switched and i started flying planes and i love it and i'm in aviation right now but uh i know i just feel like it's like i'm 26 again old and starting from the ground up going to school again being a broke all right so number one number one let's go ahead and this is hysterical everybody in the control room here is laughing because you just said something that i hope you never say ever again so it's not to continue to lose credibility that you're 26 and you feel like you're getting old so that is ridiculous all right there's no way you're old um are you going to school to be a pilot is that what you mean back in school yes yes okay well let me remind you of something you just said you went from banking to aviation and i thought i heard you say i love it i love flying in the friendly skies don't you i do yeah so what's just really expensive and uh it's just been a struggle lately getting myself through it again i know you know i know it is crazy expensive well i used to follow the steve ramsey baby steps and now i'm back to you know don't even have an emergency fund and it hurts why why do you not have an emergency fund why'd you get off of the baby steps uh well like i don't know any gas is pretty expensive and i was just i just burned through it just trying to get my licenses um yeah but hold on a second you know what you got you don't have a money problem you don't have a career problem you have a patience problem that's all this is so that's the good news the good news is this is not some you know ken why is this happening because you just you just couldn't wait which explains why you think you're getting old at 26. so bro here's the deal you don't really need me to tell you what to do practically because you know you know dave ramsey's baby steps you know it works yes or no yeah it works 100 does well okay so how much do you have to pay what how much are you in did please tell me you didn't go into debt for this aviation training yeah i did a little bit unfortunately how much um like 18 000. all right well okay that's manageable um what are you doing for a day job right now working off uh 10 hours a day uh delivering packages for amazon okay and um how much lefty how much more money do you have to fund to get trained to fly um almost done with my commercial license probably need about like five or ten or grand okay great so here's the deal yeah if i'm not mistaken you can press pause on some of this it's not like you have to do it all in one shot you can do it as you go am i correct yes okay it's just uh it's hard to press pause it's kind of like uh riding a bicycle you kind of lose a feeling so okay okay here's my point guess what then you're gonna have to work your fanny off you're gonna have to have no social life because you need to you need to cash flow the next five to ten and and and you just have to you there's no reason to go into debt for it that that would put you if we if it was the tent's gonna put you at 28 grand at 18 i mean now you know my point is is that i want you paying off the 18 is what i'd prefer and then you cash flow your way through the rest of it i don't think it's really going to hurt you yeah am i right yeah dude you're 26 you're gonna be in the air pretty soon i mean let's just run this timeline out okay if you get aggressive and pay the 18 grand off and then we slow the process down of getting trained until you can cash flow the next five to ten how long before you're ready to go ballpark um still probably a couple years yeah but here's the deal but you're 28 you're 20 you'll be 28 and you'll be doing what you love so you called with the call you called and started the call by co like basically saying ken am i on the right path well i think you are i know i know just sometimes i have doubts you know it's hard switching you know when you were stable and i get it but here's the deal do you want to be stable you want to be stable and safe at 70 or do you want to be smart and significant at 70. what do you want it's a lot of fun yeah of course you do man so i get it but this is the price of ad ission nobody just shows up and goes hey i want to fly i mean you you're laughing because you you but that's that's essentially you know that but you're acting as though that's the case well you know i just want it to happen now i get i want it to happen now you know um i want to be i want to be a good golfer princeton i really do but i play right now between five and six times a year is all i play so as a result i'm not a good golfer i played yesterday hit some really good shots by the way i hit a couple of bombs and it keeps me coming back but here's the reality is it reasonable for me to believe that i'm going to be a really good golfer playing five to six times a year no no i'm a bad golfer now i'm not gonna be a good golfer playing five to six times a year i'm have to put the time into it okay i got three kids right now i got a i got a full-time gig i can't just go play all the time there's a season of my life coming where i'll be able to do that so i don't care what it is hey i want to lose a hundred pounds well let me tell you something nobody loses a hundred pounds in two days or two weeks or even two months so all the things that we want in life things that are worthy things that are meaningful to us take time grab this concept you already know it you just got to start acting like it so here's the deal bust your butt to get out of debt you already know how you've been walking dave ramsey's baby steps and then you just decided well i'm just gonna go backwards no chill out you're 26 you've got first two clients coaching is where my heart is at i love it chris way to go fun stuff there five seven 844-747-2576 all right how about some good news job growth surges in february we just got uh this past week the update on the february job numbers the labor department reported uh that non-farm payrolls jumped by 379 000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell to 6.2 percent it was 6.3 so we'll take that tenth of a point that is a good sign now the 379 000 jobs added is really really great because the uh expectation was 210 000. so a sizable jump there so where did the jobs come from not a surprise i've been saying this for months i don't think anybody would have a brain can kind of see this when you've got states shut down and largely bars restaurants tourism things of that nature those have been shut down in many many states and in some states where they aren't shut down because people aren't traveling people aren't getting out well obviously those jobs have been hit hard so nearly all the job gains came from the leisure and hospitality sector with an increase of 355 000 jobs added in those areas i mean that's fantastic um bars and restaurants gained of that 355. bars and restaurants gained 286 000 jobs hotel 36 000 and then amusement and recreation businesses added 33. uh this industry is still 3.5 million so this is where the good news keeps coming and you're going wait a second ken we're still 3.5 million shortness industry yes but with the continued opening we're seeing several states governors made the announcements last week in the warm months coming up good news happening on the virus all the way around 3.5 million short of its unemployment level from a year ago so will we see all 3.5 million filled from a year ago probably not because you see a lot of restaurants and bars aren't coming back or recreationaries and that's tragic but do i think we'll see a majority of those 3.5 million come back yes i do and let's see what the experts say amy glaser is a senior vp of a national staffing firm said we're seeing great opportunities within the service sectors we anticipate as the weather continues to get warmer the hospitality sector will start to explode in the next eight to twelve weeks that's great news that is absolutely great news and i think she's absolutely right they're looking at the data they're far more in the weeds than i am i'm coming at it from common sense so i think this is great i think it's really really good and so i'm really encouraged by these numbers so now more than ever you need to be ready you need to be ready i know some really sharp people in the hotel industry and they've just been waiting and waiting and waiting we've had callers on the show same thing so now is the time to get ready and if you want to here's where here's where this is gets really dicey you come in and you go hey i got a job offer from somebody else and it's making 15 grand more what do you think not a good idea uh i'm okay with you bringing it up if you have verbally accepted or you've got the deal on the table you've accepted and then they come at you and you say hey listen i'm leaving i'm going here i don't like the leverage game if you commit to the other thing you can always change your mind if your current company is is a great opportunity for you and then they come and go hey we don't want you to leave i'm okay with that but just playing the shell game playing one company against the other i don't like it i don't like it at all because it can only backfire you know i mean it because it's it rarely works if you haven't accepted the other one and you're just dangling it it really oh please don't leave i just don't see that happening i think the only way that can go is bad now if you accept the other and go hey i think it's a better move for me and i've accepted it and they come back and offer you more money then you've still got to go well is this where i need to be this is not about money so that's why i don't like it i just think it goes badly i really do uh mason i wonder what ken's advice is to someone who's not a superstar now what does that mean i i mean that's really interesting here's my advice on that if you're not a superstar find where you can be a superstar hello that's stage one of my seven stages to me for it let's find out mason or if you're asking for a friend where can they be a superstar because i believe that if everybody has talent and i do then that means you can be really really good in an area so like i can't be a superstar in golf as we've already picked on myself a little bit today i can't don't have the talent but i think it can be a superstar broadcaster i really do think it could be a superstar author i do so but but that comes from evidence right and and i'm not there can i get there i believe so i'm gonna give it everything i can but find where you can be a superstar then now we realize so this is not wasted effort this isn't delusional i can really really work on some raw talent and hone it into some sharp skills that's and to be really really great at what you do to me that's a superstar i'm not talking about fame and fortune that to me that is a that is an awful motivator but if if we're saying superstar means you can be great then i'm all for that and you can be great at something eight four four seven four seven two five seven seven let's go to stephen who joins us in san francisco california stephen you're on the ken coleman show again thanks for taking my call you bet so i yeah so i am a highlight administrator and i've been inherited for about four to five years and i'm looking to make a switch over to information technology and i want to work with companies that offer i.t solutions to higher education still okay my question to you is i don't know anybody in in that industry and i don't know anybody in the company that i'm looking at and i really want to establish a connection before i submit my application materials yeah so they don't start giving a pile and you know i've never heard it okay um and i'm trying to figure out how i can reach out to these companies and get a hold of someone in hr or recruitment management i'm having a difficult time getting a hold of a person to connect with and i was wondering if you have some advice to any kind of that transition yeah so here's the deal this is going to be half this is a digging process you're going to have to commit to digging going two and three levels deeper so in this case it's not about who you know it's about who they know let me explain it's about who you know that may know somebody because you personally are going i don't know anybody in company abc i just don't know anybody so the question becomes of all the people that you know now this includes linkedin facebook instagram uh acquaintances from previous jobs i mean anybody you've ever had a conversation with where you feel like you might get a response from okay that's how broad we're talking about because that's how this works and so you go just do i know anybody who knows somebody so it's not about who i know it's who they know so have you dug into that layer the next layer down i you know i've i've tried and i've started i'm not super active on social media i have a facebook or a linkedin i do it on instagram but it's kind of hard to tell you know looking at instagram who works where and who does what no i get that and that's different that's right so so my point is is that but uh you know you still know people how many people do you think you know in the san francisco area give me and i don't mean just close personal relationships i mean acquaintances people that if you saw them on the sidewalk they'd stop you'd stop you'd have small talk if you emailed them they'd email you back if you called them they'd call you back how many people sure uh 40 30 to 40 folks i think 40 people that's all you know are you are you a recluse a little bit kind of stay in a lot no not really you so just super brought anybody huh yeah i just made that about as clear as i could make it an acquaintance yeah like they don't have to be a dear friend i'm saying you saw him on the street or you see him in the grocery and you go oh hey man and they go hey hey how are you that's what i'm talking about do you know what acquaintance means of course you do yeah so how many people about a hundred ish something like that i think that's more accurate all right yeah how many acquaintances and let's say close personal line of coins would each of those 100 people know would you guess another couple hundred yeah so how many people do you have access to have you done the math real quick right yeah yeah i see where you're going okay that's how this works though dude i mean that's really how it works and by the way sociology research backs me up this isn't like a cute little ken coleman opinion where i got out a pencil and a pad of paper one day and went i think i'll try to sell this to people no the research says that most people get jobs through their acquaintances a guy by the name of mark granovetter you can look me up look check me out on this mark granovator well-known sociologist did some research most people get jobs through acquaintances so this could be people you work out with that you have a conversation with every once in a while right but you've never gone deep but you know you just start talking hey i'm looking for i'm i want to get in at abc company abc over there you start talking about it and you oh i know somebody over there oh i heard good things about that so that's where i'd start on the making some connection now the other thing i would do is i'd get busy i'd start i'd start connecting on linkedin and start getting active over there because i think without too much effort you could get some phone number over there in that company and get hr on the phone now a lot of companies will try to hide that stuff and they want online submissions only so that is a reality but i'll bet you know where their address is don't you can i can i ask on more follow-up question of course um so do you recommend that is it is it a good strategy to kind of establish that relationship before you submit application materials yes i like that i like that i like that that's my preference however let me give you something practical here this may take you a little bit of time to do this given what you've laid out for me today so here's another thing that could work do you know anybody who is pretty respected in i.t in the i.t industry um i could find some connections if i connected with folks here in my where i worked in my university and they could probably connect all right so what if what if you started to connect with some people that are really impressive they hold i.t positions maybe even higher up the ladder than you're even going for and what if you get to know them and they vouch for you and so at the top of your ken coleman template which you've used the ken coleman resume it leads off with who i know and what if you have two really killer endorsement statements from people that hold lofty i.t positions and really recognizable companies that could work to get somebody's attention when you submit that don't you think yeah for sure that's what i'm talking about so it doesn't always have to be somebody that is working in the company that's preferable but if you can't find that quickly and you want to apply then then if you're already qualified which i'm assuming you are um i am you know i'm i'm looking financially right now and i'm trying to move over to customer relations and account management and a lot of what i do is very translatable good um and i'm i'm having an easy time translating my skillset onto that screen so here's a deal if it's an i.t position make sure that you got the i.t qualifications you got to have the qualifications if you're qualified then we get connected that's why the stages go like this get clear which you know what you want to do that's stage one get qualified to stage two stage three is get connected you can do both of those stages at the same time if you're in the process of getting qualified you can be getting connected so that opportunities come your way and your phone call's really about stage three getting connected so i i'm trying to encourage you that that i do think you could find somebody that knows somebody maybe three or four degrees down but that that is always good if someone will submit your resume personally and say i've heard good things about steven here's how i know about stephen okay that's the ideal but when you can't do that or you it's going to take too long and you've got an opportunity then go for it but you've got to go connect with other really impressive people in tech and if they'll write an endorsement state for you and say i think steven's a great fit because of this this and this and somebody sees that this is stronger than just a reference this is a what i teach is is an endorsement quote from somebody that's relevant to the job and the industry you're going for and you understand that so go about doing that and again it's going to make you stand out from the crowd just think about how many resumes are being electronically or digitally submitted it's mind-boggling it's mind-boggling just is and i'm being provocative when i say that because i think it's like playing the lottery i really do can you get hired by submitting online yes does the ken coleman show resume help you get
