You need to open an NPS account which will be uniform for you across all sectors. There are simple processes. One option is to go through a Point of Presence such as any NPS enabled bank. There again you have option of signing up online if you have existing netbanking facility for that bank. For example, if you have ICICI bank account and hence you can sign up through netbanking page since your KYC is already updated. You also go for manual form filling and submit the KYC documents there. It takes around 7 working days to get your PRAN number generated as it is done by a central record keeping agency.Another option is to go for E-NPS and sign up directly on the website of NSDL. It will be a PAN number based verification online.Following account activation, you can make your individual contributions. In case your company is NPS enabled, you can get in touch with your HR so that they may call the bank people they have tie up with for NPS.Coming to part or your investment, you have to control your portfolio. There are 4 asset classes - A, E, C, G.A stands for alternate assets and is a high risk class. Hence not recommended for anyone. It anyone wants to do it, there is a capping of max 5% of your portfolio.E stands for equity. It has a capping of max 75%. Corporate bonds and Government securities have no capping. Well it is understandable that risks and returns decerease from A to G. You can decide the portfolio you want to invest in and change it once every financial year. Another important factor is to choose a fund manager which will make the investment on your behalf. Currently in the market ICICI Prudential and HDFC have the best returns and that trend will continue. So you are better off choosing one of them.
