What are some interesting startups in the education space? Why are they interesting?
Here's one noteworthy peer-to-peer education model in Paris newly opened in November 2013 to students around the world, tuition FREE! — École 42 — The school, housed in a former government building used to educate teachers (ironically enough), was started by Xavier Niel. The founder and majority owner of French ISP Free, Niel is a billionaire many times over. He’s not well known in the U.S., but here he is revered as one of the country’s great entrepreneurial successes in tech. This French Tech School Has No Teachers, No Books, No tuition — And It Could Change EverythingAbove: Nicolas Sadirac, the director of the ambitious, free, French tech school Ecole 42. Image Credit: Dylan Tweney/VentureBeatNicolas Sadirac, a French entrepreneur and educator, is the school’s director. Before École 42 he ran Epitech, a well-regarded, private, for-profit school that trained software engineers.PARIS — École 42 might be one of the most ambitious experiments in engineering education. It has no teachers. No books. No MOOCs. No dorms, gyms, labs, or student centers. No tuition. And yet it plans to turn out highly qualified, motivated software engineers, each of whom has gone through an intensive two- to three-year program designed to teach them everything they need to know to become outstanding programmers. The school, housed in a former government building used to educate teachers (ironically enough), was started by Xavier Niel. The founder and majority owner of French ISP Free, Niel is a billionaire many times over. He’s not well known in the U.S., but here he is revered as one of the country’s great entrepreneurial successes in tech. He is also irrepressibly upbeat, smiling and laughing almost nonstop for the hour that he led a tour through École 42 earlier this week. (Who wouldn’t be, with that much wealth? Yet I have met much more dour billionaires before.) Niel started École 42 with a 70 million euro donation. He has no plans for it to make money, ever.“I know one business, and that’s how to make software,” Niel said. “I made a lot of money and I want to give something back to my country,” he explained. To make the school self-sustaining, he figures that future alumni will give back to their school, just as alumni of other schools do. If a few of them become very rich, as Niel has, perhaps they, too, will give millions to keep it going. The basic idea of École 42 is to throw all the students — 800 to 1,000 per year — into a single building in the heart of Paris, give them Macs with big Cinema displays, and throw increasingly difficult programming challenges at them. The students are given little direction about how to solve the problems, so they have to turn to each other — and to the Internet — to figure out the solutions. The challenges are surprisingly difficult. One student I talked with was coding a ray tracer and building an emulation of the 3-D dungeon in Castle Wolfenstein within his first few months at the school. Six months earlier, he had barely touched a computer and knew nothing of programming. He hadn’t even finished high school. In fact, 40% of École 42′s students haven’t finished high school. Others have graduated from Stanford or MIT or other prestigious institutions. But École 42 doesn’t care about their background — all it cares about is whether they can complete the projects and move on. The only requirement is that they be between the ages of 18 and 30.“We don’t ask anything about what they’ve done before,” Niel said.Yet École 42 is harder to get into than Harvard: Last year, 70,000 people attempted the online qualification test. 20,000 completed the test, and of those, 4,000 were invited to spend four weeks in Paris doing an intensive project that had them working upwards of 100 hours a week on various coding challenges. In the end, 890 students were selected for the school’s inaugural class, which began in November, 2013. (The average age is 22, and 11 percent of the first class is female.)890 students out of 70,000 applicants means an acceptance rate a little north of 1%, or if you only count those who completed the test, 4.5%. By contrast, Harvard accepts about 6% of its applicants. And, even with financial aid, it charges a whole lot more than ZERO for its classes. The upshot: If it works, the school’s course of education will produce coders who are incredibly self-motivated, well-rounded in all aspects of software engineering, and willing to work hard. (The four-week tryout alone, with its 100-hour weeks, blows away the French government’s official 35-hour-work week.)All of École 42′s projects are meant to be collaborative, so the students work in teams of two to five people. At first glance, the École’s classrooms look a little bit like a factory floor or a coding sweatshop, with row after row of Aeron-style chairs facing row after row of big monitors. But a closer look reveals that the layout is designed to facilitate small-group collaboration, with the monitors staggered so that students can easily talk to one another, on the diagonals between the monitors or side by side with the people next to them. Students can come and go as they please; the school is open 24 hours a day and has a well-appointed cafeteria in the basement (with a wine cellar that can hold 5,000 bottles, just in case the school needs to host any parties).Students share all of their code on Github (naturally). They communicate with one another, and receive challenges and tests, via the school’s intranet. Everything else they figure out on their own, whether it means learning trigonometry, figuring out the syntax for C code, or picking up techniques to index a database.Tests are essentially pass-fail: Your team either completes the project or it doesn’t. One administrator compared it to making a car: In other schools, getting a test 90% right means an A; but if you make a car with just three out of four wheels, it is a failure. At École 42, you don’t get points for making it part way there — you have to make a car with all four wheels. The no-teachers approach makes sense, as nearly anything you need to know about programming can now be found, for free, on the Internet. Motivated people can easily teach themselves any language they need to know in a few months of intensive work. But motivation is what’s hard to come by, and to sustain — ask anyone who has tried out Codecademy but not stuck with it. That has prompted the creation of “learn to code” bootcamps and schools around the world. École 42 takes a similar inspiration but allows the students to generate their own enthusiasm via collaborative (and somewhat competitive) teamwork.Sadirac and Niel say that some prestigious universities have already expressed interest in the school’s approach. The two are considering syndicating the model to create similar schools in other countries. But even if they never expand beyond Paris, École 42 could become a signNow force in software education. France already has a reputation for creating great engineers (in software as well as in many other fields). If École 42 adds another thousand highly-motivated, entrepreneurial software engineers to the mix every year, it could very quickly accelerate this country’s competitiveness in tech. And the model will force schools like Harvard to make an extra effort to justify their high tuitions. If you can get training like this for free, and you want to be a software engineer, why go to Harvard?(news link:) This French tech school has no teachers, no books, no tuition -- and it could change everything

What are some interesting campus recruitment rejection stories?
This didn’t happen to a friend of mine :PThis happened to me !There was this Data Analytics Startup company (Now Stop Guessing, Its not MUSIGMA, I wasn’t even shortlisted in the first round of MUSIGMA)..The Job Post said, “We are looking for minds who can innovate. No prerequisites. Any candidate from any department who has a CGPA above 8 can enroll.’’First Round: I had a CGPA of 8.3. So I appeared for the screening test. Screening test primarily consisted of questions that test your personality. From the whole university only 14 people were selected. I was one among the 14.Second Round: We had this Group Discussion on the topic, How science can be incorporated into movies to make stunts more realistic, at least theoretically ?Oratory and Writing was never a problem for me since childhood. So got through the round 2.5 were shortlisted from 14 for the final round.Final Round: I went into the Interview Room. There were 2 interviewers in the panel.Interview kick started with normal basic HR interview type questions, I was painting the smile on the face of the interviewers with every answer of mine. (The skill which I developed over consecutive fall outs in the first round of 8 companies that visited my college previously.)Interviewers: So Ganesh, Your Resume says you are from ECE, How comfortable are you, with coding ?Me: I am pretty much comfortable sir, though am no coding geek. In the past 6 semesters, I have had good amount of exposure to coding. I learnt C, CPP BASICS (Appending Basics to every skill set of yours, was always a safe option ) in my first year. After getting into department, I got familiarized with MATLAB and SCILAB. I took Virtual Instrumentation Elective so I have a good amount of knowledge in Labview too.Interviewer: I can see it from your mini projects, that you have a good knowledge in software tools relating to your domain (ECE). But we are a Data Analytics Company, so tell us if you have any previous experience with any of the Data Analytics tool ?Me: No sir. I don’t have any. Maybe I could relate a bit to the Scopus journal which am currently working under my Mentor. Since it is a journal paper I cannot let you the details completely. So I’ll just let you know the concept of the base journal. We collect the data from MIMO systems, process it and predict the perfect Transceiver design. And MATLAB serves the purpose.Interviewer: Do you have any luck with R language or Hadoop ?(Luck! I smelled his Sarcasm)Me: No Sir, I did my 11th and 12th through State-Board. When I joined college, I used to envy at people who did 11th & 12th through CBSE, find coding so comfortable. Those guys who could write Double Linked List code with such ease scared me. Then slowly I learnt, I started to get the hang of it. And here I am, ending up in the Top 5. So I feel I can learn the languages required for our company too in due course of time.Interviewer: I can understand your desperation to get placed. But, hereafter when you are applying for a company, first sit and check whether your profile matches with the company’s profile. Thanks !(Desperation to get Placed ! Enough Said !)Me: I can understand that you couldn’t find me a place in your firm. With all due respect, I applied for this company just because you have mentioned “No Prerequisites” in the Job post. Hope you edit in the future Job posts of yours. Thanks !Result:REJECTED !!

What are best practices to avoid burnout among employees as employer?
My experience is burnout happens two ways:The employer sets unrealistic demands and drive people to meet them. If one gives employees some say in schedules, agreement that they are aggressive, but realistic, it helps. Also, recognizing the efforts helps. And make sure that people use their PTO and really disconnect while on PTO. No one should be indispensable and make sure they are aware. Also, if the employer demonstrates a work-life balance, the employees frequently follow. When a team makes a deadline, maybe a day off. Or like Google, give employees one day a week to better themselves. W...

While sitting parked in your car, a car next to you opens their door carelessly, hitting your car. What do you do?
Yeah, this happened to me. I was sitting in my truck with my wife in a parking lot. We had just pulled in so the truck was still on as she was finishing her text message. Now I take pride in my vehicles. The truck was 8 years old. I'm the only owner. I know every mark on my truck. In fact this was the first ding to ever grace my truck.Anyway, this silver Pontiac Grand Prix parks next to me. As I am turning off my engine, my truck suddenly shakes from side to side with a distinctive bang. My wife looks at me and asks “what's wrong with your truck?” Puzzled, I look in my driver side mirror and see a car door pushed into my rear driver door. I mean an actual dent that is pushed in and is about 6 inches tall. This kid (around 17) just closes the door and walks into the Vape store like nothing happened. This instantly sent me into a deep rage. I and my wife follow him into the store and I straight up ask “So we just open doors into other vehicles and damage and act like nothing happened?” He asks like he has no clue what I'm talking about. I firmly explain to him that I was sitting in my truck when he open the passenger door directly into my truck. He said it's not possible and that he would've noticed if he had done such an act. I then explained that my truck weighs 6700 lbs and his door weighs far less than that. How can he shake my truck from a door and NOT notice? I told him he going to pay for it. We exchange numbers. Told him I'll get estimates and contact him later so we can work it out. I didn't feel the need for insurance or getting his parents involved. Just fix my dent and scratch. So I get my estimates. Three places all quoted 150 bucks. Nothing crazy. I even pay it myself and just try to contact him for reimbursement. Even willing to take payments since he's a teen. Never returned calls or texts. Now I'm getting mad on principle. One day I'm in the high school parking lot. Yes I was there for a real reason. My daughter goes to the same high school. I notice the same car in the parking lot, so I snap a picture with the plate visible. I go around the corner to the police station and report it. Not official report, just that I would like to somehow get the parents involved now so I can get my money back. Cops run the plates and contact the owner. It's the dude’s girlfriend’s car, but in her parents’ name. Lol. This is where it almost got crazy. The girl’s parents start raising hell. And getting the dude’s parents on the bandwagon. They accuse me of stalking and want a restraining order. I get a phone from the cop assigned to the high school.Cop: “Hey Sir, it’s officer xxxx from the high school. How you been?”Me: “I'm good. How about you man?”Cop: “Living the dream. Lol…”As you might be able to see we know each other. He informs me that the girl is afraid I'm stalking her. Since we are friends he already knows my answer. “I was there picking up my daughter and recognised the car so I seized the opportunity.” He says “yeah I figured that and already told my superiors.” Eventually the parent “drop" the accusation. The dude’s dad finally contacts me and arranges to meet to reimburse me, provided I have “a receipt as proof I had the work done" I show him the receipt, plus a picture of the dent and how it met perfectly with the car door, and even pictures of the work being done by a professional. Guess he wasn’t expecting that, as he says he has to go inside the bank to get the cash. (Bank is where we met). He’s in there for almost 20 mins. I stayed outside so he doesn’t feel I'm “stalking” him now. Once he returns, he pays me 150 bucks in 1s. Laughing and smiling as he does it. I stay straight-faced as he counts and hands it to me. When he’s done he just has this sneer on his face. I say “thanks, saves me breaking big bills before I go to the strip club"As I drive off I have this weird suspicion he’s going to follow me. I don’t know why, but I did. Sure enough, he did. I could tell because I took a scenic route with additional turns. Well I don’t want this guy knowing where I live, so I go to strip club, pull in the parking lot, wave to him as he drives by slowly, and walk inside. I stay inside just long enough to make sure he didn’t park and hide. Called my wife explained that I'm hiding at the strip club and why. She laughs.I've never seen the teens nor the dad since.

What dirty business tactics do you know?
Last Saturday, I ordered pizzas from Dominos. I heard the Customer Care guy saying, “Your pizzas will be delivered within 30 minutes.” I asked him, “Do you still have this 30 minutes offer?” I asked him because, for some reason, I was under the impression that they discontinued this offer long back. Cool! I thought.Within a minute, I got a call from the local branch. A girl was on the call. She: Sir, you just placed the order, and you order is xxxx..!Me: Yeah! She: I am sorry but your pizzas will be delivered in 45 to 50 minutes.Me: Why so?She: On Saturdays and Sundays we have more orders, so...

What did you learn from campus placements experience at IIT?
These are some things I learnt as my placement season was just 2 months back in December 2017 -No matter how knowledgeable you think you are, if there comes a choice between you and a person with same or slightly less knowledge but from a circuit branch, bye bye to you. You won't get that job.No matter how outstanding you think you are, if you haven't had any experience in the skill (technical) which company is looking for, you won't get selected.Good grades sometimes lead to bad outcomes because good grades signal the interviewer that you might leave the company and go for Masters or MBA. I faced this in my interview as well, so be prepared. The Training and Placement Cell is a very powerful authority in those 15 days of placement season. I won't write much, but just read it again, “most powerful”.Giving an interview is like a stand-up comedy act, you wait till the first laugh and everything takes off from there. Similarly, when you get your first “good answer, let’s move on” response from the interviewer, all anxiety, stress, nervousness gets over. This is usually a good sign. The female inequality which prevailed in the world few decades back (and still some) is very bad for a male candidate sitting for placements because companies have hire more girls to improve their gender ratio. You have to live with this reality, period. If you don't believe in luck, I welcome you here to witness the placement season in an IIT, you'll start believing in it after that.If you have got a job, congratulations, you deserve it. If you haven't, this doesn't mean you don't. This means that you are not at par with the ones who got a job. Keep trying. The ones who are “stud” or “bhaukaal” (Banaras special word, same meaning as stud) don't even get a job sometimes. Again, luck plays an important role. The TPO doesn't owe you a job, they are just helping so that you can get a job. Nobody owes you anything, so don't cry for whatever has happened. As in 3 idiots, the interviewer says, “Job paane k liye log hmaari haan mai haan mila hi lete hai”, which is quite apt because people sometimes lie to get a job.The resume is very important part of your interview. Even if it seems that they don't read it for more than 30–40 seconds, they always give pretty good look at it. So, don't write false stuff, get a good template and keep it professional. Though my resume was very simple according to me, many students and all interviewers (whom I faced) were pretty praised about it. Please spend time on your resume, it will pay off.Thats all!Edit: Changing the last point a bit. There are many requests coming to me regarding sharing my resume.I cannot share it.It's for your own benefit and mine too.

I left my job without telling anyone, now my boss has been trying to signNow me. What should I do?
Your boss is worried about you - call them.I once had an employee who failed to show up for her shift. She could be a bit flaky so we did not think that much of it, and we had been having some issues with them. Then we realized that she should have worked the day before, but due to a mistake on the schedule we had not realized that she had missed that shift. So we called her - she did not answer. So we called her sister - who did not immediately call us back.So we called her neighbor. Her neighbor found her on the floor where she had lain for two days following a stroke. Our employee was permanently hospitalized. She never walked again, and died a year later.Ghosting your employer, because you can’t have the decency to inform them that you are quitting has consequences. You may not think that your employer cares about you, they may not, but you may also be surprised.Since that incident with my employee I have called the police three times to perform well checks on employees who could not be bothered to think of the consequences of not showing up to work. It takes an emotional toll. It takes an emotional toll on your emergency contacts, because they are the first ones that employers will call. And of course, forget about ever being employed by that employer, or that manager at any point in the future.Give notice, act professional; you’ll be surprised how far this will get you.
