How do you work on RESTful API architecture, design & documentation?
From my experience and my readings I really stick to the concepts from the book "RESTful Web Services" from O'Reilly which is agnostic in terms of language even when there're examples in Ruby. Also, as an architect myself there's a concept you have to follow always, documenting architecture is the first you have to do at least a basic level, it means by the time you document you already went through the process of analysis and architectural design decisions about the solution. It doesn't mean to document everything, but at least document the necessary items that reflect the rationale of your design. Documentation needs to be refined later but your decissions are the first to start working. So once you have it ready the steps (taken from the book) are (I include my comments):1. Figure out the data setYou need to understand the data set or have an idea before starting2. Split the data into resourcesResources reflect anything interesting that need to be exposed3. For each resource Name the resources with URIsSelf-explanatory4. Expose a subset of the uniform interface5. Design the representation(s) accepted from the client6. Design the representation(s) served to the client7. Integrate this resource into existing resources8. Consider the typical course of events9. Consider error conditionsNow I add my own perspective. I've rarely seen an API that's interesting enough that couldn't be split into many programmers. But the key is define the layout first, rules, data access, URIs, practices and patterns. That's something that could be normally coded by one or two people, after creating this layout there're many people that could work in parallel, of course, strong dependencies must be considered.Briefly I would say:1. Start with the architecture (1 Architect, Teach Lead, Designer)2. Start with the API Layout (1 or 2 developers)3. Code the rest (as many as you can split the work into)
