Why are voter ID laws so controversial? Assuming that state issued photo IDs are made easy to procure, then what's the problem?
The simplest place to start is that Voter ID laws have an impact on the outcome of an election. People who are engaged in society almost all have a legal form of ID, and they skew Republican compared to people who are living off the grid for any of several reasons, who generally skew Democratic. Though there have been exceptions, with 2008 being the best and most recent example, Republicans tend to be more likely to vote than Democrats. Even in states where there is no voter id law, this is an undisputed fact on the ground. It's an old not-joke that Republicans love to see bad weather on Election Day, because it makes a Republican win slightly more likely. Polls of all registered voters usually show Democrats two or even more percentage points ahead of where they appear if the poll is of likely voters.Republicans like democracy. The question is whether it is defined as rule by a majority of all citizens, or by a majority of those who cast a vote. Obviously what a Republican would like to see is that every eligible voter in the country would register, educate themselves, and come out and cast a Republican vote. Even if they could get away with it, which they plainly could not, Republicans do not want to win elections by manipulating the outcome. They have a partisan motive to suppress turnout, and when they've been found guilty of doing that, they often end up literally behind bars. Republicans obviously do not have a partisan motive to increase general turnout. It would seem that both parties could agree on any system that allows every voter an equal opportunity to cast a legal vote. But there is no such system. The Republican will say that we have a system that is easy enough, and makes it possible for anybody who wants to do so to cast a vote. The Democrat will say that low turnout is proof that it wasn't easy enough. When it comes to balancing expense versus achieving universal voting, Republicans have a political motive to remove obvious obstacles and then let the people who want to vote cast their votes. It is equally partisan to suggest an extreme on the other end; we could conduct elections much more like the way we do a census; we could hire millions of people to go to their houses and collect their opinion, whether they had any interest in providing it or not. It would come closer to the ideal of democracy. We spend money running elections. We could install more voting machines in more voting locations, and boost turnout slightly. The cost would be high. At some point surely even someone who is dedicated to the notion that every citizen should vote will perceive a crossover point at which collecting more votes is not worth the cost. But it seems inevitable that a small government party will come into conflict on this issue when debating with a party that will directly benefit from more spending. With no voter id law whatsoever, it's harder to vote if you're poor. It is also harder to eat well and harder to get a good education and harder to get to work. All are rights that we want to work very hard to guarantee to every American. But we can't make it equally easy for poor people to do much of anything - your life isn't equal to prosperous citizens when you don't have any money. As of today, almost all Americans can request an absentee ballot by telephone, fill it out, mail it in, and have their vote counted. I am unaware of laws that require forms of ID that are expensive to obtain. I would like to learn more. It is my understanding that voter id laws include provisions to make the process of obtaining an ID no more difficult than voting itself. And a word about racism follows.A hundred years ago in many areas of this country you could legally discriminate on the basis of color. (Obviously you could do that much more recently, as well: I myself went to a legally all-white school as a first grader. I am that old.) Later, you could charge a poll tax. As a shameful but interesting bit of ephemera from the elections of years past, I have a poll tax receipt signed by my grandfather in 1932. The poll tax was $1.00, and that was a sufficiently high fee to prevent most African Americans from voting. The question now is whether the cost of an ID card is high enough that it prevents many minorities from casting a vote. Because of a legacy of centuries of racial discrimination, anything that impacts the poor impacts a higher percentage of minorities than whites. However, in any given income bracket, whites make up the majority. A policy that adversely affects the poor affects more white people than black people. This math isn't difficult, but it means that disproportionate impacts on African Americans are also primarily visited upon whites. If I had a political strategy that called for reducing black votes and getting white votes, a poll tax (or any poverty-driven mechanism) would be illogical in the extreme. Those who try to make a case that Republicans are in favor of laws that do not maximize the turnout of poor voters have an argument, because more government money could pay for more mechanisms to gather votes. Those who try to make an argument that Republicans are in favor of laws that are aimed at hurting minorities are at best mistaken, completely and utterly. If they have signNowed this conclusion without thinking through the math, they are expressing a valid concern that has to be discussed and addressed. If they are saying that the voter id laws are racially motivated even though they understand the math, and are merely asserting this accusation because it is damaging to the Republican Party, they are engaging in a common form of partisan politicking. In this case, it strikes me as being far out of bounds, both because it ascribes completely unacceptable moral qualities to Republicans with no evidence, and because it serves to shed heat on the discussion instead of light. It is demagoguery, and I condemn it in the strongest terms I know how to express politely.

Where can one find an appropriate template to make a sales plan for a startup?
I know I am not answering the question but this is important. There are two states of a startup. First is figuring out what sells and how to scale it. Sales planning may be useless or even counter productive during this stage. For instance, your investors and management will fixate on the numbers once you guesstimate your sales numbers. In short, you are better off just tracking your actual sales and really listening to the "burning needs" among your customer or user base.Sales projection for the second state is fairly straightforward compared to the first state. You should know the drivers of your sales by now. There are numerous tools out there (or you could build one) that can use these drivers and project sales. The projections end up being your budget and plan.

Has anyone divorced without attorneys? What was your experience?
I didn’t - but my ex-husband did!I’ve written about our divorce - and his alcoholism that led to it - before on here so I won’t rake over those coals again, but when I knew the marriage was over & I had to get out to keep my life and sanity intact, I had a feeling he’d do exactly what he did, and try and ignore the matter.I was very choosy in my choice of divorce specialist. My ex-husband still had a fantastic income and his family were more than comfortable as far as money went. I was doing this alone as a disabled mum claiming benefits. By the time we got to the actual divorce stage of the relationship I knew I just wanted out and quickly. I didn’t want any maintenance, no pay outs, we had no children together, no assets, no savings, lived in s rented house and only 1 mutual debt I stupidly thought we’d already arranged to jointly clear, so I just wanted someone to understand that & help me get a quick clean break. After speaking to 3 other practitioners, I found the wonderful lady who did my paperwork. I told her everything relevant and let her do what she had to.My soon-to-be-ex-husband was eyeball deep in a bottle and denial, so would not even acknowledge any letters from her, let alone hire his own solicitor.I guess I could have taken advantage, and I know many solicitors and clients who would have, but that’s not me, nor was it the legal executive I chose to do my work, and that’s exactly why I chose her. Yes, it was my ex-husbands duty to get his own legal counsel who would serve his best interests but I knew he wouldn’t, I knew he’d stick his head in the sand and as I said, I just wanted to be out of it and safely by that point. He never acknowledged a single letter. Not one. In the end we had to pay for official court servers to take the documents to him and for them to swear service. A judge took forever to sign off on it because neither my ex (nor the solicitor he couldn’t be bothered to employ) was looking out for his best interests! It took twice as long as it should have done all because he refused to acknowledge or answer any official papers.I also know his mother actively pleaded with him to retain legal services, she even offered to pay for it, (yes, they probably were hiding money and/or assets but I really didn’t care by that point, getting away safely from an abusive drunk was my only priority) so he just continued & consistently avoided the whole issue. He didn’t see a solicitor. He didn’t reply to any legal letters, he refused to acknowledge court orders, he acted as if none of it was even happening. And I actively pleaded with the rightly furious presiding Judge more than once NOT to find him in contempt of Court for his behaviour! The guy was fit to burst a blood vessel apparently! I think my ex thought it would stop the divorce if he ignored it, obviously it didn’t. Everything was double checked with a fine tooth comb to ensure he wasn’t being taken advantage of but there’s only so far a Court can protect someone who refuses to participate, he was given every opportunity to speak up and hire his own legal team. He refused to. It was obvious he could afford it, it was definite he’d had the papers served on him, he lived a 2 minute walk from the Court too, but he made it clear it was a ‘won’t’ participate rather than a ‘cant’ and I doubt that anyone took too kindly to all the extra wasted time & effort that caused.I know I could have been a bitch, I know with a different solicitor I could have taken him to the cleaners and probably financially cleaned up but I’m not built that way. I’m appreciate I’m probably also in a minority for that viewpoint too; I worked in family law for longer than my nerves could stand, I’ve seen what happens when people think they ‘know’ the law and their rights. Men & women can & do behave like savages once divorce papers get drawn up.Pro-top: Solicitors don’t spend years in school just learning to iron their suits, and wrote neatly, they actually really learn & know stuff, and how to apply said stuff that the common man doesn’t, they’ve worked and studied for years to hone that knowledge, to stay upto date with that knowledge and to know how best to protect you & your interests with that knowledge . They may be expensive but they are worth it. You pay them for their expertise in best knowing how to look after you and yours. They know your best interests better than you do. They think of the things you don’t, they know things you don’t, they antipathetic the things you don’t - they think straight with the cold facts when you don’t because your emotions are still on the spin cycle. Whatever they cost you, what they’ve saved you in the long run will more than make up for it.So yes, you can divorce without a solicitor. Maybe your soon-to-be-ex-spouse is one of the minority like me who just wants to split and get a clean break, and did I mention I had previously also found my ex accommodation and even brought him at my expense the majority of the contents of our home too? (I really wanted a guilt free clean break and fresh start - I mean REALLY, I wanted him to have no possible reason to ever need to contact me again)But I wouldn’t ever advise it to anyone else. You need to have someone who knows what they’re doing to navigate the legal system for or with you even if all you want to do is that clean break & you need to file the relevant and correct papers. If you divorce you need to be sure everything is sorted out and finalised, no unfinished business or nasty surprises to come in the future. As it turned out my ex drank himself to death shortly after our divorce was finalised. I can’t begin to tell you the trail of devastation and destruction proceeding his death, I’m just glad that legally I wasn’t responsible for any of it any more. It was a mess I’m glad I didn’t have to handle - thanks to an excellent legal executive.

What is the pettiest complaint you have heard from a home-owners association (HOA)?
In my very first condo building, one of the other residents didn’t like me. Most people also didn’t like her, but she was a lawyer (she told everyone, I knew she was just starting law school), so they deferred to her. She somehow convinced them that they didn’t need to do the 2 things required for association meetings per the laws in my area - send a notice of the meeting date, time, and location to all owners at the address the association has for them by mail, and post a notice of the same in public areas of the building that all owners can access, both at least 21 days in advance - and held an association meeting that specifically excluded me and 2 other owners using this tactic. Keep in mind this was an 8-unit building, so excluding 3 units from representation meant that they didn’t have a 2/3 (67%) vote, required for many things.During that association meeting, they passed 3 rules (two of which were completely bunk because they were amendments to the bylaws which required a paper ballot, mailed, which at least 2/3 of owners agreed to)…(1) Any owner who did not park their car in their designated parking spot at least 3 nights a week forfeited the use of that parking space to the association to assign or use as they saw fit (parking spots were limited common elements, and any amendment to their use constituted a change to the bylaws; I and one other owner did not own cars, but occasionally let friends park in our spaces, and the car owners wanted our spaces for guests of their own). To best accomplish this, “resident use” spaces could only be used by a car the owner notified the association they possessed, with the license plate and VIN and proof of ownership by a resident, at least 2 weeks prior to that car parking in the space. Guests could not use “resident” spaces, nor could owners for rental cars. Yeah;(2) No one could consume alcohol “on the premises” within “plain view” of other residents. This was precipitated by an uber-”christian” owner who kept us “heathens” out of the association meeting. Everyone thought this meant in just the common spaces, but they were WRONG. Banning having a beer in our big yard was bad enough, but this owner meant if she could see you at all. So, I ended up being the first one “rung up” about it. Since I didn’t even know the rule had passed (minutes and vote results were also not mailed as required by law), she had our management company blowing up my phone on a Friday evening about HAVING A BEER ON MY PRIVATE BALCONY. She could see me from the parking lot, that was “in plain view of other residents,” and I needed to stop. BUT WAIT, THERE’S MORE. A neighbor on the first floor was sitting on her couch having a glass of wine when Ms. Perfect walked up to the main door of the building. HER BLINDS WERE OPEN, THAT VIOLATES THE RULE, SHE EITHER HAS TO CLOSE HER BLINDS OR STOP DRINKING *INSIDE* HER OWN HOME. Edit, and I don’t know how I forgot this before: the woman who was hassled for drinking wine in her own living room WAS AN ORDAINED MINISTER. And I don’t mean online just to marry your friends (not necessary in DC…for $30 to the city anyone can perform a wedding, and for $0 beyond the cost of a marriage license you can self-signNow a marriage if both parties are over 21 and sign the proper paperwork)…in an actual, physical, local church, one with a pretty conservative bent (I attended her wedding in her church…they ain’t “progressive” (in a weird stroke of “it’s a small world,” she got engaged to a fairly close coworker of mine just a few months after we both moved into the building…they actually met before either of us moved into the building and didn’t know that we had this weird connection until after they were engaged, when I walked out my door to see my coworker standing in the front yard and said “what the hell are you doing here???”))! And SHE’S being heckled for having a glass of wine with her husband on a Friday evening in her own living room!(3) The building was sold as pet-friendly, with no restrictions. The lawyer neighbor moved in a big, poorly mannered dog just before said association meeting where they excluded several of us. She then proposed to ban all pets, even down to a goldfish in a bowl, except those already in the building. The allowance of pets was actually written into the bylaws (unusual, but it does happen), so, again violating the bylaws except for her own benefit. I was in the process to adopt a dog at that time (appropriate to a small condo and less than 1/3 the size of hers), and I only found out about the bylaw change when I asked the management company for a letter stating dogs were allowed to present to the rescue.Thankfully, all this was resolved pretty quickly when the 3 of us who were excluded from the meeting and a fourth who objected to most of the rule changes paid (payment is necessary unless there’s a good reason for them to do work pro bono) a lawyer friend of mine to write a simple letter asking for proof the meeting and bylaw changes had been properly conducted. The “lawyer” girl sent a letter back saying, without proof, they had, but upon further insistence, the management company stepped in, said that the proof was not there, please don’t sue (since they would be on the hook for not conducting the meeting properly), and asked for permission to re-do the association meeting, with proper notice, in a proper place, and with proper balloting for bylaw changes. We agreed, all measures failed when properly voted upon, and the “lawyer” and “christian” could only get revenge on us through disapproving stares and putting their units up for rent as soon as they could afford something else.
