Sometimes I like what I wrote and think, wow, I had my wits about me that day…Some of it may simply be self-consciousness — we are prone to be hyper-critical of ourselves. (In the same way, we fuss and fret over how we look in ways that make others perplexed and bemused.) Some of it may be that you realize you still have things to learn, and learning is always kinda painful, especially when you are putting your own work out there for others to see and comment on.I will say that the stuff I cringe the most about now is stuff that:I have written when I am tired, or not focusing properly. And I’m not thinking clearly as a result, so what I have written ends up being disorganized and rambling.I’m reading what is a first draft. I’m a reasonably good and articulate writer, and sometimes my first drafts are very good. But often they can be made much better, and sometimes, if I get lazy and don’t even want to read them over, I’ll find mistakes, awkward twists, etc. that I would have caught for myself.
