Hello, my name is John and I'm from the Career and Professional Development Services team here at Arizona State University. Today, we'll be talking about the ASU Mentor Metwork. the ASU mentor network is an incredible online platform that allows you to network with a diverse group of mentors; from ASU alumni and non alumni professionals, to ASU faculty and staff to students both graduate and undergraduate. On the platform you can spark career related conversations between yourself and the larger Sun Devil community, give the opportunity to seek knowledge and advice from experts, explore all career fields and build your professional networks with contacts from around the world. The platform is open to students, alumni faculty, staff, and community professionals. Are you a student about to graduate and looking for tips on getting your foot in the door? Are you an alumni that's looking for a career change? The ASU mentor network is open to you. The best part ,you can do it on your own schedule. Speak with mentors as little or as often as you like. Let's get started. If this is your first time logging in, you'll want to press the join our community button located on the center of the screen. If not press the sign-in button on the top right-hand corner. As you can see there are four different ways to log-in. We recommend that if you have an ASUrite log in to use that. When signing in for the first time you'll be asked a number of questions to help you build your profile. What's your educational background? What are you interested in pursuing? What current and past experiences do you have? Once done your profile will be complete but you can always edit it later. Let's view mine as a quick example as you can see, I've included a brief bio about myself, my work experience, my education, some career goals, I have and even some extracurriculars I have participated in. Feel free to make your bio your own. One of my favorite features about the ASU mentor network is the ability to quickly make a connection. On this tab you'll see that I already have some recommended searches, some by location, some by careers and some by specific topics. At the top you can also filter our mentors by specific locations, majors, industry expertise, or by clicking more and help topics. You can find a list of topics that you may be interested in: we've got everything from balancing career and family to LGBTQ in the workplace to starting a new career. In this example we'll narrow it down by industry expertise. Let's pick aerospace. We'll apply our search and here's the list of mentors who can help us out in this area. You'll be taken to a separate tab with their profile where you can view their own experiences, education, and even areas where the mentor feels comfortable helping. This one looks good. Let's connect with them. You'll press the let's connect button, which will take you to a private message board. Here, you can create your own message to reach out to them or you can select one of our templates to help you get started. Let's use this one. We can then select a specific help topic if we want or ask to schedule a meeting when we're ready. We'll send it , it's that easy! Another great resource on the ASU Mentor Network is the discussion board. Here, you have a chance to ask all of our mentors or mentees any burning questions or topics you'd like advice on. I can write my own here or I can scroll down and answer one of my own if I feel strongly enough about it. In addition to the discussion board another awesome way to connect with your fellow Sun Devils is within different groups located on this tab here. There are a wide variety of groups, whether they focus on specific career areas, social interactions, or even additional ways to get involved. You can click a group, request to join it here, and get started on the specific discussion boards and resources within that group.
