Amazon’s two main competitors, Apple and Barnes & Noble, both claim to have gained a 20+% market share of the eBook market, leaving Amazon with something like 60%. But surveys of self-published authors have shown that Amazon’s share of self-published eBook sales is much higher – more like 80-85%. Whether the true figure is 60% or as high as 85%, Amazon is the biggest market by a long way, and KDP makes the process of self publishing on Kindle relatively easy. Self publish on Kindle: Step 1 – Your Book First you’ll need to sign up for KDP. Then you start by clicking Add a Title. The important options to fill in are: 1. Book name 2. Description (up to 4,000 characters – use it to sell your book to the reader) 3. Book contributors (you as the author) 4. Categories (whichever genres you are writing in) 5. Self publish on Kindle: Step 2 – Cover Photo There are two options, design your own cover or use the template-based Cover Creator. I recommend designing your own cover. The book cover is critical to attracting readers and a template based design is less likely to stand out from the crowd. The picture at the top shows what the cover I designed for Veronika looks like on the Kindle. Designing your own cover doesn’t have to be difficult. At the simplest, it’s just a question of finding a photo, making it the right size and adding the book’s title and your name to it. Find a Cover Photo There are two options: use an original photo or artwork of your own or download one from an image library. The cheapest and easiest option is to use your own photo. Make the Cover Photo the Right Size and Add the Title You’ll need some image editing software to make the cover the right size and to add the title and your name as the author. The free and easy to use image editing programs I recommend are iPiccy and Pixlr. Use the image editor to crop the photo so it is 1,563 x 2,500 pixels, as in the diagram below: The cover should also be in colour, despite the fact the most common Kindles only display black and white. This is because the Kindle Fire and the Kindle app on iPhone, Windows etc. can display colour. Both iPiccy and Pixlr have a variety of free to use fonts. Experiment with a few different ones until you find one you like. Upload the Cover This is simply a matter of clicking Browse for Image… selecting the cover you’ve designed and then clicking Upload Image. Design a cover using the Cover Creator Alternatively, if you just want a simple cover, use the Cover Creator. Step 3 – Rights and Pricing Verify Your Publishing Territories Select Worldwide rights – all territories. Your book will then appear on all the different Amazon sites around the world. Choose Your Royalty I suggest you set your price so that you receive the 70% Royalty – which means a minimum of $2.99 / £1.49 after that it’s up to you. You can set prices worldwide automatically, based on the US price, or customise your prices for different territories. It might be worth setting prices manually to exploit psychological price points like £1.99. Self publish on Kindle: Final Step – Publish! Now just click Save and Publish. That’s it. I think learning is a tricky thing. It has more to do with being able to stay focused and motivated than it has to do with finding the best resources. Staying motivated and focused has to do with being in the right environment and having a good enough reason or end goal that you can cite as a reference every time you want to give up. I taught myself front end development by somehow getting in charge of a student organization website in college. And while looking through lines of gibberish, accidentally breaking the layout of the entire site. I spent the next six hours learning enough CSS to fix it and from there I was hooked. For Ruby on Rails, I didn't really have an end goal in sight, so I knew I had to create (or find) an environment that encouraged and accelerated learning. That's when I found http://www.devbootcamp.com. I applied and went through the 8 week intensive program and just graduated on March 30th. A few things made the program super conducive to learning: There were 20 pre-screened students (chosen from almost 200 candidates). This meant that everyone was super motivated.The program cost $6000. (It's more now for the summer session). This meant that everyone was super invested. (It cost more to host the program, so the mentors and organizers were also super invested.The end of the course featured a career day with 30 companies. If successfully hired, tuition was reimbursed. Again, double motivation.I'm pretty competitive, and fortunately/unfortunately was one of the slower ones in the group. This meant that I worked doubly hard and long. Lastly, the program flipped the traditional learning model. Instead of learning theory first and then practice, we learned by doing first. I made a few awesome apps over the course of the program. Now that the apps are built, I'm curious to know more about the theoretical side. Contrast this with my education in finance. I learned theory for 4 years and left with no desire to pursue practical application. I don't know if a program like Dev Bootcamp (there are other similar ones) is the best for everyone to learn Ruby on Rails, but I do know that if you're trying to learn anything, being in the right place at the right time in your life is a HUGE benefit.

Validating your business idea is crucial before you shell out thousands of dollars into building a product, setting up the business and hiring people. I'll go into brief detail about what we've covered below.The best thing about the time period that we're living in is that technology has enabled entrepreneurs to able to validate their idea at a nominal cost. It has never been cheaper to start an internet business.Here's how I would validate it:1) Set up a landing page. Before you go out and shell out thousands of dollars on hiring a developer, just see if people would even be into the idea by creating a very clear and concise landing page. The landing page should describe what the product is, how it works (3 clear steps) and a sign up button where someone can submit their name to be added to the wait list. Take a look at http://quickmvp.com you can literally set up a landing page in five minutes that contains a clear call to action. You can even test interest levels based on different price points to see if customers would be willing to pay for your service. This is a great tool to help validate your idea and you get great analytics to see how engaged people are with your idea.2) Find out who's interested and bring people towards your landing page to see if people would sign up. If you're getting a lot of signups your steps closer to validating your idea. With Quickvp you could spend $30 on Google ads. I also like this one tool called Http://flutter-app. I use this all the time to test out new features for LawTrades. You can follow accounts that contain your ideal customers very quickly with a few clicks. For instance, if I was opening up a new taco shop, I can use Flutter-app to follow people that follow Chipotle, or Taco bell since my ideal customers are probably following those accounts. Doing this manually would take forever, but you can do this with Flutter very quickly. Make sure your Twitter bio has a link to your landing page so people know what to click on. If a few days go by and your landing page is getting traffic but no signups then tweak the landing page.3) Make sure you're going to Meetup Events and meeting new people face to face to talk to them about the idea! If you're shy, then you MUST come out of your comfort zone. Just find out where your target customers are hanging out and what Meetup Events are they apart of and go there to ask for feedback on your idea. If they like it then have them sign up. Build up the hype! If they sign up, these are going to be the people that your in communication with as your building out your platform, leave an awesome impression so they come back when your platform/service is ready.4) After you have some signups, I would interview them and talk to them about the idea. See what they like about it and why they want to use it. Make sure you also ask them about their feedback about various price points that you have in mind. Interviewing is key because you'll get the feedback you need to build it out. Once you talk to potential users you can fine tune your elevator pitch and really be able to figure out the actual problems that your customers care about.All of these things can help you gauge user interest for what you're doing and I've seen some pretty successful entrepreneurs implement these strategies. If your concepts are really clear, you should not have any problem in walking through CAT QA questions. 72 percentile doesn't say "clear concepts" in any way. I would suggest you start preparing for the long haul - give yourself time and target CAT next year. You can work in the meanwhile, which will only improve your chances of getting in.To start, get familiar with basic theory. Pick up easy questions and, instead of just getting the answer, make sure you understand how you got there. Once you know how, you will start getting to the what without much effort. After that, it's only a matter of practice. For heaven's sake, don't memorize the gazillion formulae most coaching centers will throw at you. You'll never remember them when you most need to, and will be left high and dry on the day. I would strongly advise solving basic 11th and 12th level maths for trigonometry, combinatorics, set theory and so on, before moving on to solved CAT papers before 2008. 2009 onwards, CAT went online and most questions you'll find solved in textbooks are from memory, that too of those who took the test. You can't trust them. In any case, even the before 2008 criterion allows you to choose from a large set of actual CAT papers. You may also refer to the study material provided by TIME, CL or IMS. I find the questions decent.In CAT, a 70% score will get you a percentile of 99.5+ any day, so make sure you know that you can give up 30% of the questions and spend more time on the 70% that you might be able to solve with relative ease. The mocks are slightly tougher than the final test, and a select few people who're very serious about the CAT take those, so your percentile is bound to be lower. You'd do best to progress slowly. Once you really have your concepts clear and cemented in your brain, you'll find it easy to build up speed. In any case, you have 70 mins for 22 questions - remember, you're willing to leave 8-9 questions - which gives you more than 3 mins per question.But these strategies only create decimal point differences. I have never scored under 99.5 in QA in the CAT, primarily because I ate, drank and slept that sort of maths at one point of time. I wouldn't advise that, but you need to work your way up from the basics, if you want to get into the top 10 B-schools in the country.Thanks for the A2A.

Saying "no" unskillfully nearly cost me my life. I was trained to be firm and calm; to repeat "no" as many times as necessary until the boundary was made clear. "No," they said, "is a complete sentence." One of the things we teach, in my job with court-mandated clients, is discipline, and one of the ways we do this is by enforcing punctuality. On a summer afternoon, 15 minutes into a process group, a young stranger threw open the door and walked in. He was short, maybe 5' 1, and pale. His pants hung low on his hips and, looking back, he was too confident for someone wearing a plaid golf cap too big for his head. I asked him to step outside with me - as was company policy - to explain how to attend a make-up activity and send him on his way. I was half standing when he said, "No. I'm staying." He was physically in front of the closed door. "You can come back next week, but I can't allow you to attend today." "You will let me attend today." "No, I can not." After several long minutes of back and forth I finally said. "I can't allow you to attend, but I am not going to physically force you out the door. You will be getting no credit for today. You need to leave." I sat back down with the group. "What's a situation in your life when someone wouldn't take 'no' for an answer?" I asked. After five more minutes of being ignored he left, and the group continued. An hour later the group was over and I was standing outside my office talking to a client. One of the group members came running down the hall, eyes wide. "Diane! Don't go outside! He's waiting for you in the parking lot with a gun!" Long story short, he didn't shoot me or anyone else. By the time the authorities arrived he was gone. If it gets emotional or extreme, I load on validation and send them somewhere for more help. * I know, it's awful.
