Let us set one ground rule first: You can not keep yourself getting distracted while doing what you should be doing no matter how much you try. So logical answer here should be, if you can not defeat something, then TAME it. Just like we humans did with Nature, we couldn't defeat nature, then we just tried to TAME it. Also keep in my, just like nature, it would come victorious once in while, so do not try to for 100% distraction free environment.So now question is how to TAME the distractions?There are plenty of useful things mentioned in the answers here.There is one which I follow rigorously to concentrate hard on important things : Delayed GratificationI came across this term while reading the book “The Road Less Travelled” and it made so much sense and explained so many things.Before I go on explaining this answer this question: What you would rather used to do?1.Watch TV then finish the homework2.OR Finish homework and then watch TVNone of the answers is right but one comes with immense gratification compared to other. Imagine as a kid, you are at home and you are given sometime to watch TV and also you need to finish the homework before going to sleep.Now let us examine scenario one by one:1.Lets say, you decided to watch TV first and then finish the homework.So you start watching TV and you are enjoying it but the thought of finishing your homework in interrupting you intermittently. You try to ignore it s you are enjoying the TV and soon to get rid of this homework pop up, you try to block it and make excuse to your mind that it not a big homework and you can finish it quickly. By doing this you keep downsizing the quantity of homework and also ignoring its complexity. After a while this allows you to make decision of watching TV for some more time as in your mind homework is simple and you can finish it quickly. After some time, either you or some family member pushes you to go for homework and when you start it you realize that you can not finish it in time and you keep kicking yourself for watching TV for long and also worrying about what will happen in school tomorrow.2. Try to help each other and strengthen the bond. You can be passionate in you partner but make sure, you are not dominating them. Tell your partner that sex is not everything that you need and ask her for a relationship with you(just a psychological trick to convince your partner that you care about the relationship) Even if you wanted to break the relationship, just have a word with her about the problems in you, so that you can rectify them and be a better person in your upcoming relationship. SELECT YOUR STUDY PLACE & ARRANGEMENT-Sit in that kind of table chair arrangement and when you sit lock yourself. Promise yourself not to leave chair at any cost until you have completed your goals whatever you have made.(Distraction: Water, Mobile phone, Gaming, fooding, & a strong urge to go out to any roomie) Average guys have that kind of problems.In that case when you sit take a 2 ltr water bottle with you, Put your phone in Silent mode and keep it away with you(strictly), took fooding with you in a transparent container whatever you like but consume it only when you need. (some ppls continue to read instructions, ingredients etc mentioned in packet i.e why suggesting you a transparent box)3. MAKE SMALL GOALS AND BE STUB-BONED:Make small goals and promise yourself to complete it. Don’t directly run for making big goals. “War doesn’t conquered in one night” so make small plans complete them. And when you are able to do this it will make you confident. Slowly slowly make your goals bigger.(Distraction: Time management and knocking out from schedule)Don’t skip a single day from your schedule. Be loyal towards yourself. And like if you make a schedule of studying 2 hours in evening and somehow you’re unable to do that so in that case whenever you get time complete your cycle of 2 hours.4. SOCIAL MEDIA/ENTERTAINTMENT: Strictly limit your social area. Those who love you will love you ever. Feeling of friendship never dies. True friends are always there for you. I’m not telling you to cutoff but limit it. when you have an urge to talk to any friend call him/her. This method reduces your time and energy.(Distraction: Memes, notifications, messages, you-tubing, downloading Instagram etc)On a day at evening before studying and after going to bed 30 minutes spending on social media is sufficient. Friends can limit but career can’t. listen to songs before sleeping. Soulful ones may gives you nice sleep.5. RELATIONSHIP: Biggest factor of Distraction. Commenting upon such part is a waste of time. NOT ALL HEAD HAVE SIMILAR PAIN. So i must only suggest you to limit the time of talking with your Mate. Those couples who are living in same city meet once in a week. Try to convince your partner the purpose of limiting talks. Six years ago I was so depressed I thought I would kill myself. I had nothing going on in my life. And the girl I was dating kept calling me "crazy", would break up with me every day, and refuse to introduce me to her friends. I had three failed businesses that year and the year before. And I was going to go broke with two kids to support. This past year, one of my investments sold for 4000% of my initial investment. A business I started went from $0 in revenues to $12,000,000 in eight months. I published two books and wrote 100s of articles and do 12 podcasts a week. But I don't work hard. I'm about to go get a sandwich. I slept late today. I don't say this because it's so great. I'd like to be a little more effective in my work. It's a practice and not a formula. Every day I practice. Here's what I do. If you don't like it, that's fine. I think each person has to find what works for them. I used to not do these things. And when I didn't do these things, nothing would happen. Life doesn't stand still: it either gets worse or better. Eventually it gets a lot worse. We die. That's the only real truth. I used to work for the news. I know what happens there. The more you read news, the less informed you are, the more time you just wasted. No eating after 6pm (so my liver isn't on overdrive when I am trying to sleep). Plates at 10 inches. (Studies show when you reduce plate size from 15 inches to 10 inches, you eat 30% less calories). Note! If your plate size is 8.5 inches, you eat more - your body is not stupid. It knows you are tricking it. And that's it. The Plate Diet. Or the - not after 6pm Diet - MOVE A little exercise every day is known to have just as much effect on your mood as a full dosage of anti-depressants. - SLEEP In the morning, you have energy. At the end of the day, you don't. Which is why you need sleep. The average person needs eight hours of sleep. For instance, they took some famous orchestra and determined that the professional violinists in the orchestra were sleeping 8.6 hours a day. Don't think that less sleep makes you more productive. Whenever I get only six hours of sleep, I know the day is going to be useless. Preparation is how you win the game, and lack of sleep means you didn't prepare well. - GRATITUDE Worry never solves tomorrow's problems, and only takes energy away from today. Worry and Gratitude can't exist in the mind at the same time. Regret and Gratitude can't exist in the mind at the same time. Anger and Gratitude can't exist in the mind at the same time. Whenever I notice these things happening in my head, I try to replace with gratitude. Now I can continue my day - LAUGHTER The average child laughs 300 times a day. The average adult...five. Dr. Norman Cousins did a series of studies on the benefits of laughter. It improves health, cures disease, improves productivity, and of course, makes you happier. So I try to watch standup comedy when I'm low. Or thing of funny things. Laughter heals the soul. - SURRENDER Too often I would try to control things that were outside of my control. For instance, when a boss is yelling at me, it's his problem. I can't control him. So that's when I try to find a better job rather than put up with abuse. The same in relationships. One of the most important decisions you can make in life is who you spend your time with. It's like falling into an sea of hands and hoping they catch you. When you surround your self with good people, you can surrender that they will catch you. When you are creative, you can surrender to the fact that your ideas will always catch you. When you sleep well and are grateful, you can surrender to the fact that your good health and spiritual attitude, will guide you through the difficult moments. Whenever I'm scared, I surrender. I do my best. I'm honest. I know good things will happen. IDEAS I write down ten ideas every day. The Idea Muscle always needs to be exercised. It atrophies after about two weeks of no use. like any other muscle. People think that ideas are nothing and execution is everything. Execution is just a subset of ideas. You still have to have the ideas in order to execute. And the only way to have good ideas is to exercise the idea muscle. Every day. The result: your life will look completely different in six months. You will be an idea machine. You can be stuck on a highway in the desert with no gas and you will have 100 ideas to save you in no time. The idea machine is magic. FRIENDS The people in your life are like a bonsai tree. How much math is involved with becoming and being an airline pilot?
Ah, here’s one that I keep on hearing over and over when the innocent man and woman on the street find out I’m a mystical airline pilot, stuff of legends and tales: “you must be very good at math”.“Since it’s done above people’s roofs”, I could reply, “all my math is higher math.”Truth is: it’s a myth that pilots have to be aces in maths and that they have nothing but complicated calculations to do while flying. It’s one of those stories that probably originated as an excuse or way out for candidates who were too afraid to admit they failed for other reasons.A typical flight involves for example the following math, for the normal airline pilot:Calculate when you have to wake up so you’ll be at work on time. Unlike for the nine-to-five folks, this is different every day and will even be in different locations all over the world. To make things more challenging [1], people like yours truly leave their phone clock on home time and have to calculate time zone differences from that, to set their alarm. Algebra: 1.Check a flight plan - made by computers by the way, which last I checked did a fine job in calculus and algebra - that somewhere has a fuel figure written on it. That’s the number you have to make a decision on: is it realistic? is it enough? if I need 15 minutes of holding fuel at 5 tons burn per hour, how much extra fuel in kilograms should I slap on extra? Wouldn't that make me too heavy? If so, how much can I take and how much margin is there? Algebra: 2.Arrive at the airplane and realize they still have to start fuelling. And I always think it’s funny when colleagues of mine crunch in some numbers into their calculator and come up with the fact that we need to take 468 kg extra fuel due to a weight increase, after I already quickly came up with “something short of 500 kg” in my head in 1% of the time it took them. You round off to the nearest 100 kg anyway and the fuel gauges only show 20 kg increments.In the courses that lead up to the job, there may be a bit more math involved. I remember we had to calculate core temperatures and pressures in a jet engine in a course. What that was good for, I’ve never known, since I never needed to know the intermediate pressure in stage 4 of the compressor in PSI on any cruise I’ve ever actually been in. But there you go.I can’t remember that I ever needed to do any complicated calculus, statistics, topography, manifolds, proofs, numerical analysis or the likes though. Not in a course and not on the job.If you know enough math as foundation to your physics, you’ll do just fine in pilot training. It’s really not that hard. Luckily.[1] The real reason I do this is because I had an instance where my phone changed time zone while I was vast asleep - for who knows whatever reason - and the alarm I set was then based on a wrong time. I was still on time but swore that for consistency, I’d for ever switch off “automatic time updates” and would just base my alarm at home time zone.
