What is the biggest ruse you have been able to pull off?
I was under cover as a mentally challenged, brain damaged individual. The client believed this private contractor hired to work on high end copy machines, was stealing these electronic boards worth $1,500 USD. This was in the early 90’s and it was challenging to install a surviellance video system for small jobs. So we came in with a plan to install a video camera in the small room where the boards were stored. However the battery had a limited life and we had to change it periodically without his knowing. I was supposed to be part of an equal opportunity program where I worked nights sweeping up and assisting in menial tasks. They felt he wouldn't be deterred by my presence since I wouldn't be smart enough to understand what he was doing. When the opportunity presented I would sweep on into the store room and then change the battery. I played the role to the hilt. He bought my act hook line and sinker. At times I would sit on the fork lift and pretend to be driving and make motor sounds with my lips. While bouncing up and down turning the steering wheel. He would just chuckle and ask if I was having fun. I just smiled back sheepishly. This went on all night and finally it was time to leave. He was concerned about leaving me alone there by myself. I explained I called for my ride from the home and they were on their way.On our way out we made small talk and I pointed to my head and said “brain damage”. He sounded very concerned and asked how it happened. I just said “accident”. Then he asked what I did for work before that. I said “"I was a architect”. He then said “Ohhhhh” as if he had just heard a very sad story. I went on “I did the green building downtown”. He said “"you mean the Emerald Building?” (A signature building in the San Diego Skyline at night). I said “"yeah that’s it”. Then he looked very sad for me shaking his head in concern as if a great mind had been lost. So I know he was buying the ruse all the way and I was having fun doing it. But after all was said and done, we didn't catch him stealing anything. But it was the best ruse I ever came up with in my work.

How are electronic signatures different from digital signatures?
An eSignature emulates a wet signature that’s prompted by the user on a document or something that needs approval. Although it is a visual signature, there’s an audit trial recording from which email was used, IP address, etc.Conversely, a digital signature requires some kind of unique authentication that would allow the signer to sign the document. Usually these unique authenticators can be an ID, a passport, biometrics, etc. This is called a private key and after confirming the signer has a private key, the signer has to use a public key to finish signing the document. I learned this on a sales call since digital signature and eSignature sound similar, but not quite. The way I like thinking of a digital signature is in the context of a secret agent movie: when someone wants to access a secret door, the secret agent uses her fingerprint on the control panel to identify herself then she enters a passcode to gain full access. Kind of like that.Although digital signatures are secure, private keys are a bit cumbersome and doesn’t necessarily mean MORE security. At signNow, we like using 2 factor authentication.

In your opinion, how are electronic signatures better than handwritten “wet” signatures?
First of all, digital signatures offer a much higher security and convenience factor - most digital signature software out there comes with quite a few encryptions to keep your documents secure, there are digital trails that track every change that happens to the document (such as signature added/removed, or any other alteration), quite a few applications also show a progress bar of how the signing process is going, you can assign signatures, add remarks and stamps - all on your mobile device. There is no need to track the person to get their signature - just wait for them to sign. This is incredibly efficient compared to the ‘wet’ signatures. So, the main factors are security, speed, audit trails, process monitoring and the ability to do all these tasks on the go and on multiple devices/platforms.If you’re in the market for such an application that offers all these features and more, I suggest checking out signNow by Kdan. It’s intuitive, user-friendly and besides being highly secure, it’s a good fit for both small and medium-sized companies, individuals, start-ups and all kinds of businesses. While there is plenty of e-signature software out there, signNow stands out due to its well thought-out tools, well designed and user-friendly interface and it’s multi-platform, so there’s no need to compromise on anything.Disclaimer: I am part of Kdan’s team, and my answers might be a bit biased.

How do digital signatures and electronic signatures differ?
Many people think that electronic signatures are the same as digital signatures but that is not the case. In fact, digital signatures are a highly secured way to implement electronic signatures.Digital signatures use a public and private key generation framework, signature algorithm and a verification algorithm to match public and private keys and validate the authenticity of electronic signatures.Ever since the passing of the E-Sign Act in 2000, electronic signatures have acquired as much weight as the traditional wet or ink signature. As a result, electronic signatures have become widely used to conduct business online. This term is quite broad however, and not all electronic signatures constitute as digital signatures, which are guaranteed to fulfill the requirements decreed by the E-Sign Act. These terms include:– The customer’s intent to sign, as well as the consent to sign electronically– The software’s ability to maintain document integrity through unique identifiers– The company’s responsibility to retain all documents for legal purposesWhat does it mean? In a nutshell, every document requiring a digital signature has, in effect, a unique key attached to it. This is done using a public key infrastructure (PKI). Public key is generated & attested by the operator of the PKI called a Certificate Authority, and is held by the document owner, who can then pass on copies to his or her clients. Once the client signs, a unique key (private key) message becomes embedded inside the document. If anyone tries to tamper with the document, the software algorithm will detect it and invalidate the document.Due to increased identity theft in recent years, it has become ever more important for documents to be signed under a watchful eye, whether that be through digital or in-person witnesses. Companies that value your security will enact several layers of protection to ensure that every document is using digital signatures and is legally secure. At signNow, we use industry-standard encryption, time stamps, in-document visibility control, and e-mail authentication to discourage electronic forgery. signNow complies with the E-Sign Act, as well as UETA, HIPAA, and more.
