Today I want to show you how to navigate very briefly, for filing unemployment through the Department of Employment Security, DES website. I'm going to take a few minutes just to navigate some things and I'm going to talk a little bit about some issues that you may encounter while filing for unemployment. So walk, walk with me here for just a minute. OK, so, we're going to log in to the DES website, it's des.nc.gov, and you'll land on this page. And, if you've never had an account, do not come over here to sign in, to create an account. You actually want to apply for unemployment. And it's right below the search bar, and it's just a drop down that you'll click on, and you'll click "apply for unemployment." And for here, you'll see if you scroll about to the middle of the screen, account quick links, create a new account. You're going to click on this, and this is if you're a new user, and you're going to check that I am an individual claimant requiring DES unemployment insurance, and you'll click next. When you get here, you will need your social security number, and you'll need to confirm that. Now I'm not going to put a social security number in there at this time, but once you click on next, you're going to need your email address, and access to your email, because they're going to send you a link, hyperlink in an email that will allow you to create a PIN number. And once you've created that PIN number, then your account has been created. You don't need to log out, you just need to continue on with the process at that point in working through um, applying for the unemployment. Some key things that we have found out in the process that you need to be aware of and that you will need to do is to make sure that you have a current email address, that you know your username and password for that email, that you do have your social security number, you know what that number is or your ID number will be, and that at any time, you may be asked to hold, or there might be a time when you can't move forward in the application process because it may be thinking, the computer may be processing the information. When you go through the application process in the very beginning to create an account, they're going to send you an email asking you to verify this account. And they're going to give you the ability to create a PIN number. And that PIN number will identify your email address to your unemployment claim. And so it's very important that you have that email up and ready to go and then from that point when you click on that link, stay on that link and stay on that website, don't move off of it. It's very important to know that once you start that process, and you've clicked that link and you've verified that PIN number, not to close it out, and not to use the back button if you feel like you're not moving forward, you want to keep everything moving forward. One of the things that we've noticed with a lot of clients is that there's a waiting period. And you'll see the little circle in the middle of the window that keeps rolling and rolling and rolling, and it can roll for upwards to 30 minutes. You have to be patient and wait, because it's processing. If you close that down, or if you use the back button and it drops down to an error message, the only way to get the system to recognize you will be to call in. You have to call their 1-888 number, and that's where the bog starts to come down a little bit in the process because there are a lot of people calling in. And so we've watched this frustrate a lot of people of course because of the waiting period. So, if you've went through the process let's say and you have created the account and it's thinking and you've maybe moved forward in increments on the screen and you're to an hour or an hour and fifteen minutes into it, and you do shut it down, and have to call that 1-888 number, you're just extending your amount of wait time and then once it does establish itself and you can move forward, you still may have another 30 minutes to the process. Like I said earlier, we've really, the max we've kind of witnessed has been about 2 hours, I think the norm is about an hour, an hour and 15 minutes for somebody to get through the process. Inside when you do start your claim process, and you've gotten through it to the very end, you will be required to have a weekly claims, meaning that you need to maintain that username and password and that PIN number, and you're going to weekly, make a claim, and each time, your claim is going to be based on the COVID-19 crisis, and you're always going to answer "Yes, I'm looking for work". That's key to remember. So remember that each claim you do each week, until the time your employment starts back with your business, you always want to answer "YES" that you're looking for work, and it's due to the COVID-19. This will allow you to make that claim. That's really important to know because that initiates that check each week that you will get. One other thing to note is that um, after this process has initiated, it'll take up to 10 days to process before you receive your first check. And then, each week you'll receive a check based on your claim. Some other things that we are aware of, on the application itself, to note. It's going to ask you where you are applying to, the application to, what NC Works center. You'll need to click Transylvania County. We are working with DWS, the Department of Workforce Solutions to correct this, but rightnow the Henderson county NC Works site is not located on that application, you must choose NC Works Transylvania County. And then it will allow you to move forward. We know that that's um, people have had a lot of questions about that process. So it's a little bit of a slow process, it is stepped, it does step up over time, but it is something that you can get through. Just want you to know that here at Blue Ridge Community College, you're our family. More than likely you have had training here, you've taken a course here, whether it be learning how to dance to learning how to run a CNC machine. You may have even taken an associate degree or certificate or diploma for um, transfer or for a trade of some type. We want to make sure that you're taken care of.
