hey what's going on thanks for tuning in to my channel um if you've watched one of the last few videos then you know that i'm working on a course like an introduction to business course for contractors and so i'm going through my outline for that course and i'm doing videos on each section just to kind of warm up and brainstorm a little bit about what i'm going to talk about so if you're new to business or if you're in a place maybe you've been in business for 20 years but you're in a place where you're struggling to get enough customers some of these things are going to help you out in the long run um and today's topic is marketing that's built into your business so most of my videos are about like online marketing or internet marketing and that's why a lot of people find my content or they come to my business wanting help um but there's a certain amount of marketing that should happen along with everything else in your business and it doesn't happen online it happens in the real world it happens with you with your employees and so i'm just gonna quickly go through these things um at the core of it especially in the beginning of your business you have to be a promoter you have to promote yourself your services your team you know whatever whoever's doing the work or whoever your customers are you have to promote to them and so the number one thing you can do is just make sure that everybody you deal with is having a good experience it doesn't only mean your customers it can mean your vendors just someone that you meet walking out of the store it doesn't matter like everybody that you come in contact with make sure they have a good experience go out of your way to make that happen and that will generally just make people like you and that's a really good thing when you're trying to get customers if people like you they're gonna try to help you they're gonna trust you if they need something that you can provide they're going to trust you with that if they know someone that needs what you provide they're going to trust you enough to recommend you so that's a huge thing give everybody a good experience when dealing with you like everybody you possibly can the second thing is to make sure everybody knows what you do so business cards is a good way to do this wearing like a shirt where with your logo on it that's a really good way making sure all of your friends and family know what you're up to um i mean if if someone doesn't know what you do then how could they possibly ever hire you to do it right so you know make sure everyone has a good experience but also make sure they know what you have to offer super important make sure everyone knows don't be afraid to let people know what you have to offer if you're afraid of that then then you're it's going to hold you back big time and you just really don't want something that petty to hold you back let everybody know i already mentioned it a little bit but friends and family if if this is a new venture for you you should be reaching out to everyone you know friends family anyone in your network and just letting them know hey this is what i'm doing now do you need anything like this do you know anyone that needs anything like this you need to be promoting and the quickest way to get customers without leaving your house is getting on the phone calling everyone you know and just telling them what you do and asking for referrals it's okay to ask for referrals i mentioned business cards but i'll say it again like you ought to have business cards you ought to be handing those things out to everybody um friends family your neighbors every customer you have should have a little stack your business cards be handing those things out like crazy um you know you pack a business like 500 business cards cost like 15 bucks or something if one of those business cards brings you a job worth a couple grand then that's just a huge return on your investment right should get in the habit of having business cards just handing them out every opportunity you get be creative stick them on the bulletin board at your gym staple one to your invoices like do whatever you need to do but just get the word out another one is road signs the same place you get business cards usually you can get some signs to put out in the yard by the road if you're especially if you're working on a project for like a month stick a road sign out there show the neighbors who's working on this house but make sure that your crew is being clean not making a scene not leaving garbage all over the place not standing out in a circle drinking beers and playing dice like whatever make sure that you're everyone's representing your company and making a good appearance but put your sign out there so people know that you're there truck signs go right along with that your vehicle or your vehicles should have your logo on it should have your phone number and should say what services you do the worst thing is when i see someone with a big logo on their car and a phone number but it doesn't say what they do so how the heck is anybody supposed to call them for their services when they've got some obscure name and logo and it's just not clear what they do first and foremost people need to be aware of what you do before they can ever think about hiring you these are all fundamental things that you should be doing all the time but if you need jobs right away and you've already exhausted your network go door to door like it's really hard to go knock on 100 doors and not find a customer um a friend of mine did a video about this he cleans gutters for a living i think his channel is called from the gutter and he went door to door and i think his goal was his goal to make 500 bucks in a day cleaning gutters he had no tools no phone no nothing he went door to door in 10 hours i think he made a 600 bucks so go door-to-door hand out business cards make sure everybody knows what you do it'll be really difficult like if you're making a good impression you know if you're being nice if you're giving them a good experience it'd be really hard for you to not find a customer and it's also really really good practice because most contractors are not that good at sales um they just don't have any experience doing it and it takes shitloads of sales calls or sales conversations or you know sale-oriented conversations to get good at it and so going door-to-door forces you to have the same conversation over and over again and you end up getting really really good at saying what you mean to say in just a few words and being able to focus more of your attention on being friendly and paying attention to whoever you're talking to and you just become good at speaking and and good at conversation and that goes a really really long ways in your success you know let's just say that you're not very good at sales and so you lose one out of every four deals just because you're not coming across the right way you go door to door for a week and you talk to 700 people that's probably not going to happen to you and that might mean the difference with an additional 25 percent of customers so this stuff really adds up and it's easy to avoid because you know i get it i was a carpenter for most of my life like i didn't want to talk to anybody like i just wanted to do my work and for people to leave me alone but when it comes to business and sales you have to get over that and you have to just put yourself out there and learn how to get really good at talking to people if you can't go door to door you can do cold calling it's the same principle it's a little difficult these days because there's so many spam calls going on right now a lot of people just don't even answer the phone so if you're going to cold call the first thing you say you should just be very clear about who you are and why you're calling it's like hey i'm not a spammer i promise this is my name this is what i do i'm i'm a new business and i'm just really trying to get started off on the right foot so i'm calling the p you know all the businesses in your neighborhood or whatever like be clear about what you're doing and let them know like hey i'm a real person this is what i'm trying to do i'm not just one of a thousand telemarketers in a giant office building calling you from india trying to sell you something so cold calling can work once you have the customers another thing you can do is help them spread the word give them a stack of business cards make them super super happy always ask them to leave a review preferably on your google listing but wherever they can leave it i like google the best because it's free and when somebody types something into google like ninety percent of people do your google maps listing is what shows up so having reviews on that is good but help your customers spread the word if you had really good client and you finished their project a month ago call them out of the blue and say hey was just thinking about you how are you how's everything going was there everything still good by the way do you know anybody that needs my services totally okay to do that on occasion you'll be surprised like if you need a couple jobs to fill up some some of your schedule calling 20 past clients and asking them that we'll usually fill it up i just mentioned it but always ask for feedback and reviews you want reviews but you also want feedback if someone had a bad time for any reason you want to know about it and fix it so it doesn't happen again the very first thing i said was give a good customer experience that's paramount if you can't do that everything else will fall apart or be 10 times harder so ask them for feedback hey how could we have done better was there any part of this process that you didn't feel excellent about pull it out of them find every single way that you and your company and your team can improve and you do that for 10 years and you'll be like most successful business in the area um i just mentioned this but it's worth repeating find reasons to stay in touch with your customers just call them out of the blue hey how are you was just thinking about you how is the entertainment center that we installed no cracking you know whatever just ask them about about it um ask them questions that are going to get them to say nice things about you and then ask them for referrals totally cool to do um and the last thing you know in the long run if you can find services where you can get like a subscription if you can get like a maintenance contract with someone where they pay you every single year or every month to do a set amount of work those kinds of customers can be really valuable because you know you've got five or ten customers that pay you on a regular basis that can sometimes cover like all of your overhead and so that all the additional projects you sell is all profit and if you're on this boom and bust cycle that a lot of guys are um it could really help you to have something regular so you might have to get creative it's not super common in the construction space to have a subscription um but there are ways to find those things and just you know you can just ask your customers like hey you know what do you need in six months from now what do you need on a regular basis um if you can find something like that it would be really cool so that's all i got for you um you do all these things like i guarantee you you'll never have a shortage of customers and all the other marketing that you do will be 10 times easier because when you come from a place of desperation all this stuff is much harder to get to work so do all these things take this action constantly come from a place of abundance and people are going to trip over themselves trying to work with you if you have any questions or you think i missed something important put in the comment section and thanks for watching
