how do you network when you're at an event now this is for nonprofessional events meaning not La tip not BNI not your chamber of commerce but any other event a Meetup a conference that you're attending maybe it's an industry specific type event that you want to go to I want to share with you guys my tips and tricks to be wildly successful when you're actually there doing the networking because a lot of you guys are going out and you're doing the right things which is amazing you guys are going and finding industry specific events and then you don't quite know how to get to that next level get that person to book a meeting to hang out with you or heck even talk to you while you are there so I got the handy dandy whiteboard behind me and we're going to be diving quite aggressively into this topic and I'm going to share with you guys a kind of sample show floor of where you can bump into the best people to speak to and who could be your Target customer my name is Harrison Baron from growth generators. we help msps grow whether that's sales training marketing or even some business operations you guys have been fortunate enough to bring us into many of your companies to help you guys in a ton of different ways and we truly truly appreciate that down in the video description or if you're listening to the podcast which I'm going to do my best to walk you through verbally on everything that's going to be going on down in the description whether it's a video or podcast there are a ton of super helpful links down there there I would highly recommend going and checking that out now let's get into the meat and potatoes of this video you're at a conference you've done all of the right things you drove there you got your business cards you're super ready to go talk to maybe your dream Prospect but you aren't sure exactly how to do it or you're going up to people and introducing yourself hopefully with a nice smile and then you're like it doesn't feel natural it feels a little weird it feels a little pressurized and that is what we are going to really break down today is how to find that and how to position yourself so that way people want to talk to you now a lot of what I'm going to be talking to you about today I have done myself but also there are tons of Statistics I'd have to go find them and I quite honestly am not going to go look them up in the middle of this video but there's a ton of social proof for what I am saying and if you follow a lot of kind of industry figures especially public speakers or Network you'll eventually hear these types of ideas as well so let's break out the actual whiteboard you're going to a networking event and the first thing that you're going to see is the entrance and I'm just going to write a Big E here because it's super important I'm going to just draw a door for those of you that have Built Homes before it's it's something similar to that a little door where you walk in and the door is really important because that's going to be the entry point and people typically go obviously into the building the first thing that you're going to see most of the time is a registration desk right so I'm just going to write reg and you're going to go through you're going to stop by that registration desk this is the worst possible place to talk to people because think about it right as you go in right you've parked your car here I'm going to do an absolutely atrocious drawing of a vehicle here it could be a cybertruck I don't know no hate on that at all but you park your car you walk in guess what you're probably a little flustered just like everybody else it's normal you're going into an environment that is new it's an event unless you're a veteran which hey if you're a veteran of this kind of stuff you're probably not watching this video you you are still figuring it out I was there I still am there when I go to a new event I'm like where do I go first place you got to go to registration you got to get checked in it is most important thing you have to know what's going on and that's how they're going to email the heck out of you for the rest of your life that's important now after registration you are going to go into the actual main event here and I'm just going to draw in some doors here I hope that this is accurate I've never actually done this before as far as doors we're that's that's a bad drawing here we're just going to say that's an opening and that's where you are actually going to filter in now the show floor is going to be packed with with stuff I mean mobbed that's the whole point of being there is you are going to be going through and I'm actually going to change up the color here to maybe a little blue to show you guys the floor that you're going to be going down typically there's aisles there's booths on both of those aisles all the way down and that's good they want you to go through this right and each one of these squares is a booth and those booths are probably trying to sell you something educate you in some way whatever it might be now the typical route that you have to take is kind of three different ones you can go around the outside you can go around the middle and you can go around the other outside however it is set up but they want you to ultimately filter through to the back now at the back of the room they put the gold usually now the gold is some kind of bar/ drink setup and I say bar doesn't have to have Al in it it could be coffee in the morning it could be snacks it could be fruits whatever it may be but the point is they put it all the way in the front to get you to go to the back of this showroom believe it or not I've already showed you the secret of where you need to position yourself the problem is most people go in they walk through they see this big entrance and they they just start hanging out around here they crowd the door think of it like a defensive line in football or rugby if you're into that kind of thing you got to get through that guess what you don't want to do guess the mindset that you're already in right we talked about you get out of the car you go to registration you're kind of overwhelmed because it's new and then you got to walk through the door with a bunch of people it's like piranhas in the water they're trying to talk to you and guess what you're not in the mental state of doing talking to to people and if you are one of these piranhas in here waiting for people to come in I promise you people are not going to want to talk to you because like we just said they're flustered they parked their car they went to registration they got to get themselves situated you can kind of see it they're all kind of cooped up a little bit they're all like high pressure they haven't seen anything yet they haven't gone through the Shelf floor yet they it's just they got to adapt to their environment they have to settle in and this is where most people make the mistake is right here upon walking in they think people are going to register and then they're going to want to talk to you that's wrong it's completely completely wrong now these booths have all paid to be here right but what people have don't realize is the secret sauce to networking is already in this image it's actually at the bottom of the image when you go to that bar I'm going to go White wipe some of these boots away here just so you guys don't have to see it all but I'm going to share with you guys the best part now could be a coffee bar cocktail bar whatever it might be people are going to go to this bar typically there might be some cups over here maybe there's some a big n or some kind of uh heating tray for coffee or snacks whatever it might be the best place to hang out is just outside of the bar because think about it you walk into a place you're overwhelmed you've probably already been attacked by the people that don't or haven't watched this video they don't know how to network and now you have to go through and talk to a bunch of people at these booths that paid a lot of money to be there who are trying to sell you products it's a bit overwhelming the only thing you probably want is a fresh cup of coffee especially if it's in the morning there's a lot that's happening right in this image just as time is going by the best place to to be is just outside of the bar whatever that bar is serving snacks drinks whatever it might be people can finally get themselves situated they could have that first cup maybe that's their first cup of coffee it's super early in the morning boom now they get to have their first cup of coffee at the bar and there's no pressure that they feel they've gotten their drink they feel situated they've gone through the trials and tribulations of talking to all of the vendors that are normally scattered all throughout here and I'm just going to just draw back a couple of these right they've already talked to everybody they don't want to talk to anybody anymore they want to reset themselves they want to feel like a human and maybe they're going to loop back through some of these boots that they might have found interesting but what people like to do is they like to have something in their hands in this case I have an expo marker but people want to have something in their hands whether that's a cup of coffee and they want to see everything they want to take a load off they want to feel like they belong in that environment and the best place to hang out is just a couple feet away from this people are going to get their coffee they're going to Finly feel situated and then they're going to say now I'm here now I can go do all the things that I want to do whatever that might actually be and that is the perfect place for you to have a cup of coffee in your hands and just looking around smiling taking it all in understanding what's going on if you truly want to make great connections believe it or not the best place to hang out is just outside of the bar and this goes with any kind of event that probably has servings of whatever it might be hanging usually out a couple feet away from the bar is the best place to be and once again that bar does not have to have alcohol in it it could have coffee could have juice could have regular drinks water depending on the time of the day we'll probably determine what that bar is actually serving but the best place to hang out just a couple feet away open yourself up when you're talking to people don't be closed off and crossing your arms and looking around and probably looking at the ground you have to be open and present you want to smile you want to make eye contact with people and you want to be willing and able to talk these conversations that happen just outside of here are going to be the ones that you get to follow follow up with after the convention and aren't just going to be blown off because guess what there's no pressure they're open to talking to you they've probably gone through once again that piranha infesta water they've talked to a bunch of Booth people they're finally in a spot where they feel comfortable and maybe you could share hey I found this booth really exciting I found this booth really really interesting and your Target customers are doing the exact same thing that I just talked about especially if you're there to go meet them they're getting out of the car they're a little flustered they got to register they want to be able to see everything that's going on but at the end of the day they want to feel like they are present in the moment and they're not going to do that till they've made their way all the way through the show and they end up here now if you're thinking about walking through the whole show and bumping into people that are at different booths while this may or may not be a good idea there's a couple things to consider the people that are floating around at booths are there for two reasons one they are there because their friends are there and they're going to hang out with their friends because maybe it's been some time and their friend is working that Booth normal probably not the best part best place to talk to somebody two if they're hanging out at the booth they are there to learn they are there at that moment learning they are not looking to have conversations with people that aren't in the same space as they are if this booth is talking about let's just say XYZ and that person's there listening watching the presentation and you come up and talk to that person you have now disrupted that person from the demo from whatever they are actually learning open yourself up and try different things but the worst place to hang out I'm actually going to draw it out in red because I think it's that important the absolute worst place to hang out is BU registration this is all bad area I'm going to just X through it all because you should not be hanging out in here it does not work you were I've made this mistake I used to hang out up here and thinking was a good idea the only time I ever actually got anything out of it was never I just saw my friends and then I would walk in with an actual friend now if you're meeting somebody totally different story you want to meet somebody before you go through the show that's fine but the appropriate and best way to do it is filter all the way through the show get yourself a fresh cup of coffee and talk to people right after they get their fresh drink whatever that is snack whatever it may be that is the time because now they've done through they've gone through through everything they feel good they feel like they belong they can they've situated themselves and now they're ready to talk to people be open and approachable and I promise you you're going to have tremendous tremendous success when it comes to this in the next video I'm going to be talking about how to actually do professional networking and how to get the most out of it but this is a conference type environment you're going through whatever it may be as you're going and looking for your Target customer that is the way to go kill it my name is Harrison bar from growth Des generation .c I appreciate the heck out of you guys if you've made it this far hit that like button that subscribe button and notification Bell and I'll see you guys on the next video bye
