hi this is Ian from CAD space in Sydney I'd like to show you how to customize a bill of materials in a drawing of a simple assembly here I have an assembly and I've already added a view into a drawing so from the tables option we can add better materials and using the SolidWorks default table template I'm just going to add in a basic filler materials table here we can see that we've got some columns with with heading this part number description the description column is empty and the part number column has some names which are actually the file names are the individual components so you want to make some changes to this we want to obviously populate the description column if I double click the heading ardently the bar above the heading on that table we'll see that it's set to custom property and description in fact it's a default entry and when we hit the drop-down box will see that description isn't in the list so we need to add our own description for these parts so it'll display in the table we do that from the individual component if we expand the drawing view we'll see a list of all of the parts that are being used in this assembly drawing and if I open to edit the bracket for example then look at the custom properties information we'll say that there aren't any custom properly set yet in this document so under the property's heading property column using the drop-down box I can add in the here a description heading it's always he text and we can type in a description in here so I'm just going to call this bracket and we'll see that the evaluated value is exactly what we typed at the same time I'm also going to add in our custom property for material simply by selecting it from the list this time rather than typing a value I want to link the material to the material I've specified in the part so we select the material properly from the list and we can see that although there is a value in the final column it says material not specified if I click OK and go back to our feature manager you'll see that the material is in fact not specified so if I right click and fix that up I'm going to change the material to three or four stainless and go back to my custom properties and we'll see now that the material has been updated to reflect the material that arms you selected finally I'm going to type or select another property which is the part number and this time I'll just type another value SW double O one and okay so here we've set three custom properties using the file properties tab at the at the top of the display if I go back now sorry if I just save this document it'll take me straight back to my drawing and you'll see that the description column now has a new entry it says bracket but my part number hasn't been updated to reflect the new part number double click in the top bar I can change this from cut from part number to custom property which will bring through the data from our individual part so now I can select part number from the list let's fixed up the part number and the description lastly we need to add in an extra column to show the custom material so right clicking on the column description I can insert column to the right and here again it's giving me the option of selecting custom property and that property name will be material so that adds in the material especially if I didn't that part now I can carry on doing that for the other components in my assembly so if I do the same thing for the the yoke right click and open the part document go to my file properties and again create these new properties so first of all description type in a value yo Kumail secondly we'll create the link to the material and this time it's a system parameter so we'll just select that from the list again not specified and also part number this time we will type it a value in sw2 and okay while we're here we'll update the material to be 6 or 6/1 alloy close and say the document takes us back to our drawing and here our part number and description have been updated so you can carry on updating the remaining components and complete the bill of materials so that hopefully helps you to customize your bill of materials
