I want you to imagine what a billion dollar non-profit looks like well you were probably born in one hey friends Dr Abdul I'll say it here today we're talking about the non-profit Healthcare industrial complex but first make sure to like subscribe hit the little bell so you never miss our content and tell your friends because Word of Mouth even in the internet era still matters I want you to think about the name of the hospital you were born in not today but when you were born there probably had some religious name in it some Catholic Hospital or Lutheran Hospital or Presbyterian hospital or Jewish Hospital now I want you to think about the name of the hospital you were born in today chances are that name is different than it was when you were born there and that my friends is a process called consolidation so I was born in a hospital called Crittenton Hospital in Rochester Hills Michigan today it's called Ascension Rochester Hills and that's because that hospital was bought by the Ascension Healthcare System now Ascension started out as a religious-based non-profit like so many of the hospitals in our country but today Ascension is a gigantic multi-state Health System but here's the funny thing about it Ascension remains a non-profit Health Care System despite the fact that they've been buying and selling hospitals with abandon and that their CEO makes millions of dollars a year I don't know what comes to your mind when you think about non-profit but it's not that but more recently the New York Times reported a story about a non-profit Hospital chain operating in Minnesota and Wisconsin that is literally denying Health Care from people if they have too much medical debt forty five hundred dollars in medical debt gets your appointment canceled that is despite the fact that this non-profit is worth literally billions of dollars right now it would be a great time to hear a message from our sponsor the Marguerite Casey Foundation the national youth-led movement fighting back against the assault on black studies libraries and the freedom to learn is gaining momentum in an effort to support the movement Marguerite Casey Foundation is thrilled to help get the newly released book our history has always been Contraband in defense of black studies out as widely as possible so it can serve as a resource to all working to ensure the accurate teaching of black history in the United States co-edited by Colin Kaepernick Dr Robin DG Kelly and Dr kyani Yamada Taylor our history has always been Contraband brings together more than 50 canonical texts and authors in Black studies along with six new essays get your free ebook today at caseygrants.org free book that's c-a-s-e-y-g-r-a-n-t-s dot org backslash free book so when I think about a nonprofit I think about this like Little Engine That Could an organization dedicated to a cause working in a local community all of its workers are taking a pay cut to do the right thing in life so that they can go to sleep knowing that they've helped yeah that's not what America's Health Care Systems are but the fact that they retain their non-profit status that is an anachronism based in the old school system of healthcare because I want to explain something about the way Healthcare used to work in the past in America if there was a hospital it usually was one of two types either it was a public Hospital public hospitals yes we used to do that in America government health care what yes that is an American idea used to have General hospitals that were publicly run and if they weren't government-operated hospitals they usually were run by non-profits hence all the religious names religious organizations would come together they would raise money at the church they would invest in a building they would hire doctors and they would operate a hospital but today our Health Care system is consolidating the reason chances are that the name of your hospital has changed is because that hospital while it was an independent Hospital likely when you were born there in the 60s 70s 80s or even 90s today it is probably one small Hospital operated by a huge Consolidated Mega nonprofit whose CEO makes millions and millions of dollars whose salary is dependent on how much money that non-profit makes which by the way should force you to think what kind of non-profit changes the CEO salary based on how much money it makes that sounds very for-profit to me and even if it's not for-profit it's still motivated by profit if the leaders of an organization care a lot about the revenues of that organization they are basically operating for profit even if there aren't shareholders of that organization but that's how so much of our health care System operates today now when we talk about non-profit status this has really nothing to do with anything except for taxes what's that quote there are only two things that are certain in life death and taxes well at hospitals death is usually certain but not taxes in fact most of them get away because they are non-profits without having to pay taxes they're subsidized to the tune of billions and billions of dollars all those residents the young trainee Physicians who run around the hospital doing all this gut work you know who pays their salary Medicare meaning you and I pay their salaries in mostly non-profit hospitals yeah it's a pretty crazy thing in this case Alina Healthcare that hospital I was telling you about they've just gone ahead and said you know what we basically operate like a for-profit entity anyway so we might as well just go the rest of the way rather than providing care for Indigent people who have medical arrearages or even kids whose family owe money for their health care well if they can't pay we turn them away just like any company would but then doesn't that violate the non-profit status thing doesn't that violate the entire purpose for us subsidizing these hospitals existence that they provide a critical public good in the community what kind of public good is that when they're denying the people who need their care the most this is the system of healthcare we've assented to I want to step back for a second for-profit non-profit to be honest I want you to think about the absurdity at the heart of this which is that in this country we treat the bodies of sick people like a commodity something to profiteer off of kind of nuts but this is the issue with this non-profit organization is saying out loud is what the entire Health Care System says implicitly if you cannot make a dollar off of a sick person's body then that person does not deserve Health Care again they're saying that if you cannot make a dollar off of a sick person's body that that person does not deserve Health Care our whole system works that way that's the underlying logic of every part of healthcare health insurance well you have to be employed and your employer has to pay for your health insurance you don't just get that because you're a resident or citizen of the United States of America like you would in almost every High income country in the world no instead someone has to pay for your health care access and not only that someone your employer has to pay for you have to pay for it in the form of a premium every single two weeks or month and then beyond that when you actually get sick you've got a deductible you have to pay again money out of your pocket so that you can get the care you already thought you paid for that's just the insurance side on the healthcare side you've got a whole bunch of opaque costs that they've negotiated with your health insurer so that some money exchanges hands between your health insurer and your health care provider when you get sick you being the product the commodity your sick body being traded between these two very large non-profit institutions that money that's transferred those billions of dollars well some large proportion of them go into the pockets of healthcare CEOs back in 2021 with the pandemic raging the CEOs of the top 300 healthcare companies in America you know how much they made they made a collective 4.5 billion dollars I want you to think about that every single one of those dollars was a dollar spent by some person out there in America in order to get health care they thought they were paying for health care but instead 4.5 billion of those dollars wound up in 300 Pockets just 300 pockets that's what the logic of our Health Care system does it takes money from lower income people who get sick and puts it in the pockets of very very very wealthy people many of whom are operating non-profit organizations what Alina is doing is obviously immoral but it's not just them it's this entire system that we've ascended to in this country that tells us that rather than providing every single person access to health care because well they deserve it because they're a human being instead we've created a system by which the bodies of sick people become a commodity traded between non-profits so that their CEOs can make huge amounts of money the choice that we have in front of us well it's ours we don't actually have to live in this system we could change it if we wanted to don't get me wrong it's really really hard to do because well a lot of that money that those CEOs make a lot of that money that those non-profit Health insurers make you know what they do with it they spend it to Lobby government to make sure that the grift will not end over the last 20 years the health insurance industry spent 2.8 billion dollars making them the second largest lobbying sector in the entire country and then coming in at number eight is the hospitals the non-profit hospitals who spent over a billion dollars lobbying our government to make sure nothing changes let me just come full Circle for you non-profit hospitals and insurance companies they spend the money that they didn't pay in taxes making sure that we the taxpayers don't spend any less than we're already paying for an over-inflated Health Care System they want to continue to monetize our bodies and not have to pay any taxes on it while we continue to watch as our health care costs spiral out of control every single year and they'll tell you that that's capitalism friends that's not capitalism that's just a grift
