the industrial relations bill passed the lower house this week in an event to get wages moving but many people have spoken about this bill being too rushed including from the small business industry and joining me live is founder of small business women Australia Amanda Rose good afternoon Amanda how are you I'm well how are you good thank you very much so it's a complex Bill tell us a bit about it and why many people believe that it's been rushed well because it has been so essentially the small business community in particular female-led small businesses most of them had no idea this was happening so there was no consultation done for the female-led small business and that is key because they're very unique in how they run their businesses and obviously a majority of them are small and have a tight profit margin so when communicating to my community about it most of them are like I didn't know this was happening what does it mean and those who were aware of it said hang on a minute I've got a lot of questions they need to be answered before I know I can function in my small business moving forward so what about the part of the bill which includes the 15 employee Mark that the government has proposed talk us through that do you agree with that number being 15. no mainly because don't forget that you could have a business with lots of casual employees which could you know in excess be 30 if you're running a cafe or a restaurant and we need to be very aware that a lot of small businesses and those in retail and hospitality and so forth are often run by women and they hire women and that you know that could have 30 on the roster and so forth but if they all of a sudden have an increase in their wages it's not that the women don't want to pay their staff even more because a lot of small business women actually do pay above award and they give great benefits because they're women themselves and they understand it's effective because of the small profit margin their business is just not liable they could claim bankruptcy they could just shut their doors and then all those women that were working for them and now unemployed so we need to be very careful about that and also don't forget those who are growing in their business they might say well I won't have any more employees I'm just going to contract people because I don't want to be at risk of what would happen if I increase past 15. so what would you like to see in this bill then well I'd actually I actually like to go back in time genuine consultation process and focus groups and forums to say well what does your business look like and even now reach out and say well hang on a minute What scenario would this look like for this type of small business What scenario would it look like for this type of small business you need to understand how unique they are and how different they are and a lot of women that run small businesses they go out of their way to make sure that their employers get that flexibility they have that above and beyond help with have got children they need to manage or a family so they do a lot so you need to communicate it exactly what's happening but listen to them and rushing something for me anything that is rushed is a red flag if you're trying to push something through that is going to literally control the business community in particular small business women and that is a red flag so we need to put a stop to everything right now and go and communicate to the community and say what is it that you would like to see how can we work together instead of this is what's happened too bad are you seeing any similarities Amanda with the coercive control law bills that were implemented just a week or so ago many people from all different organizations were saying that that bill was being too rushed yes the thing is usually very concerning right in life in general especially with legislation now often you know there is there are positives to everything for example with the ir1 it's essentially we want people to be paid what they deserve I agree with that same with coercive control we want to make sure that people are being coerced but it's the lack of communication to the actual people that are being involved in association so instead of doing something because it sounds great and you're ticking a box and everyone's going to think aren't you wonderful just remember short-term gain long-term pain we need to take our time with these things and make sure everyone is communicated with the consultation process is done properly to ensure that it actually will work whatever it is that they do all right well we appreciate your time and expertise as always great to see you Amanda founder of small business women Australia talk to you again soon thank you
