Medical invoice generator for Product Management
Last year, I decided to exit management consulting and pivot into product. During my transition, I realized the PM role is quite variable across companies. So today I wanted to share what a day in my life looks like as a PM at a health tech company, while explaining some Agile concepts along the way. I'm currently back home visiting family in Southern California and decided to work from the cafe because...sometimes I just don't want my mom yelling at me in the background when I'm working from my parents’ place. The cafe is a nice alternative to co-working spaces like WeWork because there's no membership fee to enter. However, it is smaller and does get more crowded. Typically I start my mornings by reviewing what I like to informally call my hub. This is basically a conference page that stores all my notes, bookmarks, and action items. For those who may not know, Confluence is a collaboration tool made by Atlassian. If I had the choice, I would probably prefer to take notes in Notion, but nonetheless I find Confluence to work well because of its integration capabilities with other products that I use like JIRA and Lucidchart. As a PM, I have to context switch a lot between the various projects I'm a part of, so it has been really helpful to easily reference my hub to remind myself of the most up to date status for each project. Today I have a pretty light meeting day and I'm kicking off my first meeting with a user research call to get general feedback about our product, which is really important for us to make informed product decisions. I find user research calls to be pretty enjoyable since you get to talk to users and it allows for experimenting with effective questioning techniques. We follow the Mom Test, which you may already know about, but it's basically the concept of how your mom would most likely be biased and giving you feedback just because she loves you. ...or maybe she doesn't and you'd be okay...jk xD But instead of directly asking your mom if she likes an app that you've made, you ask her about things like her current app usage or how, when, and why she uses her device. So it's during these calls that I get to play around with how to unveil the truth simply by asking the right questions, which, you know, comes in handy outside of work too ;) Shortly after my user research call, I have standup. As an Agile organization, my team has a 15 minute daily stand up where the PMs, product designers, and engineers meet to keep each other up to date about what people worked on yesterday, what they're working on today, and if there's any blockers, which is basically anything that is preventing you from getting your work done. And this helps to make sure that we're staying on track. Interestingly, the meeting is called Stand-Up to encourage people to stand and therefore keep the meeting short due to the discomfort of prolonged standing. But let's be real... I'm usually sitting my ass down during this meeting. Next, I’m helping our quality assurance team with QA testing. This means that we test the features we're about to release on both iOS and Android devices and try to catch and fix any bugs before we release to our users. While not all PMs do QA testing, I enjoy it because PMs arguably have the deepest knowledge of the product, so it's rather fitting for the PM to help ensure the quality of the product. So normally, if I have a really busy day at work, I'll try to eat while I work, but today I have a little bit more of a chill day, so I'm going to take a break and eat the bagel that my mom made me for breakfast, especially because I got LASIK about a year and a half ago, it's really important that I'm mindful of my screen time and try to take breaks my screen as much as possible, just so the money that I spent on LASIK doesn't go to waste. My next meeting today is refinement, and this is the meeting where product managers, designers, and developers will come together to review upcoming tasks, which in Agile-talk we refer to as user stories or tickets. Although somewhat of an oversimplification, at its core, the purpose of refinement is to prioritize and estimate the amount of effort and level of complexity it takes a developer to implement each ticket in the form of story points so that we can effectively plan future work. So I just finished refinement and luckily I don't have any other meetings for the rest of the day. So I set aside a work block for me to focus on a few things. The first is an analysis that I'm doing on NPS or Net Promoter Scores. NPS gives us insight into how our customers perceive our product, and it's just one of many metrics that my team monitors and analyzes. Today, I'm crunching the data to uncover trends that can inform our product development strategy and roadmap. Specifically, I'm running regression analyses in R to see if I can find any variables that are predictive of higher NPS. And the second half of my focus time is spent drafting a PRD. The PRD is almost like a user manual for a new product or feature we're building. It specifies the user requirements, technical specifications, design guidelines and other critical details necessary for successfully creating the product. I think documentation can sometimes be perceived as tedious, but honestly, I really appreciate writing PRDs because it's a nice way for me to practice my writing skills. (damn what’s with this resting b*tch face) After I finished drafting my PRD, I log off and that pretty much wraps up a day in my life as a PM. As I mentioned before, the PM role can vary a lot between companies and industries, so my experiences are definitely not representative of all PMs, but hopefully you were still able to learn something new. When I'm in California, I usually hang out with my niece after work, but today I decided to grab some ramen at one of my favorite spots HiroNori And I have to say, if you ever find yourself in SoCal, you should check them out. And with that, this concludes the video. If you're interested in more content like this, please consider liking, commenting, or subscribing. I'll see you next time~ Bye~
