hey guys coming to you from Asheville North Carolina I am at national philanthropy day taking a little break outside of the conference room right now I had a thought yesterday and for those of you who know this is take two for the the Facebook blog post I tried to to yesterday and my phone was sideways well I did post that I didn't know it when I did it sideways it wouldn't flip it back over but apparently Carol and my tech guru for everything let me know that my phone was locked so it wouldn't move when I moved my camera so that was my fault I am NOT a tech genius but I admit that openly so anyway just wanted to mention another idea that I had as I was getting ready to sit down and write my checks to the organization that sent me the direct mail appeal with the stamp attached to the return envelope last week that as I was reading through the letter and trying to decide how much I was going to send them every last two things one they didn't tell me the value of my dollar so they didn't tell me it takes this much to save a cat or this much to feed a person or this much to provide medical services or whatever it is they didn't give me any kind of dollar amount for how much their services cost and how far my dollar would go to make those things happen the other thing they didn't do is ask me for a specific gift they didn't say would you consider contributing $40 to do this or would you consider making a gift of $50 for this so I'm kind of in that limbo place of I don't have to give a lot because they didn't make a specific ask so I'm assuming anything I send them is gonna be appreciate it but at the same time I don't know what my impact is gonna be so I don't know what kind of I don't know kind of dollar amount that I want to send so think about that when you were sending out your Direct Mail appeals people like to know the value of their dollar they also like to know how much you need from them if you are going to ever move donors up to another level of giving like let's say I've been giving you $400 for four years well you have to ask me for a larger amount to get me to that 500 point don't think that as a donor I'm just gonna automatically say hey I've been given four hundred for four years just go ahead and give them a little more money so make it easy for your donors to do two things make it easy for them to say yes by asking but also make it easy for them to determine if they're not ready to say yes to a larger amount and stay where they are but you still have to ask so make it easy for them to say yes or no by doing that you have to ask so just another thing to think about today as some of you may be preparing your year-end Appeals that you're going to send out or your holiday appeals and in preparation for the 20/80 planning 2018 planning season figuring out how you're gonna do your Direct Mail if you're going to and what those asks are gonna look like hope you guys are all having a wonderful Tuesday gonna be going out to lunch here after the national philanthropy day awards and then heading back down the mountain to Hickory so I'll check back them with you soon have a great day
