Acknowledgements: for: <|endoftext|>it was a story that sounded like it had been ripped straight out of a comic book, but then a couple of days ago it appeared that the US air force's secretive x-37b space plane -- known as the x-37b orbital test vehicle or otv-2 for short -- had finally made it back into earth orbit for the second time in its short history. The vehicle is launched from Vandenberg air force base in california and hoisted into a nearly orbital parking orbit around earth, before it's left to orbit the planet and return to earth at a later date. What's more, it's been doing this for years now, and the air force has not stopped the test flights, or the ongoing research that goes into the work. While a few months of delays has given us more of an idea about the nature of x-37b, the most recent mission, which took place a couple of weeks ago, came as something of a surprise. The vehicle was launched to low orbit, circled the planet and then, after a couple of days (!) in orbit, landed back on earth. The space agency that builds the craft, the Boeing company, has not provided additional details on the nature or purpose of the mission, but we have some guesses. It's possible that the vehicle will stay in orbit for longer than a couple of weeks. The otv-2 was launched on December 14, 2017, but only two days later on January 2, 2018, the vehicle had its second trip to earth -- a little under two months later this time. The second trip was probably to take the vehicle to the final phase of its testing, where it tests out the technologies that will be implemented into the next craft, the x-37c. It could be that the company is planning for the next space plane to stay in earth orbit for a greater period of time too, as the otv-4 mission has indicated that the x-37b can stay there for about a month. That's in addition to the current flights, which have been taking place for over a year. Boeing, in a statement to aviation week, said the payload on the previous mission launched successfully and that, “the space shuttle legacy continues to be a great asset to NASA." they went on to say that, while the space shuttle shuttles were retired, the reusable x-37b continues through a rigorous testing program to meet the "best in commercial industry standards."
