hello this is Christian Shea from Oracle and today I'm going to give you a demonstration of the Oracle developer tools for Visual Studio Oracle has been committed to supporting our dotnet developers in fact we've supported dotnet all the way back to version 1.0 all of our dotnet products are free and we work closely with Microsoft to make sure we can get the latest and greatest functionality out to you as quickly as possible case in point Visual Studio 2012 the Oracle developer tools for Visual Studio is a tightly integrated add-in that supports the Visual Studio data features that you see on the screen but we've also optimized it for Oracle developers so we added features such as a PL sequel editor appeal sequel debugger and tuning tools to help Oracle and dotnet developers get the best performance that they can so let's fire up Visual Studio 2012 and take a look at some of the cooler features that are available for Oracle and net developers so the first thing we'll do is create a connection and server Explorer now note that I'm using Oracle ODP net as my data source that's very important if you want to take advantage of all the features you're gonna see here today now I can take a look through my Oracle schema it's all visible there in server Explorer just like you would expect but we've also added context-sensitive menus for each of the Oracle schema types so in the case of a table we can launch a table designer so this is the Oracle table designer it gives you lots of options to use a nice GUI to modify and create tables of your choosing and in addition to this we also support Microsoft's own designers and wizards that are built into Visual Studio for example if you're using entity framework you'll certainly use the entity designer and wizards that go along with that and so in this case I end up with a couple of entities in my entity designer that are backed up by some Oracle tables now let's talk about a topic that's near and dear to all Oracle Oracle developers and that's PL sequel now as you can see we've built a PL sequel editor and debugger right individual studio you can see that many of the features are very similar to what you would do with c-sharp or visual basic.net I can compile my PL sequel program units right into the database and then step into my PL sequel application and debug it just like I would do bug c-sharp or Visual Basic and I don't just have to debug from server Explorer like I did here I can debug from dotnet code stepping into Peele sequel and back out to dotnet code again that's very powerful and that's PL sequel in the database but what about sequel scripts well I can easily highlight anything I want and server Explorer and generate a create script for it it'll take into account the appendices between the objects it'll put that a script inside my oracle database project that you see there on the right and then I can check the whole thing into source control now you see the sequel script editor here that takes into account the sequel dialect of Oracle and also uses the sequel plus execution engine underneath to execute it now let's talk about performance tuning we've added an ad hoc query window to allow developers to execute any sequel that they feel like so of course you can execute it here but you can also do some sequel tuning you just press the blue wrench and it will provide some feedback on the query or on the underlying tables and it also provides a nice report that you can provide to other members on your team who may need to assist you and finally let's suppose you have an app that's performing poorly the sequel inside has tuned ok but under load the application performs poorly when it hits the Oracle database well we have something called the Oracle performance analyzer so you run your application and then you start this and then you wait a period of time typically 20 minutes to an hour in this case we don't have that time so we'll wave our hands and this is the kind of result that you get from the Oracle performance analyzer it will provide recommendations so for example I was using literals instead of buying variables in my code and also I apparently was not using a connection like I should have and that wraps up this demo I've shown you some of the cooler features but by all means not all of them so please come to our Oracle and dotnet web Center at the Earle on your screen and get a free download of these products to try for yourself thanks a lot
