I'll share with you my personal experience.May 15th 2011 - As a college student while visiting my relatives along with my dad, I get my Naadi read in a place called Srirangam in Trichy district. After giving nothing but my thumb-print a gentleman had a palm leaf from which he first asked questions (which needed to be answered only as a Yes or No), ranging from my education, overall well-being, number of siblings I have etc. At no point, however, does he ask for my name or any other personal detail. These questions went on for sometime, and after asking them all, he tells me my name, my father's name and my mother's name. I've given the man nothing but my thumb print and here he is, reading out my life history as though it's already written. He spoke about my past, present and also spoke of my future and gave a glimpse of the kind of person I will become and made a passing mention of Pariharas (corrective Pooja/Prayer) which I need to perform but did not mention what they were, owing to some actions which I committed in my previous life. I was just 20 going to turn 21 and didn't really think much about it. The gentleman who read out my story gave my father and I a notebook with whatever he read out written on it in Tamil.Fast forward five years from then - I'm a successful HR professional in an MNC afyer having received my education in one of the finest colleges in the country and decide to go on a road trip in Tamil Nadu. Just like the Srirangam episode, he starts asking me questions to which I am to answer only as a Yes or No. After sometime, just like the earlier gentleman, he tells me my name, my father's name, mother's name and all my other personal details, ranging from date of birth, time of birth, birth nakshatra, sun and moon sign, etc.He asks me to wait for 15 minutes, after which he comes back and tells me "You've had the Naadi reading done before as well" and tells me the exact date when I got it read the previous time. The gentleman goes on to read my chart in detail talking about five major things - A. My current situationB. What I did in my previous life which is affecting me now and how I can mitigate that along with the Pariharas which I need to perform.C. My progeny, their overall health, well-being and my own work life and how it will shape upD. My relationship with my wife, parents and the wealth and general well-being of my immediate family membersE. General characteristics about myself and when will be the next time I will come searching to have my Naadi readHe gave a heads-up to some of the major events i can expect every two years and how my life will shape up and what I can expect when and how.Now that my narration is over, I want to highlight a few things - 1. The history behind how and why Naadi astrology came into being is quite interesting. I would definitely recommend people to take the time out and read about it from whatever sources are present on the internet2. Having said that, there are people who believe very strongly in what these gentlemen have to say and there are those who debunk it and choose not to believe in them as well3. The inscriptions on the palm leaves are in a form of old Tamil called Grantham. This is said to have been passed on for many generations by the saint Agastya to his disciples and so on. The gentlemen who read from these palm leaves are said to have had 10-15 years of training before they read out the lives/histories of others4. Vaitheeswarankoil is known as the de facto head quarters of Naadi Jyotishas as most of them have grown in and around the Vaidyanathaswamy temple in that town5. I like to state this interesting quote from Lenny in Ocean's Twelve when he's talking to Terry Benedict and says - I pay money to people to get my future right and sometimes even they get it wrong6. Believing or not believing in these methods of astrology is merely a matter of choice and nothing more. While some involve guesswork and observations, some like the Naadi Jyotishas may claim to be eliminating improbabilities to arrive at the final possibility/inevitability. Fail:DropboxDropbox is great. I use it and love it. However, they got hit by every founders nightmare. The bigger guy coming in and crushing them. Even with their $10 billion valuation, they can't compete with Google. Google is just better at everything they do than them. I love Dropbox, but unfortunately I don't see a path forward for them without pivoting. Succeed:UberUber has almost managed to achieve a too big to fail status. They're huge. Large enterprise clients love them, their smaller customers love them and their investors love them. Plus, Travis Kalanick doesn't take no for an answer. The IPO market has been bad for the past 18-24 months, so I don't see any reason for them to rush there. They have more than enough private funding, and should they need more, they will have no problem raising it.Can go either way:SnapchatSnapchat is a great product, if you're under 20. If you're over 20, and not named Gary Vaynerchuk, you're probably still trying to figure out how to best utilize snapchat. Evan Spiegel has built an excellent platform. But the question is, how much are advertisers willing to pay for space on a platform where everything disappears. It's a unique idea that the younger generation has embraced, however, they have yet to prove their revenue model. And at the end of the day, that's the most important thing. Another thing about Snapchat is that they're beyond the point of acquisition. Facebook made them an offer about two years ago, but with their new $10-20 billion valuation, the likelihood of an acquisition is far lower. If I had to place a bet, I'd definitely say they'll succeed, but the road ahead won't be easy. My bad.On Japanese mainstream media you often hear that there is a "lack of IT technicians." According to NHK morning program ohayō Nippon, 87% of IT companies say they need more IT technicians. It is specially true in startups (ventures) because Japanese people still prefer to secure a job in a big Japanese company (social pressure and reputation is high when it comes to once company’s name).In addition, the Japanese IT world suffers of so called "3K" reputation. In Japanese, 3K stands for きつい、帰れない、給料が安い (Kitsui, Kaerenai, Kyūryō ga yasui) or, in English, "hard, unable to go back home, low salary". There are unfortunately a lot of unscrupulous "black" corporation in the IT world.Therefore, there is a brain drain in the Japanese IT world. Event Scheduler and Calendar - Make an application which allows the user to enter a date and time of an event, event notes and then schedule those events on a calendar. The user can then browse the calendar or search the calendar for specific events. Optional: Allow the application to create re-occurrence events that reoccur every day, week, month, year etc. Budget Tracker - Write an application that keeps track of a household’s budget. The user can add expenses, income, and recurring costs to find out how much they are saving or losing over a period of time. Mp3 Player - A simple program for playing your favorite music files. Add features you think are missing from your favorite music player. Watermarking Application - Have some pictures you want copyright protected? Add your own logo or text lightly across the background so that no one can simply steal your graphics off your site. Make a program that will add this watermark to the picture. Optional: Use threading to process multiple images simultaneously. Turtle Graphics - This is a common project where you create a floor of 20 x 20 squares. Using various commands you tell a turtle to draw a line on the floor. GIF Creator A program that puts together multiple images (PNGs, JPGs, TIFFs) to make a smooth GIF that can be exported. Optional: Make the program convert small video files to GIFs as well. Security Caesar cipher - Implement a Caesar cipher, both encoding and decoding. The key is an integer from 1 to 25. This cipher rotates the letters of the alphabet (A to Z). The encoding replaces each letter with the 1st to 25th next letter in the alphabet (wrapping Z to A). So key 2 encrypts "HI" to "JK", but key 20 encrypts "HI" to "BC". This simple "monoalphabetic substitution cipher" provides almost no security, because an attacker who has the encoded message can either use frequency analysis to guess the key, or just try all 25 keys.
