December has always been a very special month in my life. It is not only because of the cool winter breeze, but also because of the festival Christmas which is celebrated around the world with great zeal and enthusiasm. Most of us including me eagerly wait for this time of the year. This is because it also brings holidays with it.I fondly remember, when I was a child we used to celebrate Christmas in school. There were different kinds of delicacies which my friends brought to eat such as cakes, pastries, etc. . It was so much fun back then. We all used to play a game called ‘Secret Santa’ where we were asked to choose 1 chit from the bucket. Whosoever name came out from that chit , had to bring a gift for that person. I was studying in 12th grade, which marked the last year of my schooling . It was the month of December and like every year we were to play the Secret Santa game. We all chose 1 chit and we were supposed to bring the gift, the next day. I brought a pencil box as a gift. The gift I received in return was a gift that I could never forget. I still carry it with me now also wherever I go. It was a tiny locket of Jesus Christ. The one from whom I received the gift, her name was Rose . She was one of my best friends in school. Now the time has passed and we all have parted our ways but the gift that I received will be with me forever.They say, ‘LOVE THE GIVER MORE THAN THE GIFT’ and for me, I loved the giver and I loved what she gave.

It all comes down to individual choice and what you are willing to allow someone to do for you with your travel and how much trust you are willing to give them to get things right for you. I know there are many people out there who love spending time planning their trips and looking for the best deals. One of the reasons I got into the travel business was my love for planning and customising vacations. Not just for myself but family and friends too. They loved the fact that I was saving them time and money. Once I opened my own travel business I was exposed to so many more resources than I had before. I could now save them even more time and money. When it comes to using a travel professional the question is should you pay them for their services to plan your trip? Yes! But here's the thing, we have our clients sign an "Intent to Book" contract and pay a fee. In the contract we go over what they can expect from us. The contract also specifies that when the client books with us, what out of the fee we keep for administrative costs and what is applied to the client's final payment. If the client elects not to book with us then the contract very clearly states that we keep the whole fee as compensation for our time spent researching and planning their vacation. We never used to charge fees until reality stepped in and showed us we needed to protect ourselves. We had one client we spent almost 20 hours planning their trip completely customised vacation including everything they wanted and coming in $2,000 under budget. We presented them with the first draft of the itinerary with the package pricing. We went over their itinerary with them; we had included everything they asked for. We then asked them to look it over together without us being there and then we could make any changes they wanted or go ahead and book it. They called me the next day as planned and told me they had booked everything themselves as they could get it cheaper online than we had quoted them. The trip in the end cost them over $5,000 MORE than I had originally quoted them for the entire package putting them more than $3,000 OVER their budget. Now you are asking why when they said they could book it cheaper. If they had booked through us everything would have been pre-paid upfront in US dollars and included items they wanted that would normally cost extra. Prices and services were then locked in. When they booked everything themselves they couldn't pre-pay most of it upfront. Prices and services changed and they were charged international fees and exchange rates on their credit cards when they did pay at the time of service. They also didn't get exactly what they wanted. For example, my suppliers included breakfast per the client's request with all their hotel stays in the hotels the client had specified. There was no option to include breakfast when they booked direct with the hotels they wanted so they had to pay for breakfast. Some of their breakfasts were $40 per person per day! Their day tours through our suppliers included some extras for them. When they booked direct they didn't get those extras, they had to pay for them or the options to add them weren't available. All the extras they wanted included in their vacation were included in the package pricing I gave them. They did their own research online but didn't compare Apples to Apples they compared Apples to Oranges and it taught them an expensive lesson. One they will not repeat again.I know people are willing to pay $25 each way for someone to book their flights. This is not an unreasonable cost. Before we started charging to book flights we researched and were surprised that some people were charging as much as $100 each way to book air. I guess some people are willing to pay that for the convenience of having someone else do it for them. The average price we found was $25 each way. If someone was doing just a straight round trip then it would be $50. If they were doing multiple destinations it would be $25 per destination.When it comes to anything other than airfare there was a wide range of pricing from $100 to over $5000. We set our Intent to Book fees (starting at $250) based on number of people, length of travel and how much customization they want.If someone likes and trusts the person doing the planning then the planner can just about name their price and the people will pay. People are willing to pay someone to take away the headache of planning, finding the best deals, best locations, etc so they don't have to do it themselves.

Roosevelt was cutthroat, Machiavellian and a master at riling up populist sentiment to achieve his aims.“But Robbb, he is consistently rated as one of the best Presidents in our history”, I hear you say. Ya, ya, and I liked him too until I started to read more about the man. Hear me out before smashing the downvote.FDR was elected in 1932 when the United States of America was deep into the Great Depression and crippling unemployment was on the rise:Roosevelt responded to this unprecedented situation with unprecedented measures… measures which have molded our public policy and our conception of the role of the Federal government for decades. It switched our focus from individualism to collectivism. A dangerous switch because it allows the government to justify almost any action against an individual for the supposed good of the group.His administration implemented a slew of policies which relegated more and more power away from the States and to the Federal government such as: Civilian Conservatiom Corps, Civil Works Administration, and the National Recovery Act.These policies had a startling similarity to programs enacted by Facist Italy and Nazi Germany.All of these programs had the best of intentions, I assure you. However, the best of intentions does not always equate to Constitutional.. the CCC and the NRA (no, not that NRA) were both declared unconstitutional in 1934.In 1936 Roosevelt gave a stirring speech at Madison Square Garden stirring up class conflict by deriding an alleged secret conspiracy of bankers, industrialists and the wealthy against him, his efforts, and the people.“I should like to have it said of my first Administration that in it the forces of selfishness and of lust for power met their match. I should like to have it said of my second Administration that in it these forces met their master.”In 1937 FDR tried to overcome the resistance his policies faced in the Supreme Court by attempting to expand the Court and fill it with Justices more palatable toward his own policies.Democratic norms be damned…Speaking of norms being damned… in 1940 FDR decided to run for an unprecedented THIRD TERM.. (and later a fourth term, cause why the hell not?) this was completely breaking with over 100 years of tradition at the time set in place by George Washington.Democracies and Republics stand on tradition.In 1941, but before the USA was involved in the war, FDR initiated the Lend-Lease program to give material support to those Nations fighting the Axis. A policy viewed by many as inching the United States into war.. even though the overwhelming majority of Americans did not want to be involved in the troubles of the Old World.“December 7th 1941, a date which will live in infamy” …But really now.. the date which should live in infamy is February 19, 1942. This was when FDR signed Executive Order 9066 which is when FDR used the power of the Federal Government to confiscate the property of over 100,000 U.S. citizens and make them live in camps merely because of their ancestry!I live in Marin County in California. I’ve seen these camps for myself. And I know individuals whose ancestors were forced to give up their lives, their rights and their dignity to reside in these camps..OH! And let’s not forget when FDR continued to deport all those other people with brown skin to Mexico (even if they were citizens). Ethnic cleansing… no big deal. Right?I could keep nitpicking about this detail or that detail about FDR’s administration.Like his hostility towards the press…Or the near dictatorial powers he was granted to prosecute the war…Or his affinity for Joseph Stalin…If he had more longevity who knows how many times he would have run for President and won?The last little fact I want to tell you is that our dear President Roosevelt was responsible for an amendment to the Constitution… despite having been dead for years… the 22nd Amendment. How did this happen? Well, that amendment makes it clear that no President may serve more than TWO (elected) TERMS. Ever. Because everyone, even those who supported FDR, were terrified of another popular politician attempting to retain that office for as long as Roosevelt had.I think President Jefferson said it best:“If some termination to the services of the chief magistrate be not fixed by the Constitution, or supplied by practice, his office, nominally for years, will in fact, become for life; and history shows how easily that degenerates into an inheritance.”Franklin Delano Roosevelt veered far too closely to Dictator. Thankfully our system of government melted those wax wings nearly every time he attempted to signNow the sun.TL:DRFDR was responsible for gathering vast amounts of power into the Federal Government generally and the Presidency specifically. When laws he enacted were struck down by our highest court, he attempted to stuff it full of Justices who would agree with him. He broke our democratic norms and traditions by running for a 3rd and 4th term. He channeled populist angst for his political benefit. And he locked up US citizens and deported others for no reason other than the color of their skin. So yes, it all sounds kinda dictatorial to me.Edit:I would like to clarify that I do hold FDR in high esteem. His administration certainly had to deal with many unprecedented problems. Yes, he is important. Many of the things he did were praiseworthy and still are. On the whole, I believe his Presidency to be a net positive for the United States.BUT.The purpose of this answer was to see FDR in a different light. All too often we see him through rose colored glasses. Americans can’t afford to do that. We need to learn from the past, understand it and see if we can apply those lessons in the present. FDR was a great man, with grevious flaws. We should acknowledge those flaws.

Over the years, there have been several people (suspects, offenders, witnesses, victims, etc.) who have said kind things to me. One that comes to mind is probably the most recent. As a captain, I’m not often out on patrol and I make very few traffic stops. A few weeks ago however, I saw a vehicle traveling the wrong direction in a traffic circle. Given the danger presented, I stopped the motorist and saw that the vehicle was driven by a tiny African American lady of about 65 (I am a not so tiny 55-year-old Caucasian man), and that she was confused and upset by the unfamiliar traffic control device into which she had driven. I helped get her turned around and pulled to the side of the road where we were both safe. Pursuant to Department policy, I asked her for her license, registration and proof of insurance. She paused a moment and then started looking through her purse, center console and glove compartment for the requested documentation. Based on my experience, this suggested to me that she did not have one or more of the documents I had asked her to produce. I asked her if she had a driver’s license and she admitted that her license was suspended. I couldn’t help but notice the tears welling up in her eyes. I had already noticed that her license plate was expired, as was her motor vehicle inspection sticker. I then asked if her automobile was insured, and she told me it was not.In my jurisdiction, unless there are exigent circumstances, a vehicle found to be uninsured is to be towed and impounded. In addition, a motorist found to be driving under suspension may, at the discretion of the officer, be arrested, and should not be permitted to drive away from the traffic stop absent exigent circumstances which mitigate against preventing the motorist from driving any further. The lady had tears streaming down her cheeks, knowing she had a problem. She was wearing a business outfit, so I asked her where she was going, thinking that I might be able to drop her off if time was a problem. She explained that the previous week, she was hired by a local hospital and that day was to be her first at her new job. She explained that she had lost her home and job in August of 2016 when our area suffered through the worst flood to affect the area in modern history. Approximately 80% of the homes and businesses in our area flooded during the event. Many had never flooded before, were not in flood zones and consequently, many families and businesses were left with nothing, following the inundation. This lady was one of those.She understood that she was in trouble, and she understood that despite her good intentions, she was breaking the law. But there was no anger or bitterness. In her face, I saw only resolve and determination. She never once suggested that she deserved a break. She didn’t hint at leniency. She expressed no self-pity and did not seek to shift the blame. While I may not have shown it, I was very impressed with the way she was handling the experience.I told the lady, whom I’ll call Ms. Smith, to have a seat in her car, turn on her air conditioner (it was about 95), and that I would be back with her as quickly as possible. I then returned to my unit and checked her registration and driver’s license. I determined that her license was suspended due to her inability to honor a payment plan with the DMV that she had signNowed in order to resolve the fines assessed to her when her insurance lapsed. She was uninsured; her history showed that over the last several years, her insurance lapsed several times, She always managed to have her insurance reinstated but the administrative fees had built up over time. Her registration had expired two months earlier. However, with a suspended driver’s license, she could not renew her registration or obtain an updated motor vehicle inspection sticker. Clearly, she was in a vicious spiral and putting her in jail or doing anything to cost her the new job would not be helpful.I carefully considered my options, recognizing that my obligation to protect and serve includes keeping people without the mandatory liability insurance off of the road. Her failure to have the required insurance presented a problem for me. Under our law, were she to have an at-fault accident and it was discovered that I had stopped her and failed to take the appropriate action, I could be held responsible. If I towed her car, she would likely lose her new job which was going to pay her enough to get the required insurance, take care of her suspended driver’s license and generally make her life better for the first time in two years. As I sat there considering what to do, I suddenly remembered something. I got out of my unit, walked up to car and looked in the back seat. There, behind the front passenger seat was a rear-facing baby seat, buckled snuggly into place. “I meant to ask you about the baby seat,” I told her. “Oh,” she replied. “That’s for my grand baby,” she told me. “I take her to day care each morning so that my daughter can make it to nursing school on time. This is our only car.” “Do they live with you all the time.” I asked. “Yes, sir! They’re my best friends,” she said with a smile.I thanked her and returned to my unit. I smiled too and thought to myself, “Exigent circumstances! Can’t tow that car if there are exigent circumstances.” I prepared the lady a citation for driving under suspension. I hated to do it, but the only discretion we have in such cases is jail or a misdemeanor summons. I did, however, exercise my discretion and prepared a warning for the expired driver’s license and expired vehicle inspection sticker. I then made a quick phone call before walking back to her car, ticket book in hand. As the little lady waited to hear her fate, I began. “OK, Ms. Smith, here is where we are,” I told her. “I have to issue you a citation for driving under suspension. I have no choice. However, you’re not being arrested, only fined.” She asked me how much the fine would be and I told her that I did not know, but that I had called the Clerk of Court, asked that they let her pay over a period of six months, and that they had agreed. I then handed her the citation and asked her to sign where indicated. She signed and then remembered the other charges. “Is there another ticket,” she asked? “No Ma’am,” I told her. “Apparently, I am out of tickets and don’t have time to go and get some more.” She seemed confused and asked, “I know you have to tow my car, Captain. I was just wondering if there is any way that you can let me get to work first. I can park it around back where nobody will see it and you can tow it from there, if it’s not too much trouble.”“Well, Ms Smith, it looks like your car isn’t going to be towed today. As it turns out, there are exigent circumstances that allow me to let you keep your car. But you have to get insurance within 30 days.” She didn’t understand, so I explained that since there is an infant in their house, since they had only one car, and since that car was the child’s sole means of transportation to day care, such a situation created exigent circumstances which allowed me to decline to tow the car, provided that I had a reasonable belief that the required insurance would be obtained within 30 days. She assured me that they would get the insurance they needed.I wished her good luck and told her to be safe and I turned around to walk back to my unit as the tears started rolling down her cheeks again. Before I could walk away, however, Ms. Smith called out to me, “Captain Sharp!” I turned back to her. “I don’t know if you’re allowed or not, but would it be OK if I gave you a hug?” I told her I would love a hug, and it was the best hug of the day.I’m sorry that it took so long to answer your question, but, “Would it be OK if I gave you a hug?” was one of the kindest things that a suspect ever said to me.
