What was the most blatant scam a customer has ever failed to get away with?
When I was a broke college student in the early 1990s, I worked in a busy bookstore in a mall in downtown Boston. The register was located at the front of the store, on a raised platform, so we could monitor customers as they came and left. One day when I was working the register, I noticed a cute guy enter the store carrying a metal clipboard—the kind that had a compartment for storing a notebook or additional paperwork. After disappearing into the back of the store, the guy returned moments later and got in line. When it was his turn, he smiled at me, opened the clipboard’s compartment, and ...

How can I clear the Cognizant interviews?
Hello,I am a Computer Science Engineering student of 2019 batch and I attended the Cognizant recruitment drive (Off-campus) on 22nd June 2019. From our year there had been a small change in the exam pattern for Cognizant. The recruitment consists of 3 steps:-1> Online Aptitude Test2> Technical Interview3> HR Interview**Remember all of the above rounds are eliminating rounds. For Example-> You have to secure the cutoff marks in the Aptitude test to qualify for the Technical Interview. Like that**1> Aptitude TestThis test is taken by Aspiring Minds (commonly known as AMCAT). This test is taken online. All will beMCQ type and **there will be NO NEGATIVE MARKINGS**.This test will contain 4 sections namely-> Verbal Ability; Quants; Logical Ability; Automata Fixing.Okay, now let me explain these all one by one.>> Verbal Ability:-> This part contains mainly English Grammar and Comprehensions. Just go through any basic English grammar books of class 9,10 standard then you can easily get through this section. This section will contain questions from Prepositions; Articles; Idioms; Phrases; Jumbled Sentences; etc. Regarding Comprehension, see there will be 3-4 paragraphs based on which 4-5 questions will be asked. Total questions will be 22-25 and time will be 18 minutes.>> Quants:-> This part will be the most time consuming section according to me. But trust me that this part will only contain class 8,9,10 standard mathematics. So if you are good at mathematics you will clear the section. For preparation go through INDIABIX (seriously it helped me a lot) and RS Agarwal Quantitative Aptitude Book. This section mainly contains Profit & Loss; Percentage; Pipes & Cistern; Work & Time; Boats & Streams; Basic Algebra; Basic Trigonometry; Mensuration; and few others. This section will contain 15-18 questions.>> Logical Ability:-> This part will contain various types of questions like Puzzles; Jumbled words; Series; Comparison; Analogy; Blood Relationship; etc. This will be a little tough section if you have not practiced enough. Again refer INDIABIX for this section also and RS Agarwal verbal and non-verbal reasoning book. This section will contain 16-18 questions.>> Automata Fixing:-> So this is the NEWLY ADDED SECTION from our year. In this section there will be 7 programming questions to complete in 20 minutes. But this section will be not MCQ type. Now Listen very Important. You do not have to write the full code of the program. Rather you just need to write the missing lines in the code given for that specific problem. There will be 3-4 test cases for each problem statement and you have to pass all of them. Then I got selected for Technical Interviewer.2>> Technical InterviewI was waiting the auditorium and the volunteer called my name. I entered the auditorium and then sat in front of the interviewer and then things happened like this.(TR-> Technical Interviewer)TR> Introduce yourself.Me> Told about my schooling; hobbies; stream; college; certifications.TR> What's your favorite subject?Me> Told DBMS.TR> Solve this. (He gave me a sheet of paper where there were 3 tables with some data and he told me to JOIN)Me> Solved.TR> What are Group By, Order By?Me> Told.TR> What's your favorite programming language?Me> C and Java also.TR> Write a code to find Prime numbers between a range of numbers. (Like if inputs are a=10 and b=20 then output will be 11, 13, 17, 19).Me> Solved but could not complete it.TR> Explain your solution.Me> I explained.TR> Write a code of Bubble Sort.Me> Solved easily actually.TR> Any Questions?Me> My areas for improvement and Training Period.TR> Thank you.Me> Thank you sir. Then I got selected for HR Interview.3>> HR InterviewHR> How's your day?Me> Good sir.HR> Introduce yourself apart from what written in your CV.Me> Told.HR> Why you want to join Cognizant?Me> Told.HR> Any Relocation problem?Me> No.HR> Why you will leave Kolkata when there are opportunities here also?Me> Told.HR> Told me the different shift timings at Cognizant.Me> Not a problem sir.HR> signNow. (It was a declaration about timings, relocation)Me> Signed.HR> Thank you.Me> Thank you sir.Bang!!! It's over.On 26th June 2019 I got the SELECTION LETTER about my selection in Cognizant. If you have liked this review then PLEASE GIVE A UPVOTE.Thank you and I wish you are going to be my future colleague.

What's the shadiest tactic you've witnessed HR use at your job?
They used false “help wanted” ads to fire their own employees that were looking for a new job.I worked for a lead generation service which sold qualified lists of homeowners (and their telephone numbers) to financial advisers. Then, they sold those same financial advisers a telemarketing service that would call those homeowners and arrange appointments with them. There is so much that is “shady” about this company that it is impossible to bring up one questionable act without first explaining several previous questionable or downright illegal acts. (UPDATE: if you want more details about how bad it was to work for this place, check out John Hursey's answer to What is the most ridiculous reason for which you have been fired?)After a particularly horrifying series of events right around the holiday season, I decided to begin looking for a new job. I got on craigslist, and I found several positions in customer service and data entry that were available right in my city. I sent them a quick email with my resume attached, and waited for a response. The next day I was called into the President’s office. He invited me to sit down. His mother (the vice president of the company) was standing behind him. He asked me if I was happy working for him.Luckily for me, I knew this was a trap of some kind and answered honestly. I told him that I was interested in having more free time with a more flexible schedule and that it would be impossible to do so with my current job, so I was in the process of looking for something else. I also told him that I had informed my direct supervisor of my intentions last week, and that I would give the company adequate warning—at least two weeks notice—before I quit.He and his mother looked at each other. Well, he said, it turns out that one of the companies I had applied to was the very same company I worked for now. I thought that was odd, because I don’t have any intellectual disabilities or mental impairments that would indicate I would apply to the same company that I currently worked for. Nevertheless, I told him that I suppose this was good news, since perhaps I could simply transfer to whatever this open position was and still maintain my employment with his company while working the schedule that was most convenient for myself. Not so fast. It turned out there wasn’t any positions available in those departments. Their strategy was to entice applicants with positions in data entry and customer service and then during the interview inform them that those positions had been filled; those applicants were then offered much less pay and schedule flexibility as a salesman. In addition, current employees that applied for these jobs were summarily fired for being “disloyal.”A month later I was terminated, for reasons I still do not fully understand. I applied for unemployment, and when I explained the series of events leading to my termination the lady at the unemployment office literally scoffed at me and told me that my story was unbelievable. She even called me personally at home to tell me that the company was contesting my unemployment filing and that she expected me to lose the arbitration process. The day of the hearing I got a phone call from the same lady, in tears. She apologized profusely for how she had treated me. She had just completed a five-minute interaction with the president and his mother, confirming not only my story but also her worst fears about humanity in general.

While repairing a computer, have you ever found something illegal on it?
Yes. Early in my career, I repaired computers for a well known franchise that required us to dress in a nerdy uniform and run repairs. Most were boring. People come in complaining of slow response, lag, etc, and we ran through a standard slew of repairs, including blowing out the machine, a quick physical inspection, and running antivirus and malware repair software. Nine times out of ten, we found porn on computers—this was back in the earlier file sharing days, so often when you found a folder near the root entitled “New Folder,” you instantly grinned to yourself, knowing what was inside before clicking on it. The guys I worked with (mostly young and single) would even occasionally copy some clips they liked. Certainly no one judged, and we even phrased things carefully when talking with customers, speaking very generally about how free movies and music could be dangerous to your machine. One day, however, I remember dealing with a guy who was quite horrible, who made quite a lot of noise at check in about how this was his business machine and how we needed to make sure we didn’t mess up any of his important documents or records. He was quite rude about it. Later that night I was working on a different machine in the back, and I still will never forget watching a young man blanch as he clicked open the file folder that contained what appeared to be a massive amount of child pornography. We barely glanced at it but it was horrifying. I remember a corporate office being called and authorities basically instructing us to summon him as if his computer was done. When he showed, he was very quickly whisked away. The computer was seized as evidence. I never saw him again, and mentally filed away the encounter as a reminder to always trust my spidey sense with people.

Do you know anybody who sabotaged their co-workers job?
It happened to me. It turned a happy career into a horrible job. But this story has a really satisfying ending!I worked in an office with a man who I’d known since childhood. We started out as enemies, but by 7th grade, we were close friends. After college, we both came back to the same city, and in a few years, both wound up working for the same company. We were both top performers on different teams of the same department. We weren’t exactly close friends anymore, but I didn’t think we were enemies again. One day, I was called into a manager’s office (my ex-friend’s manager, not mine) and I was accused of cheating on my productivity. I didn’t cheat, but I did work a case in an unusual way, which gave me a slight amount of extra productivity credit: the amount of extra credit I received that month for the incident was less than 1 minute for the whole month; not enough to even affect the final monthly score.I pointed this out to the manager, but he didn’t understand our jobs, so it went over his head. He only saw the unusual way I handled the case, and that I got productivity credit I didn’t deserve. It turned out, that my ex-friend had found this case while unethically prying into my work, and was fueling his manager to take this seriously. This “friend” had reviewed 200 cases of mine to find this unusual case (about 2 months’ work). I’m not sure where he found the time to do that.I explained why I worked the case in a non-standard way. The computer system would not allow it to close, so I used my supervisor entitlements to alter some of the non-essential data so I could close the case manually. I was a very trusted employee, and I didn’t give it any thought. In fact, after I had completed it, I thought it was a very creative way to handle it.I lost the argument. I had to sign a resignation letter that HR held onto, and if I did one more “dishonest” thing, they would consider me resigned, and I wouldn’t even get unemployment pay. I also got my supervisor entitlement taken away. The worst part though, was that my “friend” was a gossip. So soon everyone knew the dishonest thing I had done. For 2 years, I suffered humiliation in that department. But then something wonderful happened. I applied for a management job, and so did my “friend.” I got the job, and he got to watch bitterly as I was promoted. My new manager, fully aware of my so-called discommendation, pulled the offensive documents out of my HR file and handed them to me. He said I should do whatever I wanted with them, because he didn’t believe a word of it.I looked through it, to find it full of notes in my friend’s handwriting. It went into the shred bin.A few years later, we were all laid off, but I got another last laugh. I got the management severance package, which worked out to about 2 years of pay plus benefits and perks. He got the hourly employee package, which was about 6 months of pay with no benefits. It couldn’t have happened to a nicer guy. This was 10 years ago. I never saw him again.

Which 'what-if-I-were-1minute-earlier/later' incident changed your life?
The pee break which saved me and my dad! There was a time when me and my dad used to visit my granny’s house every alternate week. On one such occasion, we missed the bus while returning back, hence we decided to ask the passing goods trucks to give us a lift.In India, the truck drivers usually are quite willing to give lifts to 1–2 passengers, so that they can make some quick bucks. After waiting for some 30 mins, a truck stopped by. The goods trucks in India look somewhat like this:I was around 7–8 years old at that time. When we were about to enter the truck, I started pestering my dad that I wanted to pee. He told me we can take a break after some time, but I told him that it was very urgent, and I cannot wait. My dad, who was almost about to sit inside the truck, got down and asked the driver to go ahead, albeit a bit reluctantly, since it was quite late in the night, and the number of trucks passing by was very less. So, after I was done with my nature’s call, we went back to the highway, and my dad started waving his hand for lift. Luckily, after about 15 mins, a truck stopped by, and we got in. After we had traveled for some 10kms or so, our truck slowed down, since there was some congestion in the traffic. There was an accident- an ambulance and two police vans were blaring the sirens. When we moved a little further, we saw that it was the same truck which we had let go a little while earlier, which had crashed into a light post. It had rained heavily that night, and I guess the truck had skidded and went off-road. My dad hugged me tight, till we signNowed our home at around 1.30AM on that eventful night! In a few days, most of our relatives came to know about this incident, and I became a Dark-Knight-Who-Went-For-A-Pee for a few more months after that…:-D

How do I decide when to be pro-government and when not while answering UPSC mains/interview questions?
Don't try to be consciously pro- or not-pro government ever. It will show. And a smart examiner will not like it, if it's overdone.RatherBe correct technically - Irrespective of what the question is, your answer must be laden with right facts to make it look-feel-sound genuine and not opinionated. This automatically, and starkly, reduces the chances of personal biases of examiners harming you. So, when animals are put into a race that burns them out, kills some of them, and that's been the case for centuries, in today's times it does not sound like too humane a custom. Use polite, neutral language in controversial issues - Most issues are usually non-controversial. But the few you feel are, be very cautious about using polite language. That takes the potential sting out of a dangerous situation. It makes you sound very soft! Criticism can be very pleasing if the right words are used. Try doing that.Avoid personal biases - We all have our likes and hatreds, our passions and derangements. Keep them out of the examination process because they have this unique ability to make even the most intelligent of people look completely idiotic, at times. They can cloud your otherwise normally functioning brain, and all that you'll sputter out is junk laced with passionate personalised arguments. Pointless. The government isn't interested. Go become a politician if you're serious. So if voicing your opinion freely matters a lot to you, but can endanger the nation by inviting terrorists attention to potential recruits, in today's environment of global mayhem (economic and otherwise), it's soundly unsound to stick to the "I want a completely free internet" pole.Try supporting the Supreme Court's perspectives - If a matter has ended up in the SC, and the verdict is out, chances are that some of the best minds have already been applied to it, and all the facts have been examined thoroughly. There is little point - except when you're personally involved - in arguing to the contrary. Try seeing sense in what the SC said in some case. You'll not only stay out of controversy (as an examinee) but you'll also be forced to read up facts that'll further help you make informed opinions. So, if the SC has junked some amendment trying to fundamentally change the way judges are appointed, try not to criticise the SC's immediate decision. Rather, speak of delays in justice delivery and indirectly make your assertion. Don't criticise the government either (in this example), as that'll surely seal your fate!Avoid extremes as much as possible - No one, remember, no one likes an extreme intellectual. Because governments do not run on extremes. They run on the golden middle road. As a civil servant, even the execution of justice delivery locally will require tact and diplomacy far higher than you'd imagine now.I hope most of this clears the air.The worst situation would be when you prepare yourself (i.e. your answers) as per the government in power, and the elections throw up a new government altogether! It'd be catastrophic for your preparation! So stay technically correct, on the middle path, avoiding extremes, respecting the Judiciary, and do it politely. You'll rock!
