Is a USB flash drive reliable for storing data?
For dropping some files onto a drive at work and “sneaker-netting” it home, sure, the USB Flash drive is quite good. For long-term storage? Nope. In fact, nearly any other kind of storage will be more reliable in the long term.The Architecture of a Flash CellFlash memory is a relatively recent invention, so we don’t have as much history as you might think about longevity. But enough to know that flash is a temporary thing. This wasn’t a shock or even a problem, for several reasons, but largely because in its initial use, flash memory replaced EPROM (erasable programmable read-only memory), which itself had a limited longevity.A flash memory cell is made of a MOSFET transistor with a “floating” gate. This is a gate surrounded by insulators. To write a bit, electrons tunnel through the insulator and are stored on the floating gate in a process called channel hot-electron injection. To erase a cell, Fowler-Nordheim tunnelling is used.The original sort of flash was retronymed “SLC”, for single level charge. This is what you’d expect out of a binary thing: there’s either a programmed charge on the gate (0) or no charge (1). An SLC flash cell should last about 90,000–100,000 program/erase (P/E) cycles…. some specialized parts can last 1,000,000 P/E cycles.However, flash designers got more clever, and came up with “MLC” flash, for multi-level charge. Now they could write three different levels of charge, plus no charge, to deliver two bits per cell. However, this made the cells more fragile, less robust against corruption over time. More robust “enterprise” qualified MLC flash memories used in more expensive SSDs have a write/erase lifetime of about 20,000–30,000 write/erase cycles. Normal consumer oriented MLC flash memories have delivered about 5,000-10,000 P/E cycles, and they’re down to around 3,000 P/E cycles at the 15nm node. And even more recently, we have “TLC” flash, which puts in seven levels of charge or none, to store three bits per cell. That’s one of the reasons flash memory got so cheap. But you’re going see cells failing after 1,000–3,000 P/E cycles.And here’s the other thing… flash has, for awhile, been getting worse. The highest density 2-D TLC chips may only deliver 300 P/E cycles these days. The wear mechanism in flash memory is primarily due to stress on the tunnel oxide layer in each cell. The oxide layer degrades as electrons, over time, become trapped in the oxide. And as we’ve been shrinking the chip geometries of these cells, their longevity has been dropping. Curiously, when a drive runs hotter, there’s less stress on the insulator, so the overall effect is a longer lived drive… but shorter data life. The 3-D chips used in high density flash have increased longevity and data retention, as they’ve mostly gone to larger chip geometries.Data RetentionSo as mentioned, there’s a charge — a bunch of electons — placed on an insulated gate. That’s your storage mechanism. There are only so many electrons, and over time, they’re gradually going to leak off the gate. At the high end, the specialized, small flash memories in embedded microcontrollers can be expected to last 20 years to 100 years at 25C. On the other hand, Intel recommends unpowered consumer SSDs for data retention of only a year. And this is exacerbated as the drive takes on wear.Now, for SSDs, it’s a bit different when the drive is active. Between wear levelling and data enhancing routines, an active drive will last considerably longer than a year, even the static data stored on that drive. There’s quite a bit going on within a modern SSD that you never actually see, which is designed to spread wear out across the drive. USB drives, though, don’t run data-enhancing routines.And the trend toward less reliable flash has started to reverse itself, at least for now. The 14nm or so node is about as small as a practical NAND cell can go today, even though we have smaller chip geometries. They just get too unreliable. So the larger memories coming out today, 256GB per chip and so, are actually 3D chips using larger geometries. Some of these stack 48 bits worth of data on separate layers, and the reliablity is up.Mechanical and Environmental IssuesFlash drives of any kind will lose data faster in warm environments. Most consumer USB dongles are not recommended for use over 40C or storage over 50C, but they’ll last longer in colder temperatures.The standard rating of a USB Type A connector is only 1500 plug/unplug cycles. This should never be an issue for any USB stick you’re using for longer term storage, as you’d like to use those drives just once. But it’s a consideration if you have a drive you’re using every day. And of course, that’s a rating — you could find your real-world life is more or less than the USB specification.Real World ExamplesYou don’t have to take my word for it, either: a drive, whether USB, SD, or SSD should offer longevity data in the drive’s data sheet. Or in their warranty. However, you’re probably not going to find it mentioned at all for most drives, because the manufacturers don’t warrant data retention. That should tell you a thing or two.Here’s a USB flash drive designed specifically for long life and long retention. This Swissbit drive is SLC, so only charge or no-charge on each memory cell, and it’s rated for 100,000 program/erase cycles. And when new, it’s rated for a 10 year data retention. When at the end of its useful life, though, it’s only rated for a year of data retention. So if you must insist on using USB flash drives for storing imporant things, use a new one and put it right on your shelf. Oh… by the way, the Swissbit 4G SFU24096E3BP2TO-I-DT-121-STD drive is only USB 2.0 and costs $97.58 in single quantities on Digi-Key.For about the same cash, I can buy a PNY Technologies P-FD512ELX-GE Elite-X Fit USB 3.1 flash drive… 128x the storage, and USB 3.1 performance as well. Only one problem: PNY has a one-year warranty for the operation of the device, and absolutely no data retention warranty. None. The JEDEC specifications for NAND flash memory require an SSD in power-off to retain data for one year, in consumer devices, and 3 months, in Enterprise devices, through the life of the device. So yeah, you can expect newer devices to retain data longer. There’s no requirement that the NAND flash memory in your USB stick meet full JEDEC specifications, but major brands most likely do. Those are not the numbers you want, but that is the fact.SanDisk warrants some of their actual USB flash drive hardware for a “Lifetime”, whatever that actually means (30 years in countries that don’t allow lifetime warranties). You would think that might have them offering a data longevity warranty or even an official guideline. Nope, they don’t.Kingston warrants more of their USB flash drive hardware for 5 years, but they don’t have a data retention warranty, either. In fact, they offer this guidance: “Kingston Flash Data Retention: Kingston Flash Storage Devices primarily use MLC/TLC Flash Memory. Data retention on Flash memory is dynamic since the amount of time the memory has been cycled affects data retention. Important information should always be backed up on other media for long-term safekeeping.”And sure, you can hear ancedotal stories of USB flash dongles from 10 or 15 years ago being completely good today. And sure, possible but not likely and absolutely not guaranteed other than on specialty memory like the Swissbit. And the memory chips made 15 years ago were almost certainly more reliable, being both SLC and much larger chips.So, Where to Archive?Well, I’d pick a hard drive over an SSD any day of the week. The magnetic storage on an HDD is extremely robust, likely to last 10–20 years or more, but do check your specific hardware’s data sheets. The problem is, you’re dependent on the mechanical bits of the drive tolerating that 10 year sit. You may be fine, or you may be subject to “stiction” problems, where lubricants get sticky over the years and prevent a normal spin-up.My long-term medium of choice is Blu-ray, with qualifications. The minimum you want is “HTL” Blu-ray. The original Blu-ray formulation starts out shiny, and the laser melts a bit of silicon and copper together, forming a less reflective material that’s stable against sunlight. Avoid “LTH” discs, which use dyes similar to those used on CD-R and DVD-R.Even better is M-Disc, a proprietary non-organic HTL disc using a material engineered specifically for longevity. The disc is even HTL for the DVD-R version, one reason it needs a special drive to burn it… regular CD-R and DVD-R is always LTH…. the laser is making the dye layer clear, allowing the reflection layer through. M-Disc is described as “glassy carbon”, it’s unaffected by oxygen — the enemy of the aluminum layer in a CD-R or DVD-R — and rated for 1,000 years life. Even if that’s an exaggeration, if that’s not effectively “forever” for me, then I’m certain all my old media will be stored in 0.001% of my positronic brain upgrade. But this also points out a universal truth — nothing is forever and under every circumstance. There’s no such thing as “waterproof”, you only have degrees of water resistance. There’s no such thing as “timeproof”, you only have degrees of time/entropy resistance.You can also consider managed archival… online storage. Storing things in the cloud, you will get the slight benefit of enterprise-level hardware, perhaps. But what you’re really getting is active data management. You’re paying that company to mind your data, replace drives (on a RAID, of course) before they fail, etc. I never would have considered this a year ago when I was on satellite internet at 12Mb/s and low data caps, but today I’m on a gigabit no data caps. So it’s an actual option for some.UPDATE: After I wrote this, I did self-examine my former stance on online backup. I was not a fan, because it was slow, expensive, and based on your faith in the company still being around when Godzilla stomps on your house. But I did some research and signed up for a trial backup with a cloud backup company, and then paid the annual low flat-fee. So we’ll see. This service has very little user interaction.Their main purpose is backing up media, not making an archive of your HDD, which is my main concern. So they don’t back up program installs. They automatically scanned 1,882,572 files worthy of backup, at 13,454,758 MB. They have so far backed up all but 25,522 files, but those files compries 10,288,725 MB of data. I started this three weeks ago, and I’m on gigabit fiber to the internet. So the throttling is probably intentional, and not unexpected. Nearly everything they’re achiving will never change at my end, so ones is enough.Now, of course, if Godzilla did stomp my house, I would not relish the idea of spending several months downloading my stuff. This company will provide all that data on 8GB hard drives… so two drives and I’m good. Not terribly expensive, particularly compared to my house and all my meat-space stuff. At some point, I’ll probably update this again.Rot and RedundancyNo matter what you do, you’re subject to data loss. The best archival medium is redundancy. When I store my photos on those pricey BDXL M-Discs, I write overlapped… so half of the last backup goes onto the next backup. Every photo is on at least two discs. And my RAID. And my backup HDD.I have recently added online backup, once I found a service without data limits. But even with a fast internet connection to the home, this can be a crazy slow process. I started about a week ago and it’s maybe 2TB archived out of around 13TB of data. If you’re paying a per-data fee, it gets expensive, fast.While SSDs can show data rot in a few years, HDDs and tape certainly can as well. I shot analog video in 1994 on high quality tape that was showing rot by 2008 (multiple playings on different 8mm decks got it all converted to digital). Some of the old CDs we made in the early 1990s are still good, some of the CDs and DVDs I made in the later 1990s and early 2000s are dead. Particularly for anything using organic dyes, both light and heat are your long-term enemies.Then there’s format rot. I backed up onto TR-4 tapes in the 1990s. It wouldn’t matter if the tape’s good if I can’t find a compatible drive. Or a PATA hard drive for that matter… you can probably still find a PATA interface, but your modern PC may not have one. One of the best reasons for CD/DVD/BD is the fact it’s a consumer format, not just a computer format… that’s the primary reason the discs stayed upward compatible over three decades and counting. But will that last? UHD Blu-ray is out, with 66GB and 100GB discs, based on the same tech used in BDXL, so that is a consumer format. But it’ll never be as popular as HD Blu-ray, which isn’t as popular as DVD. Will we have another consumer optical upgrade? But I digress…So archive often, on different media, and in different places. That’s the only way to prevent data loss for certain. And flash drives are cheap, but not archive-grade. She offered me semester long internship in GS! I was glad that I don’t have to spend my last semester in college and will also earn some money. With the stipend as high as 75k and stay at Hilton hotel during intern, anybody is likely to go crazy and say “YES”.And so I did.The beginning (GS-Bengaluru office)Soon came 7th January. Day started off with amazing orientation and office visit. Then came the lunch buddy - GS assigns a buddy from your department to have lunch with you the day you join, let’s say he was Raghav (name changed).Raghav seemed to be a really smart guy. I asked him a few questions about GS being a fin-tech, is it easy to switch and other questions. He seemed to be out of place, not interested. A guy came who was an intern in a team in which Raghav used to work. He kept talking and giggling with him, completely ignoring my presence. Okay, tell me one thing - it does have all the components you require, right?”“Yes, Rudra” I sighed.“Seems like Shilpi wanted to use material-ui, haha” Rudra giggled and looked at Varun. I could hear the giggling from one if the two interns from behind - Tejas (name changed).He was also working on a UI, along with some backend stuff. He was using ‘gs-ui-library’ from day one. And so, he giggled.Rudra -1 .. Shilpi - 0This was the first time I went home feeling sad. Why didn’t they tell me 2 weeks ago? Now I will have to work on the other one. And the library has no documentation.Next week , Varun decided to keep the name as “ELEGENT-USERS-APP”. He refused Rudra.Varun -1.. Varun was happy that I had completed the integration part and added 2 more features to implement.- feature1 & feature2Before the demo, we had a meeting with Monica just a week before. Rudra, Varun and I gathered in a room.“So Shilpi, how’s the work going? Are you liking it - the UI stuff? Aren’t you bored?” Rudra asked.“Hehe.. Actually yeah it’s a little boring. I hope backend stuff starts soon!” I honestly replied.“You know UI people make the most money.” Rudra smirked.“No, that’s a lie. Backend people make more money.” I replied.“Shilpi, that’s the case of technical firms. In financial firms like us, UI people earn more bonus.” said Varun.Soon came Monica. Varun and Monica proceeded on what she wants and what actually we have. It was a debate between them and I listened.Since the lunch time was over, Rudra and I went to the food-court outside to have one.“Shilpi, you know I was like you. The silent guy in the room. I had no idea why, I was using an excellent library for feature1, of-course an external one. Varun himself has asked me to use an external for that case since we don’t have a gs library for that.But now. It wasn’t working.It took me a week to include the library - react-bootstrap-table2 with the project along with the features it had, and use it. And some magic happened. Now feature1 stops working. Damn!I woke up the whole night - till 4 am to make the feature1 work. The remote desktop worked very slow. In GS, we are not given laptops for security purposes. So we have to use remote desktop.It was damn slow but I was patient. I kept on trying and trying till I fell asleep early in the morning. Woke up around 12.An hour before demo with Monica’s team, I told Varun about it. He said it’s fine, we will show the demo without it.Tik…tikk….I wasn’t satisfied. I worked damn hard for 45 min and was able to make feature1 work!We went to give the demo. Varun pulled out a chair and sat before a PC.“Hi Monica!”“Hey Varun!”And so it started. The demo. The UI I made. The features I implemented. The integration. My two month’s hard work.All of them was presented by our VP, Mr.Varun!“Uhm…but we don’t need feature 1 and 2, Varun. Instead of giving proper review comments, he changed my code by himself. Some backend stuff also came to me.I fetched the code from repo, the one Varun had implemented. And tried to understand.“You just have to implement feature-b-xyz, no need to go through whole code” he said.Fine.I added a new feature. Compiled and checked. Everything was working fine. Committed the code.Next day I came. Compiled the code.‘EXCEPTION THROWN’‘FAILED’And my PC hangs. For no reason why.I checked the code - it was changed. The integration part was changed. Feature XYZ was changed. And it stopped working.~Varun committed the code an hour ago~Why did he commit a code that fails? I wondered.This started happening daily. I had no idea why was this happening.The next series of days started with me coming late - 11:50, 12 or later than that. I used to mail Rudra about the update. Sometimes I was able to attend standup, sometime I wasn’t able to. My health started deteriorating.Everyday, Varun used to commit some changes. And it took a hell lot of time to update the project in intellij, go through his changes and do other changes. I was pretty much frustrated.Took 2 wfhs in 2 weeks. Logged in late many times. Had to push myself from bed everyday. Devoted my time to video games than gs work. Lost interest.Then I was given some backend part. I took WFH a day I wasn’t feeling well and learnt about apis stuff. Still some part of me wanted to do well and take interest in the work genuinely.We - all 3 interns received a mail from Rudra which we could never forget. Rudra had showed his ‘Rudra’ roop. The mail said -“You guys are not taking the work seriously. WFHs are not to be taken for granted. So many WFHs and late loggings. Not at all serious about your work. You guys need to have deliverables by the end of this month.I don’t care, work for your career not mine.”I was shocked. The friendly, giggling Rudra! I remembered the first time I met him. She was mentoring an intern and sounded quite knowledgeable. Her sudden decision of leaving GS came as a shock to everyone.I had a last chat with her only when everyone was away for lunch. She had refused her farewell too I guess. She came to me and we had a decent chat. I asked her the reason of leaving. She wanted to switch the team maybe but it was taking a long time. Sweet and smart is all I could say for her. She had done work with JPMC & Morgan Stanley (US) and held a green card. A dedicated worker.After the lunch, she had a long meeting with Rudra. She was too firm with her decision.After she left, someone told me she bitched about many people in the team - specially Rudra. I was really sad. GS lost a good employee that day. And maybe, due to politics.Next day, GS was having an orientation for all new campus hires. It was one hell of a day. World-class hotel stay and world-class orientation.Varun was going out to the new office for 2 weeks. For some work.4th monthBefore Varun had left for the new office, he had asked me to attend telephonic standups for our team from 3–3:30. Now I used to attend 2 standups - the department one, and the team one. Full time waste activities!He had also asked me to get details of a task from Raghav and get it completed. I messaged him and he said he will be there at my desk in 5 min. Well, he never came. I asked him 2–3 times more to which he sent me a random link. I was disheartened and had nothing to do for 2 weeks.One day Rudra called me to fix some errors which he wasn’t able to fix by himself. He said he spent the whole night trying to fix those but didn’t know how to.I came to his desk. Those were linting errors!After having 10 years of experience, and you don’t even know what they are! Even if you know, please try to google. He was not getting what those line numbers represent. I explained him everything and fixed those.Soon, we got mails from hr regarding our joining dates and NAPA training, which is held in New York. I told the HR about my case, that I have courses left in college and I won’t be able to join on 3rd june.“Can I go to the training and join later after 12th july - when my courses are done” I asked.“No, you need to join as FTE. We will process your visa in june and you’ll go during july first week”“Okay” I replied.“Try to make your college understand, it’s important” is all she said.Next day, I refused. My college will never agree for me to take 2 week vacation during summer term.Rudra received a call from HR. I was shocked. Again.Rudra was the most unpredictable mysterious guy I ever met. He was good and bad, at the same time. 2 months is a long time - and he agreed to give me WFH! He earned my respect.Then there was second meeting with Rudra. He told me everything - the work I’ll do as an FTE. Also, he never left a single moment he could get to brag about himself.“You will be working under Varun. He will be the team lead. Your work is XYZ-AHSH-PPOS…..”“Be as mature as me. Even during our team standups over calls, he used to answer when some guy asked me about the project. My code was changed everyday. All the torture I faced last month. Wow.I told Rudra - how my code was changed everyday, how I was not told about the changes Varun did in the backend and still expected my code would run successfully. He listened to me for a while and then said -“When I was a NAPA, I used to ensure that I get 0 review comments”“I don’t get review comments, Rudra. My code gets changed, and it’s hard to understand it everyday without help of Varun.”“It’s a good thing, right? You will learn something from what the change he does. It’s good for you.”Cool. I have to look at the new code and somehow “learn without doing”. Interesting.I worked till 9 pm that day. Before Rudra left, he smiled at me sarcastically.“Shilpi, still working?”“Yeah Rudra, I came little late today.”“Varun changing your code and you changing his code.!”“Yes. That’s what is happening.”And then, he laughed maniacally.This was not the first time he did this. He used to laugh at me sarcastically many times after giving me the UI project.Next week, Varun was here. My virtual desktop was not working and I had no idea why. Called help-desk 5 times that day.“REBOOT!”“TRY IT FROM A DIFFERENT MACHINE!”“IT SHOWS ‘AVAILABLE’ ON MY MACHINE!”was all the response I got from 5 different help-desk-assistants.Took a day off the next day. Help-desk people failed miserably.I tried remote desktop and was able to open my outlook. My inbox was full of -“DISK CAPACITY OVER 95%! CLEAN IT!”I got it. But in order to clean it, I had to login to the virtual computer which I wasn’t able to. It was a deadlock.Soon I was assigned a new virtual computer. My whole local setup - was erased.My whole enthusiasm had turned to ashes at that point. Came late, went early. Stopped attending stand-ups. Late Loggings. WFHs. OOO. No updates. No weekly updates. Nothing to do next since Raghav didn’t help. Frustrated as hell.Our department was hiring more and more people. I had nowhere to sit. No one to talk to.The only friend I had in bengaluru left 2 weeks ago.Please note that I’ve nothing against GS. The management there is really good, they care about their employees. I don’t think any company could’ve given me 2 months WFH and I do respect Rudra a lot for that!The experience may vary from person to person, someone may find GS a very good place, based on the traits he/she has or the team he is working with. But for a shy person like me, who loves to code sitting at the corner of the room - GS is not the place. Varun probably gave her false information about me.“No, I was there for 3 of them” I replied in a low voice.“And you weren’t allowed to give?” She raised her eyebrows.“I didn’t ask him, neither did he offer.. he just took the chair and..Did Varun said I was absent? I wasn’t!” I defended myself.“Oh yes you weren’t, I know. When did I say you were absent? You are just misunderstanding me” she replied and wrote down some points.And now she started lying too about things she said earlier! I was shocked to the core.“They said bad things about me, didn’t they.” I asked.“No, infact they praised you for technical aspects. ‘She did all her tasks which we assigned.’ ‘Used to find solutions of the problem till the very end.’” she read it from the paper she had.But what about the other aspects? I was sure they had said something worse about me. I wondered what was that except me coming late.“GS-UI-LIBRARY!!” she exclaimed.“This is what you wrote about the library. Seriously!”I looked down. That’s what she meant.“I have already deleted it , Devika. I said sorry, what else can I do? ” I almost cried.“These things never happened with me at signNow. But people here..”I broke down. Why didn’t he himself fire me instead of sending a rude HR. And those two also lied a lot about me. The tone of HR was totally different when I met her on Thursday. And today she was really harassing me.It took me a while to understand - all this was planned by Rudra. He choose the rudest and senior-most HR to deal with my case and harass me, just to get back at me.2 interns were joining today and space was very less in the small GIR cabin. And he knew very well I completed all my work the last week itself. Win-Win situation for Rudra!Varun and Rudra lied to HR. It was evident from the way she treated me. I was made to be feel like a garbage - just because I was late at the office!I cried for an hour. And then, I edited and restored this answer.Next day I came to know none of the interns or people in my team knew about this! I was fired secretly. How do I become a great voice actor?
Well, you can start by becoming a good actor, which is not exactly an overnight process. I don't know where you are located, but there's probably a decent acting teacher or group class in your area. There are several acting techniques that are popular now (e.g. Meisner, Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler, etc.) and it doesn't much matter which one you use. The key points are: learning how to "be truthful under imaginary circumstances," and developing the ability to make strong character choices and committing to them. As one of my teachers put it: "A trained actor makes choices; an untrained actor makes guesses."Classes in improv are also invaluable. They will help you switch between different approaches to your character if the client or director or casting agent is looking for something different from what you initially offer them. Beyond learning general acting skills, there are other skills specific to voice acting, whether it's acting for advertising, animation, audiobooks, voice mail systems, corporate narration, e-learning, trailers and promos, "explainer" web videos, etc. For that you should find a respected coach, someone with whom you can study either in person or remotely (e.g. phone or Skype). A word to the wise: there are many less-than-reputable companies out there, who will gladly take your money and promise you all kinds of impossible things ("In just four easy lessons, you'll be ready to record a professional demo that will have agents falling all over themselves to sign you up!"). Ask for references, check out online discussion boards to see if they have a sleazy reputation, and--smartest move of all--join the World-Voices Organization, Inc. (WoVO). A reputable coach would not even think of letting you record a demo until you both agree you're ready, which may be many months down the line. Your demo, by the way, is absolutely the most important tool you have for getting an agent. Nobody in this business will ever ask you for a CV. They want to hear what you can do with your voice, and that's exactly what a good demo is for. It's a whole subject in itself, and thus outside the scope of this answer. But if you remember nothing else, know that recording an amateurish demo is the surest way to sabotage your career before it's even begun.Other (free) things to do: read aloud every single day. It doesn't matter if it's a morning newspaper (if you still have one of those), a magazine ad, or a passage from a novel off your bookshelf. Get used to the sound of your own voice--in fact, record some of these reading sessions. You can use the "voice memos" app on your smartphone for starters. If you're like most people, you won't initially like how you sound--don't worry, you'll get over it. Try reading the same passage several times, but with a different underlying emotion each time. If you have an ear for dialects, try them out too. Read as if you're a child, a teenager, middle-aged or elderly (one of the great advantages of voice acting over the "regular" kind is that your biological age is much less important than your ability to convincingly portray a character at any age--that and no head shots required!). Read as if you're a dog, a donkey, or an inanimate object (for some projects I've voiced a police whistle and a recycling bin, as well as playing cats, parrots and a variety of aliens). See if you can create a full-fledged character and mood that you can maintain for the entire piece. When you listen back, it should be glaringly obvious if your concentration has faltered and your character has slipped. All voice acting--even if it's narrating the most boring medical narration you can imagine--involves getting into a character and making it sound like you're speaking your very own thoughts, thoughts that have just now spontaneously popped into your head. If it sounds instead like you're reading something off a page (even though that is, of course, exactly what you're doing!), you've failed. Reading without sounding like you're reading is a lot harder than it sounds, but it's truly the indispensable skill in all of voice acting. Your initial efforts are sure to sound pretty laughable. But don't erase them. Come back every few weeks to an older effort, especially one that you thought was pretty good at the time. If you're progressing and your ear is getting more sophisticated, you should be able to hear the flaws. A key goal that should be the end result of all this training, but that is often overlooked, is finding your own voice. Nobody cares if you can do a spot-on Sponge Bob or Donald Duck or Stewie--those positions have already been filled. What they don't have is you. There's no easy way to achieve this. It's something that will take time. But if you can get there, an agent will sit bolt upright when listening to your demo and think "Holy crap! We don't have one of those!" Understand that voice acting, like all acting, is a business as well as a vocation. You have to absolutely know deep down that this is what you want to do, come hell or high water. You'll have to spend a great deal of time, effort and (yes) money just to get your skills up to anything resembling a professional level. And once you're there--you'll need to train even more! And while the initial outlay for a home recording studio is nowhere near as expensive as it used to be, you'll still need the basics: computer, microphone (and an interface between the two), as well as some basic sound treatment for your recording environment. There's free recording software (for example, Audacity) that is available for any OS. But understand that eventually you'll need to upgrade each component, which can be quite expensive indeed. And no matter how good an actor you may become, it will mean nothing if you don't learn how to run a business (Now that's a whole subject in itself!). Most of your time will not be spent acting, but instead on hustling to find people to hire you, and networking like mad. Are you a shy introvert? That's fine (you'd be surprised how many actors are!), but realize that you'll never get anywhere unless you can push past the shyness and put yourself out there so the world can see (and hear) you. This is where the majority of voice actors get discouraged and end up quitting. Like most freelancing jobs, your business will have peaks and valleys, and at the beginning the peaks will be few and far between. But if you're truly committed to this, setbacks and dry spells will not be enough to deter you. If you're willing to do all that, you might just be able to become a good (and working) voice actor. Then, if you work with great people, never stop learning, and be generous to those around you, there's even a minuscule chance that you could someday be a great one! Good luck!

How do I bulk send or migrate all my books and documents to my new Kindle?
Anything that helps save me time is worth my time. When you have over 300 books in one e-reader device — like I do on my Kindle — you cannot afford to migrate one book at a time unless it is absolutely necessary. There IS a way to deliver all your books to your new Kindle device which even the Amazon Customer Service are not trained in or do not think of. I had two of them tell me it is “not possible”. Read to the end to find out how!Basics of Books vs. DocsIt’s no secret Amazon wants you to buy all your books from them. So your ebooks purchased online from Amazon are called “Books”. All your other readings, books, PDFs and .mobi files are called “Docs”. You must send these Docs to Amazon Cloud, NOT your Kindle device (more on that soon).If you buy all your ebooks through Amazon, your books will be displayed on, but not downloaded into, your Kindle device. Your books will not automatically “sync” across devices in the sense of having them downloaded and ready to read offline. If you don’t have many purchases, you can just download by clicking on each book: each one gets “queued” for download; when download finishes, the book title gets a black “tick” next to it indicating it’s ready for offline reading.If you have many non-Amazon books (called “Docs”) which you wish to migrate to your new Kindle device, then follow my time-saving productivity tips (which Amazon Customer Service may disagree with!):#1 First of all, whatever you do, DON’T transfer your Docs from your computer into your Kindle device using a USB cable! Why? Because those Docs will be trapped “in prison” in your device. They will not sync to your Cloud, other devices or Kindle app. You cannot access your notes and highlights outside of the device. They will NOT be saved for future devices. When you buy a new Kindle, those docs and their notes and highlights will go to the grave with your own Kindle.For a reader like me who studies as I read, that’s a big loss. I once found out the hard way by doing a software update which erased all my highlights. Amazon’s customer service assured me all highlights will be saved, but it turns out not if the Docs were transferred by USB cable.#2 Make sure all your Docs are stored in the Amazon Cloud. The way to do this is to send them from a pre-approved email account to your unique email@kindle.com. Follow these steps to set up the emails:Sign in to your Amazon account. Make sure it’s the Amazon in your country. For us in Australia it is Amazon dot com dot au: Shop online for Electronics, Apparel, Toys, Books, DVDs & moreUnder your Profile, click open the dropdown menu and select “Manage Your Content and Devices”Select “Preferences”Scroll down to bottom and click “Personal Documents Settings”You will find both “Send-to-Kindle E-mail Settings” and “Approved Personal Document E-mail List”. Follow the prompts and set up your emails.#3 Once your emails are set up, send your documents to your Amazon Cloud using your unique Kindle.com email.TIP: if you’re sending a PDF which you want optimized for Kindle (to enable you to adjust font size, highlight text, etc), put in the subject the word “convert” and nothing else. This service is “experimental” and Amazon does not guarantee all PDFs will convert properly.TIP 2: If you have a Kindle model that has 3G, Amazon may charge you for receiving documents to your Kindle.com email via 3G. If you can wait, do it over Wifi.PRO TIP: if you know how to convert your PDF to .mobi first, you can send a .mobi file to your unqiue Kindle.com email without the need for conversion. I found 80% of my PDFs convert fine via email with subject “convert”.#4 Once all your Books and Docs are on Amazon Cloud, you CAN bulk deliver all the ebooks to your Kindle device!Go back to “Manage Your Content and Devices”.Select the first option “Content”.On the left side, you will see “Show” with a dropdown menu.You can show either “Books” or “Docs”, but you cannot show both at the same time. So you will need to do this twice to migrate ALL your ebooks to your device.Under “Select” tick at least one book, then go up to the button “Select All” and press it. (Pro Tip: if your book list exceeds the browser page, “Select All” does not select all. Scroll down to “show more” and you will see the unselected books.)Go to the button “Deliver” on the left side and press it.It will ask you which device you want to “Deliver” the ebooks you just ticked. Your default device appear first. Choose and click.
