What are the types of off page SEO?
Nice question. Inspite of all algorithm updates and penalty by Google, doing off-page SEO still takes its value and brings benefits.Submitting is easy ; but gaining high authority links based on your website theme is hard.Let’s forget about the basic stuffs that worked in the past, here i am going to share few tactics and tips to get you suceed with your off-page SEO project.Note :I’ve excluded .edu link building and guest posting from the list, since intentional backlinks are gained from these tactics are becoming less signNow.And I haven’t talked about social media marketing and Q&A that are the most discussed here.Don’t trust all directories/ yellow pages / classified ads!Even the most legit directory Dmoz is shut down.Don’t ever go for directory submissions, unless if you’re submitting to location based directories or niche directories.Google has penalized lots of directories and be aware before submitting to any. It’s like getting ourselves fall in trap and it finally makes you to disavow such links. Before submitting to local/niche directories, try searching it through Google using site command. If you can’t find any results, then it’s certainly penalized. The same applies to yellow pages or classified ads submissions. As google algorithm is getting rolled all the time, these sites are in extreme danger of getting affected. We should be wise and alerted enough to stop ourselves from getting into it.PDF / PPT / Image sharing sites always take their prominenceWhen you notice through your search console, you could see the list of ppt and pdf files that are bringing you organic traffic. This can’t be shown in Google analytics, however you could add them as events for PDF / PPT click tracking.Did you know you can optimize your PDF files for search? The same can be done in PPT as well. All you need to do is to -> Go to file -> Properties -> EditEdit the necessary SEO properties like filenames, title, description, keywords and so on to optimize it for organic search. Also, it bring out visibility, submit it to sites like SlideShare.net , Scribd - Read books, audiobooks, and more and so on.Share all the images you product to Flickr, a Yahoo company, Photobucket - Photo and image hosting, free photo galleries, photo editing and all image sharing sites with linkback to your website to get more visibility in google image search.Content re-purpose:Write one content - either a blog or a white paper.Repurpose to all possible formats and do off-page promotion.Blog promotion - Submit to blog directoriesConvert it into ppt - Promote to slideshare like sitesConvert it into PDF - Promote to PDF sharing sitesConvert it into e-book - Promote it to bookmarking sites. Also helps in lead generationConvert it into video - Promote it to youtube, vimeoWrite different snippets, almost 10 combinations (~1000 words) about the e-book and use it to promote in the above platforms. You need to add elaborate description to get your youtube videos, slideshare ppt and images to rank best in the search engines.Content republishing:Content re-publishing is the most effective tactic to gain backlinks, establish brand awareness and build followers in many platforms. Some of the most popular re-publishing platforms are Medium – Read, write and share stories that matter, Linkedin pulse, google plus and so on.In medium, you can find an option as “Import story” to republish your already published content.Though there’s no such option in LinkedIn pulse, you can add “Orignally published in {YOUR BLOG LINK”} at the end of the blog.Just republishing in these platforms are not enough.Your content should provide quality enough to get it picked by LinkedIn editors. They will move your post to the respective channels with thousands of followers on it.Another hack to get recognized by linkedin editors is to send a tweet marking “tip @LinkedInEditors”Similarly, there are lots of channels in medium as well. Contact the admin and get your blog to be featured, if it really deserves it.Gain high authority backlinks:There are lots of ways you can get / grab high quality backlinks from.(i) HARO:HARO is the place where press requests for quotes / ideas. On getting your quote approved, you’ll get a valid high authority backlink and brand awareness too. Here’s a sample queryWhat you get in return is something like the screenshot below.Steps to do -> Just sign up with Help A Reporter to get press requests right to your inbox.(ii) Citation checking :This is a simple, but a quick way to gain backlinks.Go to google alertsSet up an alert for your brand name and its modifications (space, common misspellings etc)You’ll receive alerts to your inbox.Keep monitoring it daily and if you find any brand name unlinked, all you have to do is contact the author and get a valid backlink to your website.Simple right? Here’s a sample email template.(iii) Broken / dead link building:Find out your broken / lost backlinks.Go to SEO Backlink Checker & Competitor Research Tools and check the backlinks reportYou could find the ones that are dead now. It’s easy to get link from an already linked site than to convince a new website for backlink. If you really find this post useful, show your like by upvoting this :-)

What is the best LMS from instructional designers point of view?
I'd like to preface my answer by saying that first and foremost, a good LMS MUST be learner-centric. Most enterprise Learning Management Systems I've experienced have been so anti-learner that my pessimism towards Learning Management Systems have increased greatly over the years.Since this question is centered around the instructional designer, I will focus on that perspective. Before I move on, I want to briefly discuss my own definition of an instructional designer since many organizations have different expectations of what an instructional designer does.My definition: An instructional designer designs learning experiences that solves learning problems and drives a positive change in learner behavior and performance.Certain misconceptions pigeonhole roles of instructional designers, resulting in instructional designers only doing certain tasks. These tasks should be part of an instructional designer's toolbox, but their role and value should be much larger. These misconceptions include:Writing storyboards/scripts for elearningProducing videoDeveloping elearing using rapid development tools like Articulate or CaptivateCreating PowerPoint presentationsWith that out of the way, I'd like to guess that the best LMS from an instructional designer's point of view does not yet exist. Although we're getting closer, especially with strides made with Experience API, most Learning Management Systems I've used still uses an outdated paradigm of organizational learning (i.e. SCORM/AICC/Learning Object/Content-focused learning). Learning should be about people and not technology or content.A good Learning Management System from an instructional designer's perspective should possess a few elements:Tracking of Learner Behavior - If the goal is to improve behavior or performance, it's critical to know how our learning experience is affecting our learners both inside and outside of a learning event.Providing Feedback - Providing and receiving feedback is key to a learner's development. This is actually the spark that creates the "Ah-Ha" moments that makes learning effective. I'm not talking about canned feedback. Learners need real feedback from real peers and experts in order to reinforce productive behaviors or correct mistakes.Applying Learning - Learning takes practice. Lots of it. We need ways to make mistakes and learn from those mistakes. We need ways to apply what we learned in real world context with real world consequences and benefits. While most Learning Management Systems don't address all if any of those three points, I've seen smaller LMS companies attempt to get there. Hopefully one day an organization can apply Experience API the right way to create a paradigm shift in learning management so that the general expectation of a Learning Management System is no longer: upload content, track completion, and report completion.

What should I know about pitch decks?
They are a pain in the ass to do. Bigger pain in the ass to do well. A lot of n00bs don’t put in nearly the work they need toIt’s easier to write if you REALLY know your business in and outIgnore the Sequoia capital business plan template - Yes, the 12 slides are some of the things that you need to talk about, but it does so much damage to founders as they try copy itSame goes for Aibnb’s deck. They were clueless when they did it! They changed M to B in their market sizing slide as Sam Altman told them to… Airbnb pitch deck at seed stage investment -If you want to see decks. Here is the collection. Collection of pitch decks from venture capital funded startups . I generally think the most valuable learnings are from Front Series-A and Series-B. You can learn about thinking from the Linkedin one. For fintech I like Standard TreasuryA deck that covers everything is 17–22 slidesIf you want to learn best practice to write slides, see the format I invented here: Custom pitch deck examples - Perfect Pitch Deck. I’ve done a crap tonne of decks, so just trust meContent matters more than design. Deck can be ugly if content is great so prioritize thatBut don’t do these bad things: 35 ways on how to make a pitch deck from what not to do -The deck only is there to get you a meeting. Only need to say enough for VC to say “hmmm, interesting, I want to know more”. So don’t say everything and write an essayStructure information. Don’t write walls of text. No one wants to read itFocus on the headlines to tell a narrative (see my examples). These are really key. Pitch deck flick test. The test to know if venture capitalists will respond -The body of content backs up the headerDon’t request a VC to sign and NDA to see your deck (Ever) Non disclosure agreements (NDA) for startup fundraising don’t matter, so don’t sign nda -VCs want to see your deck before a meeting. Why I want a pitch deck before a pitchLess is more, unless less is your excuse for being lazy!Send your deck in PDF not PPT. You can use signNow, but VCs prefer PDFIf you progress in process, if VC asks for your deck in PPT that’s ok. They often will use your deck to rip out slides to use for internal presentation purposesYour friends don’t know how to write a deck (and neither do VCs). People do know what a bad deck is though so you can listen to feedback once you have written itThere are people who can help you write a deck, but there are not many that know what they are doingDon’t use powerpoint templates for design… Simple is betterUse data. I don’t trust you but I can trust dataNever use slide animations. Waste of timeUse wide screen format (16:9)If you have a lot of slides which are interesting, but not core, make an ‘information deck’ which you can give to investors once they are interested in learning more

What are the advantages and disadvantages of Apple Keynote?
Pros -Better looking presentations. If you use Keynote, I feel it’s easier to achieve a very professional and unique looking presentation that will keep your audiences engaged and impressed.I find it to be easier to do what it is I imagine I want to do in a presentation using Keynote as compared to something like Microsoft’s Powerpoint. It feels like it’s quicker to use.Cons -It’s not Powerpoint, so compatibility can sometimes hit you very hard when you’re forced to use another computer for the presentation, and it’s not a Mac or if it is, it has an older version of Keynote that’s also not compatible. You can export the presentation to Powerpoint, but the resulting mess can sometimes be worse than using crayons on sheets of paper. (Exaggerating here a little, but you get my point.)In summary -I believe that Keynote is a program that doesn’t suffer from Powerpoint’s legacy support needs, so they were able to take advantage of new programming and UI styles to bring about a new way of doing presentations. Apple people had the opportunity to look at the problems with older approaches and come up with something new. They were also able to take advantage of some newer programming techniques and hardware capabilities in newer Macs, so that has benefits too. I personally love using it to create presentations, and somehow they always look 10X better than anything done on a PC with Powerpoint, and you can immediately tell from the first slide onwards. However, the compatibility issue is real and everpresent. Invariably, if it’s not the boardroom PC running Windows being the computer you are forced to use, you’re going to get someone asking you for a copy of the presentation, and you’re then going to have to struggle to export it into Powerpoint, open in Powerpoint and finesse it so that it’s again presentable, so you end up more or less doing it twice.

Has anyone seen good examples of templates for startups to provide monthly email investor updates, e.g., KPI?
At the seed stage I like brief updates that contain:Some bullet points on progress, plan, and problems (AKA PPP) in key areas like product/tech, sales/marketing and hiringKey metricsWhich metrics to include depends on the type of business. For high-velocity low-touch sales SaaS models (AKA rabbit or deer hunters) I like to see numbers for the top of the funnel, bottom of the funnel, churn, MRR movements, and cash. Specifically:Top of the funnelVisits (to the marketing site)New trialsVisit-to-trial conversion rateBottom of the funnel (and churn)New paying customersTrial-to-paying conversion rateLost customersChurn rateNet new customersTotal customersMRR movementsNew MRRLost MRRMRR churn rateNet new MRRTotal MRRCashCash burnCash in the bankFor all metrics I always like to see not only the last month’s numbers but the development over the last six months or so. Makes it much easier to see the trend. For enterprise SaaS (AKA elephant or whale hunters) I’m mostly interested in pipeline development, i.e. the number and $ value of all opportunities across all pipeline stages. For example, assuming you’re working with four pipeline stages:# of deals and $ value in “prospect” stage vs. previous month# of deals and $ value in “evaluation” stage vs. previous month# of deals and $ value in “proposal” stage vs. previous month# of deals and $ value in “negotiation” stage vs. previous month# of deals and $ value of closed/won deals and lost/purged deals[also see: A better way to visualize pipeline development? (WIP)]Regarding the layout/format of the investor update, it doesn’t really matter – it can be an email, a Google Doc or a few slides. As Jason points out, it’s important that it needs to be simple. Creating the update should take founders just a very small amount of time because they should report on exactly those numbers that they are monitoring on a daily basis anyway.Lastly, for later-stage startups, things are a little different – you focus more on actuals vs. plan, achievement of quarterly targets, and so on, but at that time you probably have a CFO to help you with this kind of stuff!
