Select e-PAN using which you’ll receive a PDF version of your PAN card in your email. * Add only your mobile number next and don’t add address as it’s only meant to be filled in case you need a change. * There will be a declaration on the next page - once you complete it you’ll require to complete the document verification part. What is an experience you had at a car dealership you’ll never forget?
In 2004, I was in an accident in my 2003 Dodge Dakota. While it was at the body shop, I rented a 2004 Ford F-150 in its place. I was in love from that moment! So in August of 2006, when it was finally time to replace the Dakota (it was at 99K and had already needed a complete new rear-end, thankfully under warranty), I wanted to get out while the getting was good. I set off looking for my dream F-150. There was a 2006 model year-end deal I was aiming for, including very low interest financing. I submitted a pricing request through my credit union - I submitted to 5 dealerships. Only heard back from one right away… a Ford dealership in an affluent suburb of Seattle, about 25 miles from where I lived. In their reply e-mail, they told me they had a 2006 model that met all my specs and then some. The price was well below invoice based on my prior research. They gave me 3 days to accept the deal. I replied via e-mail within the hour that I’d take the deal. I immediately called down and spoke to their fleet manager, saying I accepted the deal. The fleet manager said he was just running out the door, but that he’d call me Saturday so I could come down and sign the papers. My phone was silent all day Saturday, so I called the dealership in the afternoon. They said the fleet manager hadn’t been in but would be again on Monday, and I needed to wait for him. So Monday morning, I called and spoke to him. He said the truck wasn’t in their inventory and had been “sold out from under us.” So he sent me specs a different truck. One with way fewer features - missing many of my requirements, but for the same price quoted. I immediately replied that this was not the deal I accepted, and I was still in the specified time period to accept the original deal. He said, “oh jeez, we made a mistake with that first deal… so that’s not going to work. You’re going to have to take this deal if you want to buy this truck from us.” Then he sent a copy of the PDF file they had gotten from my credit union. He had carefully edited out some of the options I had originally requested. The options were in a comma delineated list, so it was plainly obvious he’d just edited the PDF. He claimed that’s what he got from my credit union. So needless to say, I didn’t buy the under specified substitution truck, and I told him I was not even remotely happy with the situation. So I contacted my credit union, who dutifully sent a copy of the PDF that was sent to the dealership. Of course I could see all the stuff he edited out and claimed to have never seen. I was floored by the situation at that time… so I wrote a letter explaining the entire situation, including the doctored and original PDFs, explaining that I felt I had been bait-and-switched by the dealership. I sent that letter to Ford corporate, the dealer, the dealer’s parent company, the BBB, the state attorney general and my credit union. I mailed it to all recipients via registered mail, return receipt required, knowing it would get their attention. A couple days later, I got a call from the fleet manager at the dealership. He was furious. “How dare you accuse us of bait and switch” he yelled. I held my ground. He asked me to come down and meet the manager of the dealership to “See if we could work out a compromise.” I agreed to this and went to the meeting. I explained my position, I showed him documentation that I had been offered a truck with more features than I originally asked for X price, and showed him how his fleet manager had edited the credit union document. I told him for me to leave happy, I wanted the deal I had accepted within their 72 hour time limit. Once everyone calmed down a bit, the manager instructed the fleet manager to go look for trucks that met my complete specs. After about 15 minutes, he came back. Said he couldn’t find a 2006 with the specs I wanted (I was firm on the color - metallic red - because it was my University’s color.) He said I’d have to take another color. I stood firm, and told him, “If you can’t find a 2006 with that color and spec, then fine, I’d be flexible on model year - I’d take a 2007.” He found a 2007 in ruby red metallic, the perfect color for me. So then they started hassling me about the price, and tried to get me to “help them out” by accepting a higher price to cover for their “mistake.” I relented slightly and agreed to pay $1000 more than their original offer (it was still about $7000 below invoice). They agreed to the deal. The truck was delivered to a dealership in Spokane, so they had it driven over for me. It had 293 miles on the clock when I picked up it, but I didn’t really care. I had my beautiful new F-150 with all the features I wanted. And I’m happy to report, as of September 2019, it’s still my daily driver. Just hit 269,000 miles. It’s never left me stranded and only had a few minor mechanical issues over the years. Best vehicle I ever owned… but the worst time I ever had buying a new vehicle!

Will people make fun of me?But I realized: for 100% of the books on my bookshelf, I had no idea who the publisher of that book was.If I did a professional job, got a good cover, edited carefully, and wrote a good book, nobody would suddenly ask, "Well . . . who was the publisher?".And then for the many reasons I list below, I realized my books would be MUCH MORE successful if I self-publish.Self-publishing saved my life, both creatively and professionally.One of my self-published books, "Choose Yourself" is in about 20 countries and has sold over a million copies. Altogether, my self-published books have sold about 2,000,000 copies.Two of my self-published books, "Reinvent Yourself" and "The Choose Yourself Guide to Wealth", hit #1 in the entire Amazon store. Beating every fiction book (even "50 Shades of Grey") and every non-fiction book.I couldn't believe it. A self-published book written by me was #1 in the entire world. I never expected that to happen.I've gotten so many opportunities because of all of these books.And most of all, I got to write whatever I wanted. Nobody could say "No" to me. I honestly hate when people say "No" to me.I want to create my opportunities. Not be dependent on the whims of people I don't know or don't trust.I'm so grateful that now I can share the reasons of why I self-publish and to help others do the same.We don't live in a world of scarcity. Most of your time is not focused on the writing but the business of publishing.You have to pitch an idea to an agent, who pitches to an assistant editor, who pitches to an editor, who pitches to a marketing department, who pitches to a publisher.Then you have to deal with their marketing demands.And you have to wait a year before your book is published because it has to fit on the schedule they send to bookstores.Most bookstores won't even stock your book anyway. They get 2,000,000 possibilities a year and pick 2,000 new books to carry.And even if you are in the bookstore, if your publisher is not 200% behind your book, nobody will see it.Do you know when you see a book facing forward on the shelf, the publisher PAID for that position?Do you know when you see the "Staff Recommendations" shelf, the publisher PAID for that position.Do you when you see the books on the "New Releases" table, the publisher PAID for that position.A simple example: if you go to an airport before your flight and see a book, the publisher paid, minimum (depending on location), $20,000 per month for that book to be there.With self-publishing you can focus on the writing. Write a good book. The best book you can. And publish it.I feel so much joy and creativity now that I am much more in control of the entire process.----MORE MONEYTrue, you won't get an advance. But the average advance is going down anyway. 99% of writers get less than a $10,000 advance for their books.And that advance is spread out over years. You get it in several chunks: 1) When you start the book. 2) When you submit it. 3) When the publisher finishes editing it. 4) Publication date.And then the typical deal with a publisher is they give you 15% of the "wholesale price" - a purely fictional number that is much less than the price you see in the bookstores.I know people who have sold millions of copies of their books. They are still unable to make a living writing books.With self-publishing, you get 100% of your revenues. And you are also in control of the international rights, which you can do on your own or work out a deal with an international rights agent.You also have TOTAL control over other types of deals you can do with your books. I am limited on the deals I can do with my traditionally published books.But I have made much more money carving out special deals for my self-published books.More on this in a bit.Fact: I have made 10x the money on my 13 self-published books as I made on my six traditionally published books.Then there are the people who self-publish more than one book A MONTH. These people make an enormous amount of money by writing.How can someone write more than one book a month? When you are making the money they are, you'll do it. This is a more complicated topic but it's doable.With traditional publishing, they can't even publish more than one book a year for you One person I know publishes up to five books a month and is making millions a year.Anything is possible.---MORE SALESBookstores are disappearing.65% of new book sales (both print books and ebooks) are bought on Amazon. And this number is increasing each year while bookstores are going out of business.Listen to me, I like real print books. I like holding a book. I like turning the pages. I like the smell of a page.This is not ebooks vs physical books. This is Amazon versus bookstores.Just like it was once Barnes & Noble versus independents.If anything, this is a good sign for independents. Barnes & Noble needs mass book sales but people go to indie bookstores because they love the curation.A traditional publisher prides themselves on two things: they can give you an advance (which is going down every year) and they can get you in bookstores (which are disappearing).And for that they take 85% of your sales. But you don't need them and never will again.So why does this lead to more sales?For one thing, I can make a decision every day how I want to price my book. Some days I want to publish a book for $3.99 (a price I would never do be able to do with a traditional publisher because they would lose money on that and my royalty would be too small)Some days I will be able to offer a discount to bump up sales by going from $3.99 to 99 cents.And because I can control the marketing more easily (see below), I can boost sales more easily than a traditional publisher, which will NEVER do the types of sophisticated marketing an individual can do. Nor can they make decisions quickly.---CONTROL OF MARKETINGHere's the type of deal I might do on my self-published books:Contact a person with a huge email list. Write a special "new chapter" for the book that is only offered to members of that list. Up the price of the book with that new chapter added just for that person's audience. Then split 50-50 the revenues generated.A publisher will NEVER do this.I do this all of the time. This is part of the reason I've been able to sell over a million copies of "Choose Yourself'.I can also do this:When my next book comes out, I can offer, for free, a PDF of an older self-published book if they buy the next book.This bumps sales of the next book, this also helps me build an email list of people interested in my books (no publisher thinks of this), and helps me generate more interest in my older books.There's about ten to twenty deals like this I've done in the past five years.----EASIER TO WRITEThis is very interesting to me. Self-published books are actually easier to write.How come? I don't have to spend time thinking about the other seven layers of the publishing industryBut more importantly, the format of books has been defined for the past 100 years by the needs of bookstores. Bookstores will require publishers to only send book written with that format.The traditional format: 70,000 words. Fit a very specific genre so they know where to put it on the shelf.When of my friends six years ago self-published a book that was only 8,000 words long.It now has 3,000 reviews and is still every month generating enough income to pay his rent.A traditional publisher contacted him AFTER it was a success and said, "hey, can we publish this now?"They said to him, "We need you to expand it, though. Can you make it at least 60,000 words."He politely declined.I find that most published books are like short magazine articles that are then padded with another 60,000 words to fit the traditional format. This makes them poorly written and boring.With self-publishing, you control your format, write your book, and then start on the next one.---MORE REASONS TO WRITETraditional publishers have only one reason they will publish your book: To make a lot of money.Not a bad reason, although they are strikingly bad at it in today's environment.70 years ago I feel there were other reasons traditional publishers might want to publish your book. Maybe they wanted to help nurture your career over time so that eventually they build a nice backlist of your books that sell consistently.But this is no longer the case. Publisher loyalty to their authors is usually zero. If your book doesn't sell well in the first two weeks it is out there is a decent chance your editor will never return your calls again.But there are many reasons to write a book.a. A legacy for your descendants. I would love if I could read a book written by my great-great-great grandfather describing what his life was like. What's the audience for that book? Just his descendants. But that's a decent reason. b. About something you are passionate about. c. Often people write a book to get speaking or consulting opportunities that are very lucrative. If a company is trying to decide between consultant A and consultant B then they will pick the person who has written a book. I know this to be true. d. Practice. Many people write several books before they manage to produce their big bestseller that changes their lives completely. Book writing is a craft and, like any craft, takes time to build the skillset. e. You aren't limited by genre. You can write a book that YOU want to write as opposed to fitting a specific marketplace. f. To complement your business. A friend of mine makes a special kind of makeup and moisturizer catered to women going through menopause. So she wrote a small book about menopause that explains in detail the chemical and hormonal reactions in the body and how certain chemicals can help. This complements her product sales.---GUESS WHO ELSE SELF-PUBLISHES?Andy Weir (see my podcast with him) wrote "The Martian". But first he self-published it. No publisher would take it.Then Random House picked it up after movie rights were sold and it became a bestselling book and then a movie starring Matt Damon.Hugh Howey self-published eight or nine books before selling "Wool, Part One". He didn't expect that book to do well.Why didn't he expect it to do well? Because nobody knows in advance what will do well. But he got so much reaction, he decided to write "Wool, Part II", then Part III, then part IV".Finally he self-published the combination: "Wool".Guess what? Wool, and Parts 1 - IV, because the top five sellers in the Amazon science fiction section. He was making a ton of money and selling millions of books.Then people started buying his first eight or nine books that were self-published. I bought them all, for instance, after I read Wool. They were great.Then a major publisher picked it up and started selling it in bookstores but by then he was writing his next series, Dust.EL James self-published, "50 Shades of Grey". Most people don't realize this.She has built a following on Twilight fan fiction websites. So she wrote a book of fan fiction, changed the character's names (and switched vampires to billionaires) and self-published.After it sold 250,000 copies, Simon & Schuster signNowed out and bought the rights to her book.At one point, her self-published book was selling one out of every three book sold in the world. Ultimately the series has sold over 150,000,000 books.---NO GATEKEEPERS. NO EXCUSES.When I write a book, I want people to read it. If it's bad, fine. Nobody will read it. If it's good, then great. A lot of people will read it.But as I mentioned before, it's impossible to tell in advance. 29 publishers rejected "Harry Potter" before a small publisher picked it up.Every publisher rejected John Grisham's first book, until his second book, "The Firm" became a bestseller and he was able to publish his second book, "A Time to Kill".Nobody knows. Which means the role of the gatekeeper is nonsense.And yet if you pour your life into writing a book, you have to handle the word "No" from agents, editors, marketing people, publishers, bookstores, etc.So frustrating! I hate it. Honestly, I feel it in my gut when I need validation from someone I know is not qualified to give me validation.And I say "not qualified" not in a negative way. NOBODY is qualified to judge your book. Only the audience. But, in traditional publishing, you have to get past these artificial gatekeepers to signNow your audience.In self-publishing, you just publish. AND THEN you can create a built in audience by building up an email list, etc.---MORE OPPORTUNITIES.As I mentioned above: with a self-published book, even with a limited audience, you can get speaking opportunities, consulting opportunities, coaching opportunities, etc"Choose Yourself Media" which is now publishing a course on How to Self-Publish started because many people read "Choose Yourself" and wanted to know more about the different ways they can build lives of freedom and well-being.---YOU BECOME A BETTER WRITERThe more you write, the better a writer you become.90% of being a traditionally published writer is dealing the ins and outs of the publishing business.I'd rather focus on writing. Can someone help me knowing more about DRM - Digital Rights Management; Its Dos and DONTs?
With the upfront disclosure that I work for a DRM software developer, I would be happy to share some DRM lessons learned from many years of customer implementations. I have found that the success of a project most often can be tracked to the early planning stages. So without further ado...here are 10 DRM Do's and Don'ts.1. DO: Put some mechanism in place to protect your information if you expect others to value it, or if sharing that information would violate your corporation’s or an individual’s privacy. This may seem obvious in response to a question about DRM, but in almost every discussion on the topic I’ve seen, a DRM cynic will chime in informing everyone that any encryption can be broken and so there no point in implementing DRM. It’s certainly the safe and easy argument to make, since securing digital information is indeed a hard problem; however the same logic could lead someone to leave their house unlocked, since all locks can eventually be broken. Most reasonable people recognize the advantage of making it harder to break into your house, and of making it clear that unauthorized entry is prohibited. Without going into too much detail here, DRM can and does work by:• Thwarting the most obvious (and some more sophisticated) attempts to access and share restricted documents• Logging and alerting you about attempts to access your secure documents• Watermarking end-user data onto views and prints of secure documents• Declaring your version of a document to be the “official” version• Establishing a “circle of trust” between you and your users, who may share your concerns about piracy or privacy.2. DO: Consider if your content is a good fit for DRM. DRM works best with content that is valuable to a professional niche, or timely, or both (e.g,. distribution of financial research.) In such markets, the high cost of the content makes the paying customer a willing participant in the control process ("I paid for this information so that I would have a trading advantage; I don't want some other guy getting it for free!"). As a general rule, mass-market products at low price points aren't a good a fit for DRM, such as commercial MP3 distribution. The reason for the failure is a mix of consumer expectations, the perception of "lock-in" to one of many devices available for playing the content, the cost of the content itself, and other factors.3. DO: Research your user base before settling on a DRM scheme. Which platforms and devices are they on? How are they using your content—for up-to-the-minute information on their phone or tablet, or printing it out to read at leisure? Will they have access to the internet at all times? Are they in a corporate environment where installing any sort of client software requires administrative intervention? Or on a college campus where the risk of redistribution is high? Answering these questions before you deploy DRM will dictate which technology you choose and the degree of security you place on your files, and save you a great deal of customer angst later on. Some DRM solutions allow a range of security from CIA-level to simply monitoring usage. 4. DO: Look for ways to scale the protection to the environment.As new platforms emerge for the consumption of content – tablets, phones, etc. – they enable the development of new methods (for authentication, for instance), data formats, and user experiences. Where possible it is worth considering how a given piece of content can be displayed in different ways on different devices, with the amount of control modulated by the capabilities of the device: the less functional the display environment, the less DRM is required to control that environment.5. DO: Design your DRM implementation to be as flexible as possible. Complexity is a good thing when it comes to information security. Having a single point of access, such as a password to open a document, is the easiest security method to break. That’s not only because it depends on one thing, the password (which is the same for everyone and can be shared), but because in most cases it is permanent. Look for a DRM solution that lets you define permissions policies for both users and documents, and which lets you revoke access after you have distributed the document. The best way to do this is to link your DRM system with your customer database, so that changes in customer status can translate instantly to their permissions.6. DON'T: Make it harder than necessary to view the protected content.There is an inevitable tradeoff between ease-of-use and protection: the more protected the content, the more complex the protection system will be to install and use. As above, the "right" amount of protection depends on the content being protected, but the right protection mechanism is usually the one that imposes the fewest new behaviors on the user. A DRM system that works within the same applications used to view unprotected content will normally be better received than one that requires the downloading, installation and training on new applications. The best DRM is invisible to the legitimate user.7. DON'T: Assume the most expensive solution is necessarily the best (or the cheapest, for that matter).There’s no denying that most DRM software carries a hefty price tag with it. The reasons for this include the intensive engineering resources required to develop and maintain a credible DRM product; licensing and royalty costs associated with supporting the more popular formats and devices, and the coalescing of the market around corporate and financial users (since the technology has had less success in mass-market applications.) The top “enterprise rights management” solutions have a starting price in the six figures and include a buy-in to specific server and document management products. However there are some smaller developers (my company included) who offer DRM functionality in a hosted environment by annual subscription, as well as in standalone server modules for companies who need only a few key pieces of the secure information sharing puzzle. Don’t be seduced by companies offering very inexpensive DRM however—in most cases you will find the inflexibility of those systems or the inexperience of the company will end up costing you more later on. 8. DON'T: Attempt to go it alone with a custom, in-house solution.Distributing files to hundreds or maybe thousands of end-users on diverse platforms and devices is a complicated business, and a big reason DRM software companies are able to demand high prices for their technology. DRM companies, for the most part, have also been at it for a long time and seen hundreds of customer implementations, both successes and trainwrecks. Many of them also have special licensing relationships with document viewers which aren’t available to companies not directly in the DRM software producing business. Also consider that the more customized your DRM implementation, the more difficult it will be to maintain going forward, as newer versions of viewers, formats and devices continue to proliferate. Finally, in a worst-case scenario where your security implementation is hacked, a software vendor will be better equipped to respond quickly (not to mention highly motivated). If your core business is anything other than DRM software development, stick to your knitting and leave that to the experts.9. DON’T: Try to protect static contentIn the days before copyright laws were introduced and/or enforced, publishers had little incentive to bring out complete works, as these would immediately be re-issued by other publishers. So publishers developed ways to serialize content, to minimize their risk and increase the workload of the copiers. It may be that the current market for high-quality complete works (e.g. books, recorded songs, films, etc.) is devolving into a commercial environment similar to that of post-revolutionary France (or pre-revolutionary America, see Mark Stefik's work for details (http://www2.parc.com/istl/groups...) and if so the best approach is probably to keep producing new content. This also makes the DRM process easier, as a focus on new content permits the DRM to evolve as needed. The key is to produce content that is perceived as more valuable than a blog post, usually because it is timely, attractively displayed, and focused like a laser on your target market.10. DON’T make your implementation more complex than it needs to be.There are many variables involved in creating a system to deliver encrypted content: users and documents must be identified, rules and policies must be established, integration with others systems (e.g. eCommerce) may be required, etc. Sometimes the design process results in a specification that while technically possible is too complex to be implemented in the timeframe available. Or the requirement might include desired features, e.g. real-time creation or customization of documents, that imposes excessive demand on the server process and can limit scalability or customer responsiveness. DRM is inherently complex, so the simplest possible implementation is frequently the most successful.I hope this helps.
