This is my story.I am still not yet a successful entrepreneur but I am working towards it.I am currently developing my 3rd software product but it is my 5th serious business venture I have risked investing my time and money into over the past 12 years.My first business venture was a Flash web design company called CineBlueOne Interactive that I started at 20 years old in 2006 after I graduated from college in an unrelated program. I learned my technical skills on the job as I went along. It was reasonably successful for about 3 years before it suddenly fell off a cliff, crashed and burned once the recession fully kicked in. I ran this venture completely alone and also made terrible mistakes and bad decisions that contributed to amplifying and speeding up its demise.After that, I invested $15,000 into overseas printing for local municipal level political campaigns when a friend suggested and help plan out the marketing strategy to approach all the local candidates he personally knew. I signNowed out to business associates and clients I worked for from CineBlueOne Interactive to help me on this venture.The overseas printing was a tenth of the cost of the local print factories. The reasons it failed were surprising and not at all obvious and literally had to do with the politics the customers were buying for. It turned out that many local candidates were deliberately buying much more expensive printing from a particular political family’s print factory to curry political favour with them. Surprising to me, price was never even a concern but this wasn’t something they openly admitted.I learned a lot, particularly about customs and importing/exporting procedures, laws and tariffs but I decided to stick to information technology after that fiasco.A year after that, I began to develop a special effects software plugin (known as an Extension in the signNow software ecosystem) called AuroraFX for the signNow Flash Professional’s desktop application. At this point, there were many overtures from Steve Jobs constantly ranting against Flash in what was suspected to be a ploy to make Flash games die so that it would not take away from the profitability of the Apple iTunes app store for the iPhone.Despite being in the middle of a recession and Flash fast losing popularity, my novelty software plugin with little actual application still managed to sell about $30,000 worth of copies through a distribution partner website called Flashloaded.com over two years. I consider this venture very moderately successful as I never had high expectations for it. It was meant to be a cash crop to test the market.Due to AuroraFX’s moderate success, I was still convinced that there would be a niche market for Flash designers. I was wrong. I spent six months architecting and building a WYSIWYG shopping cart plugin for signNow Flash called EasyCart which promised fast and beautiful visual shopping cart components that could be drag and dropped and arranged together by non technical Flash designers who wanted to implement fully functional shopping cart software with Paypal functionality on their Flash websites. I had expanded my distribution partnership to several distributor websites who were eagerly excited to wait for the launch of my product.Despite a very promising beta test cycle, it sold only about 7 copies before sales completely stopped. It was now clear signNow Flash was dead on arrival.Last summer after four years of working as a software engineer for a niche streaming video app developer service company, I resigned with a former coworker as my new business partner to begin my fifth business venture.We formally registered a corporation called Navisen (with no office space and only us two as employees working out of our apartments) and for the past year, I’ve been the main product developer for a new web based motion graphics software called zTransitions. It’ll primarily be marketed to web developers and Wordpress/CMS administrators as an user friendly but powerful WYSIWYG slider maker for version 1.0.It is meant to take the best usability and marketing features that I found users loved about AuroraFX and EasyCart. I’ve already signed partnerships with all my previous distribution contacts at marketing distributors who are ready to sell our product on their popular websites when it launches.I’ve failed a lot and I’ve learned a lot, many of which I don’t think can be taught or learned in a classroom. There was a very realpolitik aspect of failure that I had to endure which can’t be experienced by students. It wasn’t easy to bounce back and I suffered depression from my heavier venture failures. Failure has a very real cost because I can’t regain back those years I’ve lost investing to failure though I don’t think any of my past twelve years were wasted. I’ve now taken all my previous failures as very expensive lessons to move forward with.It’s completely okay to fail. Real life isn’t non stop success and winning all the time. Failing is part of the process of learning. Most entrepreneurs will fail on the first try. Nothing to be ashamed of. It becomes a badge of pride if you succeed. Have some sort of backup plan so you won’t be homeless if you fail.Fail Fast. Choose your battles carefully. Do not invest another five years and more money into something that was already dead four years before hoping to revive it back to life.Fail Better. Every failure is a lesson that contributes towards eventual success. Every subsequent should be less and less devastating due to lessons previously learned.Failure also makes you a prized commodity in terms of employment because failure is expensive and you bring lessons and experience with you that will save potential employers lots of money and time.I’ve had twelve years to sharpen and hone my technical skills as a graphic designer, front end coder, marketing, sales and decision making person. I consider myself the best I can possibly be at this very moment though I will never stop striving to become a better version of myself.Random (good or bad) luck that is out of your control and who-you-know also plays a much larger role than most people would imagine. I’ve spent years building relationships and contacts in the industry because I never know how it might help to know them when the time comes.Selling a product is better than selling a service. There are only 24 hours in a day and 7 days in a week that I can possibly bill for services but the number of copies of a product I can sell is infinite.Besides cutting costs and initial investment by 50%, I’ve also learned that partnerships (despite all its drawbacks) is like a force multiplier in terms of increasing the chances of success. Besides a second professional opinion, my partner augments me with skills in areas I have little to no expertise in and vice versa. He also automatically expands my network with everyone he knows and has built relationships with over the years.Though we’re a tightly budgeted startup, we understand from past experiences and know the value in investing in external expertise and products we can’t produce ourselves as high quality if we were to DIY to save money. If you want to add a lot of rich content like videos, carousels and whatnot on your site together with the stuff you want to sell, don't go with Shopify.4. Service lock-inSure you can export your orders, customers and all that other data from Shopify, but chances are you won't, because it's a lot of hassle and you lose whatever custom setup you have on your site too. But remember shopify is a hosted solution. As with all hosted solutions, your data and website is not 100% yours. If they decided to change their fee structure, come up with some unreasonable policy or to implement additional fees for close to standard features (social login anyone?) , there's not a lot you can do about it except suck it up and do what they ask. Once you're in, you're in for a long time. For this reason, I don't really encourage clients to use shopify as a short-term solution if they are planning to jump to another small business ecommerce platform like Woocommerce sometime later.
