[Music] hi my name is mrs. weir and today we're going to talk about some research tools but first we're gonna start out on our Richmond homepage to show you exactly how to get to certain locations that will help you and you're doing completing your tasks for while you're at home so here I am on the Richmond homepage you can type in our VA schools net appear at the top if you'll see right up at the top in the address bar and as soon as you get to this homepage all you have to do is scroll down a little bit and on the left side you're gonna see right over here the RPS ad home tab well let me move out of the way so I won't be in your way okay so let's first click on the RPS at home tab when that opens up you'll see lots of information about how and in the directions on accessing many of the tools that you'll need in order to complete assignments while you're at home and it shows you exactly where to go on the left side here here in the first large tab is the pre-kindergarten Elementary School in the middle has the middle schools and off to the right is I'll get out of the way again off to the right is the high school tab I want to take your attention down to the next row of tabs there are information and and all the instructions on how to log in to clever if you click on this tab information about Google classroom with frequently asked questions and as you can see you go along there's many as several other tabs of items that have been going on during this time on the left right here are the orange tabs there is an on-demand tutoring and if you're having difficulties at home and you need some tutoring in say math or whatever topic it is if you click on that tab and fill out the correct information you'll have tutors that will be able to tutor you online and it's pretty clear once you get in there so that's available to you as well if you scroll down just a little further you're gonna see all of these links that are available that are appropriate for elementary school those for middle school and those for high school on the right let's go back and take a look at the middle school tab I click on that tab you'll then see the grade levels that will come up and all you have to do is click on let's say let's go to 7th grade I click on 7th grade the calendar will come up so here was week 1 and as you you know roll your mouse over top of each of the dates you can see the items that you if you click on that date what was going on on that day and it gives all your lessons that you would do now we're into week 3 and today's Monday April 20th you can go to each day and as you can see my mouse as I scroll over the day it turns so that it's a hot link so let's just go to April 20th under April 20th you're gonna see how exactly your English language lessons are available there let me click here we can scroll down it goes on to the math section and each one of those talks about the materials you would need and and the lessons in science and you continue on there's lessons and videos available in PE and some information there for counseling all I have to do is go if I want to go back is is to go back and come out of that seventh grade and it takes me right back to the calendar so this is an easy way it's not hard to get there you can go to our PS Tech org as you can see up here directly or you can go to the Richmond homepage scroll down to I'll come out of that one and here's my Richmond at home here as you can see I went to the wrong tab for a moment but here's the Richmond I can X out of whatever grade level and just go to what's appropriate for you as far as your grade levels and all of your lessons are they're very easy to get to okay so that's our PS at home lots of information and I'll just point out as well that in the high school tab there is lots of information about exactly what our students have to do in order to complete their courses and and if you have any difficulty trying to find information there it's all there but if you have any difficulty or questions just contact your counselors okay now as I'm gonna scroll down the next thing we're going to do is we're going to go to the Richmond Public Library there are two databases that we're going to cover from here forward the first one is and you can get to it as many things on the internet you can get to it a few different ways if we go to the Richmond Public Library and I want to show you this site cuz well as you can see some things change because at the very top you can get an e card and then services these are the two places that we're gonna look first and foremost so if I click on get an e card maybe you don't have a library card at home but you want to use some of the items that are available at the Richmond Public Library now there's certain things you can use with any card and certain things you cannot use with any card but if I click on that get an e card right up here at the top and scroll down and looking on to the left says who's eligible what's your ecard allows you to do you can apply online and they will give you an immediate number that is an e card that you can use without ever going in as obviously the libraries are public libraries are closed once you get a physical card you have access to several more options that are available that you don't have as when you just have an e card so if I come down here because I don't have one you have to be 18 or older but all your parent can sign fill in this information as you go along so all I do is click on this apply for an e card right here on the left it's a short little application your parents have to give you permission and then when you click get it they're going to give you a code right away that you can use in order to get into some of the access some of the ebooks and things that are available in the original Public Library which is a great opportunity to have while we're at home because we all need to be reading okay so that's where you get an e card rich in Public Library then there's this tab that says services so if I click on services there's as they say a plethora of services that are available for you here at Richmond Public Library first there general this is the tab we're gonna go look at to get some of our research information the database we're going to look at but there's all kinds of things that are helpful to you and you can scroll through them as you you can see there's card services office services forms law things documents but we're gonna key right here in the general one on online resources so if I click on online resources this will be the first of the two databases we're going to use they give you a tab and you can go directly to these different items or you can just scroll down so what we're gonna go to is as we scroll down there's read it now different ways that you can use and if you read the description below it it will tell you if you need to have a permanent card not an e-card some of the things are not available to us and you can keep scrolling down and see some of these reading there's entertainment items there's online learning and this is what we're going to look for now one of the things that's in online learning is the world book but as you can see if it says you need a 13 digit permanent library card your ecard won't work here for that so nor will it work for the news bank but when she gets your permanent card it will so let's go back up what we're gonna look at is find at Virginia now we can get to find a Virginia from the Richmond Public Library site which is a link on our RPS site or you can just go and type in find it BA org and it will take you directly to it as always there's lots of different ways to get to the same thing so first let's go to this database find at Virginia and I click on that and I get this search screen find of Virginia is a really great tool this first one well we're gonna look concentrate on is explore of public libraries but first I'm going to go to this green tab and I'm gonna choose it defaults to adults but I'm gonna choose middle school I'm going to click on middle school and you will see right there to the left it changes to middle school research if I scroll down I will see some other helpful links that I can use afterwards but for now I'm gonna look into this Explorer database so I take my mouse and I click on Explorer and I will get a search name now the first thing it does is it defaults right here to a lead article this one's on hurricanes if I want to do information on hurricanes I can click on learn more and it will go on and do the search on hurricanes if I scroll down you can see that they do by content area if they are looking for biographical information on somebody maybe I need some ideas I want to do something in current issues I can click on current issues I can click on history or any of these topics in order to see what they have already listed there all I have to do is click on that more but or I can go right to the top click my cursor in the search box and do my own search let's say I want to search the Vietnam War so I type in Vietnam and just like Google it has it populates some other searches well maybe that could give me some ideas on other things that I might want to search maybe I want to look at Vietnam war affects let's just go to the general Vietnam word search to start with and I click search and it does my search on the Vietnam War now a few things that I want you to notice as you check out the results that you get there's a few things that you look for right away how many search results did I get well it's gonna show me 1 through 40 on the first page but it have gotten over 11,000 results on my search on the Vietnam War all over here to the left are all of my limiters so I'm not obviously gonna go through 11,000 articles but what I do want to look at is to see the ways that I can limit it to find the things that I need first and foremost first make sure and it defaults to full-text full-text means that it just has the entire article that you're looking for or the entire information on what it is you've searched so that is if that that will be checked automatically but you can always check and make sure it is if I know if I scroll down a little bit more and I look to the I can limit my search in that 11,000 to maybe I just want book results maybe I just want biography results maybe I need some primary source documents so I could just click on this tab if I click on the primary source document you'll see that it will update the search and now I've got 16 items that are primary sources and it gives me this little icon right here that tells me it is a primary source well Vietnam Veterans Against the War statement so this is a statement it's a primary source maybe I want to use this one in my research so how do I get that I click on the blue title open that up here's the title this is the database that it came from and if I scroll down I'm gonna see the whole article tells me where it what it was from to the Senate committee of Foreign Relations April 23rd 1971 I can scroll down and read the information here on this primary source document now if I scroll back up to the top I'm gonna get out of the way again I look to the right and I want to see these tools maybe I really want to use this this resource in my in my research but I don't want to read the whole thing right now I'm gonna save it I can come over here on the right side and click on Google Drive and when I click on Google Drive my information is gonna come up I click on my email that has and if you have it open already it's always helpful and then it will say so if I click on Google Drive I'll show you what it looks like I have two emails so I'm going to click on my are VA schools as soon as I click on that you see it blinks and now up here it says save to Google Drive your documents been saved to your Google Drive account so I know that that's already in my Google Drive account and I say ok it also gives me some other tools to the right I can email it to myself if I want when I click that I just type in my email and hit Send I can save it to other locations maybe my desktop or a flash drive if I need what is the citation I'm gonna click on that site tab and as I click on that citation which format do I want to use well all of them will come up but I have to scroll down I'm going to scroll down and we're gonna use MLA screen I'm gonna use I'm gonna scroll down till I see MLA and there it is here's that work cited I can copy this and paste it into a Word document or keep it you know I can export it into my it gives you an option here to export it into if you're using any of these citation tools or I can just copy and paste it and put it into my Google Drive so that's how I would cite that information so you've got the tools once you open your your the whatever piece of information you're looking at and you've got your tools when you first start doing your search now if I want to go back I can click my back button here or I can just go right here to where it says results list so I'm going to click on results list goes back to all of the results that I have and there I am again okay so that's the sixteen because I had limited it just to primary sources if I want to go back to all the search results I can click that there and take myself back to the entire list of search results so let's say we go back one more time there's the statement here go back once more you and okay so there we go now I wanted to show you a few other things that they have here that's back to the eleven thousand results you can see not only does it have primary sources if I scroll down remember you've got your topic overview that's the main general kind of information it's a great place to start doing your research and I can scroll down there's video results I can click on any of these to use in my research I can keep on going in if you notice these icons it gives you different types of information periodicals it gives you video it gives you primary sources it gives you academic journals which are a little bit more research-based kinds of information but it's very easy to use and it's free so you find that again where do I go to get it I can go to find it v a.org and go directly to the Explorer type in middle click on middle school and then go to type in or go to one of the categories or I can go to the Richmond Public School homepage go to RPS at home and at the bottom the links are right there there with the Richmond Public Library okay so that is find it Virginia all right the next one we're going to cover is the gale database and this is one that we use that we pay for for Richmond Public Schools we have and I have put the tab here typed it in now I'm gonna give you the address and the address is it's kind of long let's see if I can do it a different way let me click up here and then you can you'll have access to typing it in if you type in h TT p is a secure site colon backslash twice and then it is let's do infotrac INF o TR a see infotrac kale yeah yummy calm now you'll see it it's up on this on the screen now the reason I'm holding it here for a minute you can you can jot it down it is not as soon as you hit Enter it changes that web address into a very long address that you don't really need so it's infotrac gale you can see it in patrick Gale comm backslash IT web backslash Richmond PS question mark DB I guess that's Richmond public school question mark database equals and then in all caps Oh V I see so as soon as I type that in there I'm gonna hit enter and it will take me to this scale sign in you need a password and I'm gonna give you the password right here there and it'll probably change in the fall but normally you would get the web address from your librarian at school and they will give you the password make it out of the way one more time okay over here the password is it's not too hard schools SCH oh oh oh yes all lowercase and you can't see what it looks like when you type it in but that's the password SC H oh oh LS schools plural all lowercase so then I will click sign-in and it comes right back to the screen but now I have access to do my search okay so here again very much like find it Virginia this is it has a search screen that you can type in you can always use your advanced tools if I scroll down t also has issues of interest has a main article that's there and if you keep scrolling you will see you can browse issues by category here's Business and Economics here's energy and environmentalism there's 51 different ones there health and medicine science national database topics law and politics society and culture war and diplomacy so they're just then they have 476 as you can see right here so but I can go right to the top and I can type in anything that I want that I'm interested in let's say I type in athletes let's see let's not do that let me just take one from the list let's go to health and medicine and medical care so then we go to medical care and you can see those that are updated there's an overview of the main topic medical care and then you can read more that gives you the whole topic but look at how it gives you the information that's going to be a nice overview by clicking the read more and then it shows you on this page there are different viewpoints because this is opposing viewpoints they take experts on all different sides of issues and get information from those experts feet they have featured viewpoints there's five featured viewpoints it tells you who the author is where it's from and if I want to read that article I click on that blue title and if I you can see there's other viewpoints here if I there's infographics there's reference material there statistics which is always good to have to when you're doing your research there's videos down here that I can use for my research there's audio magazines you can see all different news articles there's over almost 5000 news articles here and magazines there's websites no of course I can just go to google and type in a website saying you know with whatever topic it is I know but in here they have already vetted some of these websites so you know they're better websites than just finding something out there on the internet that you don't know where it came from so again and then they have related topics at the bottom which is always helpful but let's take one of these that we might want to use let's go back and see one of the featured viewpoints we'll just take this one William one okay that's the author that's where it's from that's the document type and you can see here's the article it gives a commentary about it and then the article and just like the other databases there's the source citation they put it right at the bottom you choose which one you're using will MLA eight is what we generally use so this would be the citation that I would use for my research I can export it if I'm using EasyBib or one of these tools to do my work cited page I can export it and it'll take it right to that which is a really nice feature so the other way I can remember up here at the top again I'm in a way I can here's the citation information if I want to know it right there I want this article so I'm gonna send it to my Google Drive click on that or to my email or if you used onedrive as soon as I click on it it'll take it and I'll save it right there my Google Drive a really nice feature not what you get when you're out there just on Google so again if I needed to print it or download it all these tools are here so there's tools that limit things when you're doing your search and then they're tools that you use once you've gotten into your piece of information that you're using so let's go back to results right here and as you can see the the overview of whatever the subject is the whatever that I've that that result that has come from the overview is always a great place to start and again you can go back here and browse issues from this location as well you can also see your search history which is also very nice so let's review starting with the RPS at home we have all of those options on the I homepage remember you can just go to the r-va school's net scroll down to the RPS FM here's all your areas there's your tutoring by grade level here how to's there's your reading the read aloud that the superintendent has been doing and then his math page there's also additional resources and then the three columns this is where we get to the Public Library of course you could just Google Regional Public Library but the link is right here once you get into the public library you can one more time get your card here the services here and under services we're gonna show under the general tab whoopsie online resources and scroll down again we're gonna go all the way down to the online learning and there's find at Virginia so we've got two databases find of Virginia and Explorer that is in find at Virginia I'll click on it just to show you one more time click on your grade level middle school Explorer and then you do your search up here or go to one of your categories and search from there remember to use your limiters and remember to save it and get your citation okay that's Explorer and find it Virginia and lastly is our gale and the opposing viewpoints and once again the you can go back and look at this video again
