He also saw the Soviet Union’s enigmatic decline in agriculture, and he looked to America for the solution. For at the University of Iowa in the late 1950’s he saw how advanced American Agriculture was, and that one great attribute was that those who studied in this program also had to go and work the fields hands on. By contrast at the Agricultural Institute in Moscow, the students studied theory, but never would go to live in agricultural land, and thus nothing ever changed. The entire idea of spreading knowledge about how to increase production remained holed off in Moscow on black boards. Khrushchev also condemned colonialism openly, and he courted former colonized nations. In a dramatic incident in 1960, as he headed the Soviet Delegation to the U.N., he would openly confront the Filipino Ambassador as he gave what Khrushchev termed a Pro Western speech where he did not even mention the colonization of the Philippines but instead attacked the Soviet Union for it’s occupation of Eastern Europe. Rather than waiting for a turn at responding, he lifted his own shoe and began banging. It is a memory which the world has not forgotten, and regardless of where people stood in ideology, it was a defining moment of his leadership, and to many an end of this concept of verbal appeasement that colonialism somehow benefited those who were victimized by it. When Khrushchev stepped into the special Hall of Reception at Moscow Airport, members of the KGB were in mass, and he knew what was happening. He very simply accepted the situation and asked that no spectacle be made. He would state that night, “I'm old and tired. Let them cope by themselves. I've done the main thing. Could anyone have dreamed of telling Stalin that he didn't suit us anymore and suggesting he retire? Not even a wet spot would have remained where we had been standing. Now everything is different. The fear is gone, and we can talk as equals. That's my contribution. But soon the scene became so lax, that Kremlin workers simply began walking outside of the hall. The expected fiery oratory and denials never happened, there was no need for hostility and instead Brezhnev realized that he had no resistance to combat. So a deal was made and Khrushchev was given 500 rubles a month and two residences. Though the pension would be reduced later to 400 Rubles a month and a smaller Dacha. In principle it continued until Khrushchev's death in 1971. Family members stated that Khrushchev would cry at night, because his name had been removed from State History. They claimed that they were just loading up the last load of stuff as the owner was moving out that day. They said they didn’t know anything about the damage to the property; that it was that way when they got there. My guy stepped up and started showing the cops the video. That was enough for them. They were arrested and charged with Breaking & Entering, Burglary, and Willful Destruction of Private Property.Once we got into the property it was unbelievable how much damage 4 guys could do in the 15 minutes between the 911 call and the police arrival. They beat the fixtures, windows, doors, banisters, light fixtures, mirrors, counters, sinks, cabinets, and walls. It was heartbreaking, there was over $15k in damage, but there was a silver lining. Papa Schmuck was actually pretty well financed. My nephew had to delay moving into his new place for 6 weeks as I got my crews in to fix the place up, but in the end he got a completely remodeled house out of the deal.The schmucks pled out to non-felony charges, but when it came to damages, the judge said it was for the civil courts to decide. It took over a year to get them into civil court for the trial. The 4 schmucks never tried to deny what they did, they just claimed that what they did was before my nephew actually closed on the property, so they hadn’t damaged my nephew’s property, they damaged their family member’s property. Between the timestamp on the security video at the title company showing us walking out and my guy’s video with the audio of when he called us to say the truck had backed in, it was very clear that the closing had been completed before they backed in. My nephew won the civil suit and received complete restitution.Of course, changing the locks likely wouldn’t have stopped these guys.
