[Music] [Music] [Music] welcome to today's global connections program i'm bill miller today we're going to take a look at some of the educational institutions and how they're preparing students for the future and especially a transformational future that will be changing very quickly i guess today is an expert in this area mr john carver is an educator a former superintendent of schools and a change agent mr carver has 40 years of educational experience in public education and he's been nationally recognized for many of his accomplishments john carver welcome to today's global connections program well bill thank you and i i'm excited to be here with you today i appreciate you being with me john i you you have such an extensive and just a brilliant record in education i don't know where to start i'm just going to ask you what do you see as some of the highlights of your experiences over the last 40 years and how do you bring them into the discussion that we're going to have today well i think it's important to realize is that as i tell people we're at a printing press moment in the history of mankind and for the last 40 years i've been a practitioner within an educational system that was designed for the 20th century time on task standardized tests mass instruction and and the application of those processes to how we treat how we train kids how we educate kids and about 13 14 years ago as a superintendent of schools in van meter iowa we recognized that the old method or the old pedagogy and methods we were using wasn't really preparing kids for the future and that was a great epiphany and that as our district recognized that the other districts in the state of iowa they it was hard for them to swallow and that 15 years ago there were 12 one-to-one school districts in the state of iowa that all came to the same uh synchronicity that we needed to do something different uh and that from that 12 then we we leveraged each other we ended up we looked at providing instruction to multiple classrooms which you know was a was a a huge step forward because most times uh historically you went into a classroom the door shut and you got that that instruction because we were one-to-one uh we were able to initiate spanish in three different uh districts three different classrooms tie those kids together and then just watching that organically to see that change it was an epiphany it was a huge epiphany uh and so the the the methods that we have this the structure of education as it has been um is not it doesn't work in the 21st century and 19 brought that to the forefront and so now uh we're trying to figure out you know how are how are educational systems going to evolve uh to meet what a new normal is and how our educational system is going to evolve to really face the challenges that that we faced as a as a as a planet from uh you know global warming to uh power electricity uh you know what what are we gonna do and you know we need to restructure our educational systems to prepare kids to meet these new challenges um so i mean it's it's an exciting time but it's a scary time at the same time it certainly is very challenging no doubt about it and frightening at the same time you're right and you you know most of your years were spent in iowa but you're what we're talking about today applies to what you've learned over the years in iowa but it's applicable to all around the united states and around the world because other educational systems are dealing with the same problem it may be a little different but those challenges are there and the old way of teaching sort of a linear approach or best practices or education based on standards however whichever those items you want to include are there and of course that's changing do you see that that is that the educators of today the people who are creating a new approach to education are they taking all of this into consideration how it's hard to broad brush everybody paint everybody with a broad brush but do you see that a large number of school systems are incorporating these ideas of thinking differently because we don't live in 1960 you know or 1920 you know or 1930 we were living 20 30 and 21 30 and on and beyond so uh do you see that that's changing uh i think that uh classroom teachers today are probably about the most heroic people um i've ever ever come in contact with uh with covid19 shutting them down and then being forced to teach remotely you've got all kinds of innovation and creativity going on it's interesting to note that a lot of the national publications you know the teachers are not comfortable in this new modality of teaching remotely but they're trying to work through it and at the end of the day the folks who are educators are committed to children but it is uh prior to coven 19 there was a huge push back about doing anything different as far as construction in the classroom it was a slow go and with coven 19 and being forced to teach remotely and to look at instructional practices you know a lot of people as rick smears would say they're at that moment where they're going hmm this this could work and a lot of parents are going to choose not to send their children back and to continue to homeschool and so the whole system is is changing there are some early adopters but most are still kind of in that survivor mode right now they've just not quite moved out of it that's probably very very true i'm sure we've got one foot in the old modality and and and one foot in the new modality and you know rick uh schmeyers talks about dual processes well for a while there's still going to be the traditional k-12 education as we have known it but what is going to emerge is a new uh structure of teaching and learning that's going to be individualized personalized differentiated and remotely exactly and that's that's right we're talking about moving from the traditional standardization to this individualized approach and it what else do you see what are some of the other aspects of that as we go forward because that that really is going to happen whether we want it to or not it's it's going to pull us along i guess like the the undertow and we're going to have to move forward but what are a few other items that would describe that well i i think the educational system post covered 19 really needs to look at the individual child what their passions and abilities are and then have serious discussions about those passions and abilities and then connecting them either to professions or opportunities to make contributions in the world linking linking their learning to real world applications you know historically we've gone through schools and it's learned a bunch of facts and upon graduation from high school going on to college to learn more facts and it's hard it's been hard for kids to make that connection between what they're learning and going into a profession so i i think that's a part of it i you know the the underlying piece to all of this is access to broadband internet and you know until that happens it it's it's going to be hams and have-nots and that's the biggest uh thing that i see other than this change in pedagogy is if we're going to go to this new pedagogy if we're going to individualize personalize and differentiate instruction then every student every educator has got to be able to get online and to be able to connect and collaborate digitally when we hear of infrastructure bills we automatically think of things like roads bridges overpasses railroad tracks those types of things which are important but the broadband is just as important is it not as far as linking and providing the ability for students no matter where they live to tap into the knowledge to the resources that are available well broadband internet today is just like bringing electricity to tennessee uh it it needs the same kind of uh national push and you know bringing the tva the tennessee valley authority bringing to electricity to where i live now in middle tennessee was crucial in moving the region into the 20th century and with that electricity then came jobs came industry and manufacturing you know a broadband internet connection is does the same thing and it again it it allows students to connect digitally anywhere in the world um now with that we're going to have to develop uh the digital citizenship we're going to just as we had to learn how to use the telephone correctly and the television correctly we're going to have to learn how to use this mode of communication correctly but it is broadband internet access to that is is crucial for this for everything to go forward how would we develop that citizenship i totally agree with you how would that work more or less the nuts and bolts of it there are some national organizations that are working on criteria for digital citizenship iste is one that the future ready schools group is another one that is working towards manners if you would on on how to be online how to discern information i would tell you that's a work in progress right now i don't think anybody has come up with concrete sequential you do this you do this you do this i think it's organically happening in every school there are some federal laws that have been passed as far as access to information and age-appropriateness for getting online but but a lot of that is yet to be determined now all that being said reaching the kids early on in elementary school and middle school on how to use these tools is very important and you know it's amazing too that we've given kids it seems like we've given kids and provided children iphones and really not a lot of instruction to go along with it you can't help but go to church or to the playground or the park and there's a child with a smartphone and that's almost like giving a child the keys to the car and not teaching them how to drive so so that's we may get the same result too well in some cases um there have been some bad results so that's all being developed right now well you're watching global connections television which is a privately funded independently produced program the opinions expressed on global connections are solely those of the moderator and his guest we'd invite our viewers to go to our website at www.globalconnectionstelevision.com to view previous programs also if you're involved with the pbs or community access television station or perhaps an educational institution that has an intra-campus television hookup or involved with a podcast you just have a computer you like our shows and you'd like to share them please feel free to do so global connections television is provided as a public service to help us better understand international issues and how they impact our lives today we're taking a look at the the field of education and what can be done to prepare students to deal and to thrive in a society and a system that's changing in a transformational formational way i guess it's an expert on this topic mr john carver is an educator former superintendent of schools and a change agent mr carver has 40 years of educational experience in the public education system john we've talked about a variety of approaches to dealing with this now we also you're involved in rick meyer's communities of the future which haven't been predicted or haven't been built yet uh project how do you see all of that tying into that uh the educational system and to help those communities of the future be successful and to prosper and to deal with the problems of not only the 21st century the 22nd and 23rd and on down the road well i think you have to go back to what what is the definition of a community today uh historically that community has been a physical community but because of technology computer the internet not only are people in a physical community they're also in a digital community and and how how do we define those two and how are those two connected um and and so as being a part of those two communities then the next piece is how do we educate our children to function in these two communities and to discern what citizenship looks like in these two communities you know the the the thing i find interesting is that there are communities across the united states that are beginning to think differently and beginning to to see the weak signals of people working remotely where i live currently in tolahoma tennessee uh the public utilities here has run broadband internet to every household so every household in tullahoma the city of about 20 000 folks has access to rapid robust reliable internet and from here we can conduct business globally so the next question is how do we how do we prepare kids to fit into this new community um another community i'm aware of is florence alabama florence alabama is now recruiting uh folks off-site workers to move to florence again because they realize that the folks that are working remotely generally are making better salaries uh are better educated and that's kind of the profile of folks they would like to have come live in their community and so it all gets back to understanding yes you're going to have to have uh the fizzle community but then you're also going to have to have the digital community and then through that wins then what does the educational system need to look like to prepare these kids to work in this environment but also to connect and then how does that going to affect local school districts in the funding mark because you would have a physical school district but if you're having students learn what other students say in philadelphia or chicago or kansas city or they're learning from home are they still under the auspices of the of the local school district uh what kind of governance is there going to be in place to support this and then you know along with that it gets back to the funding how is all this going to be funded is it going to be a look is it going to be a responsibility of the local school district to fund it is it going to be a responsibility of the state to fund each child's education or does some money come from the federal government um all of this is is all in flux right now and then not only defining the community and how you're going to pay for it the challenge is re-teaching or providing educators with professional development that can teach in this new modality and and that's a challenge because a lot of teacher prep programs colleges and universities don't have the capacity to teach to train teachers to teach in this modality and so um uh in in trying to do a complete system reboot um to fit these new what what a new community looks like um there'll be a lot of pain and there'll be a lot of um a learning curve and but to get to the other side uh it'll be fantastic it'll it'll be a it'll be the dawn of a new age of mankind if if you you've touched upon my next question you've covered a large part of it right here but if if the president of the united states or an educational commission or the governor of iowa or whoever came to you and said you've got such a vast experience in the educational system if you could create an educational system for the future what would be the components and you've elaborated on a large number of them are there others that would be included in this and i don't know if you do an urban rural breakdown on that or not because now if you're in the virtual age you can be any place to wear i think you mentioned urban and suburban i think those old boundaries of community specifically if you're in a digital community are going to melt away and you know what i have found in my 40 years of teaching both in urban rural and suburban settings is kids are kids and um so what what i think we need to do or if the governor or someone was coming i'd say we need to create a three-tiered educational system where the first tier would be teaching kids how to learn teaching them about themselves individually discerning what their skills and abilities are this would historically have been your elementary set preschool city teaching kids how to read you know the anti-geo learn to read and then you can read to work but but spending that first part of the educational and not sifting and soaring kids by chrono chronological age first grade second grade third grade we're looking at the child olistically and when they have mastery of those skills moving them forward you know one of the problems in education today is a lot of children who master things and are ready to go on to the next thing they have to be held back so they can keep up with so that their peers can keep up so you you design a system where you the first set tier is learning how to learn learning about yourself the second tier uh is beginning to take which would be traditionally your middle school setting uh doing interest surveys and really diving into what are your abilities what are your skills and help the child to discern passion and profession what are you passionate about what do you like to do and then could that translate into a profession um or could that translate into some kind of contribution to mankind right and and then in high school before you get to college but in a high school setting uh putting kids out into the world connecting them with practitioners in whatever field or trade their interest in and and building up capacity that way so that when a child exited the k-12 system at least they would have some kind of employable job skills that they could at least get a start on life and uh not incur the huge college loan debt that many of them have today and start making a contribution the story i like to tell i think i may have shared with you earlier bill is is my wife pam uh went to a vocational high school in des moines iowa and got her nursing training and graduated at 18 with her lpn nursing license and was able to go immediately to work in the hospital and so from 18 to 23 when she met me she was gainfully employed had money in the bank bought a new car and and we the system as we have it now today kids exit high school really and truly with no marketable skills and so you know how we need to provide them we need to provide them with opportunities so that what they're learning connects to um how they can support themselves how they can make a contribution i'm sorry please no i was gonna say somebody asked me that's what i would tell that's what you would do put that on paper i think that will sell i think so you're talking about your wife and her skills and today she's still a very i guess in great demand even virtually is she not with her skills she can provide tremendous technical assistance living in tennessee to maybe people in iowa or kentucky and kind of the rest of the story is as she has gone through her medical career as a nurse we have moved around and everywhere we've moved she's been able to get a job and when we uh lived in central iowa and i moved to a superintendent position in northeast iowa she became the virtual nurse for a outpatient surgery center in des moines and so as we have moved from from des moines to cresco from cresco to columbia tennessee and now from columbia tennessee to tolahoma tennessee my wife is still employed as the virtual nurse with that same outpatient surgery center in des moines isle so she's there and that's the important thing that's very good well one issue we didn't talk about were very out of time unfortunately but very briefly i've often heard educators say that you'll never see anything more political than a school board meeting now you would know a lot more about that than i would but they say that all different ideas come in and people have their turf their political turf their their jurisdictional turf whatever it may be but one one issue how do you see this issue of climate change it seems now that to me anyway and to most scientists that the evidence is overwhelming that climate change is taking place but there's still a lot of climate change deniers i'll say skeptics maybe deniers in the correct word but uh do you find that that's an issue that is being taught uh in a very scientific way in the schools and again i don't want to broad brush every school and every district with that but there are some people who don't want it in the schools they would rather have a creationism approach is has that been a major challenge in the local school district the locally elected school board has the final say they have the all power and superintendents are hired to implement what the board wants and the superintendent can only move a district as far as the school board wants to go you mentioned climate change another thing here recently were the masks with the covid19 and you know local school boards depending on where you're at in the united states have had different pers you know either believing that jacob 19 is real or or not and and so a locally elected school board in that it has control over what the kids uh end up doing as far as global or climate change or coven 19 um it sometimes creates a frustration because if you're say an urban school board has a different perspective than a rural school and here recently out in california i believe it was la county that the school board members made some disparaging remarks about patrons of the district and they all had to resign and and i guess the point being is that the locally elected school board you are correct is the most it is is highly politicized and in some instances board members get elected not necessarily for educating the children but changing the basketball coach or changing the football coach and it's those local issues that that creep into the local school district so again if you're looking at a a new design of a school of a school district where does the board fit into the equation and as i mentioned earlier is you know whoever's doing the funding is going to have a say so if a local school board is doing most of the funding they're going to have a say but the state is the state's going to have a safe and if the federal government is so be it ideally it'd be such that it'd be great if the parents were the ones that had the say in adopting either the realization of climate change or wearing a mask with kobit 19. well john carver these are extremely important issues and they're going to become even more important as we move forward into 2021 but i want to thank you so very much for a very interesting and a very informative program i'm bill miller thank you for joining us today on global connections television [Music] you

Previously to using airSlate SignNow, I had to wait for the clients to print out documents to sign and scan back to me. This was an issue because not everyone has a printer at home. airSlate SignNow has eliminated that issue. The time savings and turnaround time are by far the best feature. It's super easy to learn and use airSlate SignNow. I love how I can make templates and just make a copy for quick reference
