hey guys welcome back to another video today i'll share with you how i got a job in one of the top five banks in canada without any prior banking experience and what you can do to increase your chances so my name is salum and i'm nishant and let's get started if you have been watching our videos then that means that you are planning to or you have already moved to canada and you probably already know which are the top five banks in canada but in case you are wondering then here they are in no particular order cibc td rbc scotia bank and bank of montreal there are other banks as well where you can try your luck but majority of job postings in banking is made available by these top five banks because of their shared market size this video will especially be helpful for you if you are looking to enter into the banking field in canada regardless of whether you have any prior banking experience or not and also if you are a student and we have mentioned in a lot of our previous videos that if you are immigrating to canada having a backup plan is really really important so even if you are not looking for a career in banking right now still it is smart to be aware about this field because a career in banking could be your backup plan considering a lot of you will probably be moving to toronto and toronto is the financial hub and there are ample opportunities in this field before we dive into the details let me share two important tips that are generally missed first research about the company what the company does and understand what the job is all about this will help you in the interview because in every interview they will ask you two questions why this company and why this job and if you are not going to answer this convincingly then don't even bother with the interview at all second if you are clueless what exactly you need to do to get a particular job then read a ton of job descriptions and linkedin profiles of people in canada who are working in similar positions this will give you cues as to what a company is looking for in a candidate and what courses certifications and credentials are in trend and if you see some of them repeating again and again then you get the idea now let's first talk about the case if you already have some banking experience or a similar experience in your home country so the first thing that you would want to do is to start leveraging your existing experience to your advantage and start applying for the trolls that you desire and see how it goes be but do note that this is a very competitive field and even with your existing experience you might be a little behind in the priority line this is because you do not have the knowledge or the experience about the canadian financial market or the banking system yet so our first tip for those of you with prior banking experience is consider getting some recognized credentials one option is doing the canadian securities course that is csc which is offered by the canadian securities institute also known as csi we will leave a link for the csi website in the description box below so the csc course is like the first step in your ladder to various other career options in banking such as mutual funds sales representative investment representative investment advisor financial planner and many more so yet retail but if you are looking to work in the back office compliance risk management or research analysis even then you'll find most of the relevant certifications on the cse website we will also provide in the link a link in the description box where you can find the courses that you need to do based on the career path of your interest but what we have noticed on the csc website is that for most of these fields in banking the most relevant certifications to start with is the csc course and the second tip is consider applying for entry level positions in banks as well such as teller customer service representative and financial service representatives even if you were in a junior or mid management in your home country because we feel that if all else fails especially in this tough covert tanks putting a foot in the door is more important than worrying about where you start from now the second category is if you are a working professional but you do not have any experience working in the banking or the financial industry and i fall in this category so how did i get a job in one of the top five banks well there were three things that helped me so the first thing that helped me was getting some canadian experience so in one of our previous videos where we shared how was our first year living in canada i shared that the first role that i got here was an entry level position in a health sector even though the role was not the most desirable because it was not relevant to my field or it had little to offer in terms of career growth but i'm still so thankful for that canadian experience because working in the administration department not just that i learn about the canadian work culture but i also gained the canadian customer service experience which i believe to be the most desirable skills that banks are looking for in a candidate because be the teller a customer service representative a financial service representative investment representative or even investment advisors or even financial planner in any of these roles you will be working or dealing with clients on a daily basis now the second thing that helped me was getting some relevant credentials which helped me introduce to the canadian investment market the course that i chose to do was the canadian investment funds course that is cifc which is offered by the ifse we will leave a link for the website in the description box i could have done the csc course as well which we mentioned a little earlier in the video but i'm glad that i chose to do the cifc course first the reason i did the cifc course was we had an informational interview with one of the bank managers who informed us that having a cifc for entry level positions is almost becoming like a norm so if at least if you do the cifc course you become a consideration for the hiring manager and secondly csv is much more intensive and expensive costing you around 1200 on the other hand a cifc costs you around 400 and i do believe that doing this eifc course did give me a competitive edge during my interview process and later when i joined the position and the bank needed me to do the csc course they paid for it and then there was the job search strategy canadian style resume and interview preparation but because these are not specific to banking and nishant has a background in hr and he helped me prepare a ton in this aspect so he is planning to cover these topics in the future videos so stay tuned now the third category is if you are a student yes you can work in banks too even if you are studying in canada right now unlike in india students here often work part-time jobs and as somehow that only the international students work part-time jobs to cover their education fee but even the canadian students who are born and brought up here they also work part-time not only to cover the expenses but to gain some experience and once you move here you will find a lot of students working in retail stores like walmart ikea costco and even fast food chains like mcd and tim hortons this is good because they are getting much needed canadian experience and service industry jobs are respectable jobs in canada because most canadians have worked in them in their student life hence they see these jobs with a lot of respect but my suggestion is drive banks as well especially if you are doing a course in business commerce marketing finance or even accounting having industry experience while studying will give you an edge when you're out in the market for your first full-time job now the great thing is that that most entry-level jobs in banks such as a teller or personal banking associate are actually student-friendly because most often they are part-time and if you are sincere and put in the efforts there's a great chance that the management will notice eventually when you finish your course the management might offer you a permanent position or even a promotion of course given there's an availability but even if this doesn't happen you still get the precious experience and a better professional network so keep applying for these part-time entry-level positions in bank and also consider doing some certifications as well i would not suggest doing a csc at this stage when you're still a student because csc is quite intensive and also costly csc is more suitable for people who already have some banking or financial experience also i had some students in my linkedin connections message me saying that they failed the csc exam by just a few months csc can be quite difficult especially when you are studying and you're enrolled in a college or a university so here my suggestion would be to you could do an introductory course such as this canadian investment fund scores also known as cifc which is what i did now let's talk about some other things that can help you get a job in bank so first of all you will need to submit an online application but if you do not get any response then you can visit the branch along with the copies of your resume and request to talk to the branch manager you might not be lucky every time so in that case just drop your resume at the bank and you might get a call later but if you are able to meet the manager then do not straight away ask for a job first try to express your interest to work with them try to explain why you are interested and why you could be a great fit for a particular role and then ask if there is any such requirement in their branch or if you already know that there is an opening in their branch then just tell them that you saw this opening online and was hoping if you could be considered for this particular role and if you are able to leave a good impression and manager finds you to be a suitable candidate then you might get an interview opportunity at a future date this strategy was quite helpful before covert but now we can only hope that things will get normal and you can start applying this strategy again so
