must remember that you know someone will say from the hr team or the recruiting team hey go online and go to the career page and apply there and that's fine and i think you're supposed to do that but the truth is that's not the reason why you'll get the job majority of the people who just apply online will never get the job and that's a you know dirty insider secret uh that i think most people don't know about it's not like they're trying to do something negative it's just that you know your chances are very very very low when you apply just online on that online portal so in today's video i want to tell you you know why that's not the right strategy to follow and why there are some other strategies that are you know going to be more helpful to you and increase your chances by a lot so here we go so first of all let's talk about you know why companies ask you to apply online first of all the job is online or posted online is because a lot of companies have to legally post it online especially the large companies and by the way when i talk about jobs i'm talking about everything from applying for a small startup an up and coming cool company that you really want to work for or even the largest companies like goldman sachs of the world googles of the world so this applies across the board for all the different companies so when you when these companies have a role that's popped up they'll post it online because they're legally supposed to do it and at the same time because they have these career portals you know any job that comes through the hr platform of their own their hr software gets posted automatically now when you do apply to that job it doesn't just automatically go to the decision maker and that's the big misconception the other misconception that people don't realize is that everybody in in the world can see this job posting right so this job posting is not just something that only you can see obviously or only people that you know search it can see this job post posting gets propagated across the entire industry across the entire web so the same job posting that goldman sachs posts on their career page goes on to indeed goes on to different university career portals goes on to their own internal networks so literally everybody millions and millions of people can see this job posting so automatically you know millions or hundreds of thousands of people are applying for this one job posting which basically means for you that your chances of even getting an interview is super super super low now let's just say you do apply what happens next right when you do apply for a role that's posted on a career page so let's just say google.com career what happens is it goes to the you know the client the um candidate management system right so let's call them you know cms right um or or talent management system right so let's call it tms actually i remember it's called ats application tracking system right so a lot of these companies have an ats software some sort of ai base which they call it's not really ai based is pretty much a database and and these systems will accept your application and they'll store it amongst all the other thousands and thousands of applications they will receive now what happens is per your application you've you know put in some data points where you went to school where you live what's your immigration situation like all of those things it'll basically start filtering you and bucketing you in terms of you know do you belong in the pool that should be reviewed versus in a pool that isn't relevant right so that's how automatically electronically you will get bucketed now once you do get bucketed let's just say hopefully out of the million people who applied if you're one of the few people who actually you know make the yes bucket or like let's review this candidate's bucket then you're going to be then sent over to a human so this is your first human interaction but not your personal human interaction this is where your resume and your packet your your application packet will have its first interaction with a human now the part that's annoying or that most most people don't know is that you're not having an interaction with the human that's in the group that you applied for so you might have applied to let's say goldman sachs investment banking in the tech group right in the tmt group but right now the application is not being reviewed by anyone from that group is probably going to be reviewed by someone who's at a junior level in the hr organization right similarly let's just say you're applying to google or you're applying to a startup majority of the time there's going to be some junior hr person who gets your application and reviews it now when they review it physically they look at it and they'll be like okay you know checks the box good formatting all those things and then they'll you know move it up the food chain to a senior hr member now this is obviously it's going to happen at a bigger organization smaller startups don't have multi-layer hr teams so let's say you know your application passes that one junior person's filter they think you know you have a decent enough profile for their senior to review then your application goes to the senior hr member the senior hr member is usually a member who is the liaison between the group you've applied for and the hr organization within that company so goldman sachs tmt is the group that you want to apply for this is goldman sachs hr the lead person from hr here who's working with goldman sachs tmt is now going to review your application now if he or she likes your application this is the second human then they'll be like okay you know what let's move it over to tmt and get them to review it right now what happens is someone junior at the tmt group right someone listens an analyst or a summer associate or an associate will get your resume and review now at this point this person this associate probably has a thousand resumes that are equally as good as yours right and they're reviewing it so just think about that funnel right you went from a million applications to maybe 100 000 applications to 10 000 applications now you're gone down to 1 000. so you're lucky you're very lucky so far but still you know the journey is not over and now this person's going to review it he's he might accept you in the yes bucket so from 100 people he'll reduce it to 40 maybe maybe 30 and then you'll go through a first round interview a screener right then if you pass that screener then he'll be like okay you know what let's invite them to the to the next round of processes so this is where you'll you know invite get invited to a super day which is a final round interview or any of those things now the unfortunate thing is now you'll probably reach people who are the real decision makers right these are the folks like vice presidents managing directors or in a startup it could be the founders or head of product head of technology head of marketing those kind of people the people that will actually decide on your candidacy now the unfortunate thing that you can see by now is you start from a million people to ten ten thousand to one thousand to one hundred to fifty to thirty maybe but look at all the filters you know electronic filters like that application tracking system and obviously the humans right all the you know i don't want to say non-relevant humans but not the decision makers right all of those people have had a say in your career if you go through just the online portal and by the time you reach uh you know the person who actually decides unfortunately a long time has gone by and your competition's just so high and your chance of even getting an interview is extremely low so in my opinion you should apply online but that should only be because you're supposed to apply online it shouldn't be the only thing you do here's what you should do so let's say you want to work for goldman sachs tmt that's one example i'll give you the other example i'll give you is let's say you want to work for a very small startup right so let's start from a very small startup first if you're applying for a very small startup how big can the team be 20 people 30 50 maybe 100 right not more than that let's just say a series a series b startup but let's say it's one of the best startups in the world the way i would recommend you apply to some of those companies is actually write a thoughtful email to the ceo to the ceo of that company directly and don't be shy oh my god this person's a ceo i'm just a junior nobody don't worry about that every company that i've applied to as a as a first from a startup perspective or even when i was looking for fundraising and any of those things and you guys know that i'm a big proponent of cold emailing definitely write a thoughtful email it'll take you 10 minutes maximum if you really want this job but it will go directly in the inbox of the decision maker because now what happens is let's just say in the small startup your email goes to the ceo and she likes it she's like wow this is great you know i love this candidate's hustle i love what he or she's done i love everything that you know what they're about and they've you know been proactive and they've reached out to me personally now if she likes you it's game over because now what happens is you basically reach the top of the hill right and it's much easier for someone like her to roll a stone downhill right so she can basically take your candidacy and roll it down the hill and tell everybody else and her team be like hey take a look at this candidate i like her or like him let's give him a shot so automatically you have skipped all of those filters from ats systems to junior hr senior hr liaison junior you know team person mid-level team person all the red tape in the middle layer of these unfortunate organizations right is what you've skipped and that is awesome so that's for like a small organization now let's just say you want to apply for goldman sachs goldman sachs you're not going to email whoever the current ceo is i don't know back in the day was lloyd blankfein but let's just say it's is is jimi hendrix that's the last next name that's in my head so let's just say you want to apply to that don't email jimmy right that wouldn't make sense because jimmy's not even gonna get your email most likely for a fortune 500 company the ceo's emails checked by an assistant or someone who's helping him so my recommendation in that situation is figure out which group you want to work for because in large companies you know there are smaller groups and organizations and those organizations are somewhat very independent in how they hire so for example for me when i worked at morgan stanley i wanted to work at morgan stanley tech which was a very specific group in menlo park so for me if i want to email someone i would email the head of that group or or an md in that group who i would find on linkedin or some other place point is find the decision maker in the organization that you want to work for and directly email them now i'll have another video on how to find email address and stuff but that is not the hard part the hard part is majority of people 99 of people just go online they go to the career page they apply and then they chill and they sit back they're like oh i got this no you don't right unfortunately your application is going to go missing in this you know vast space and abyss of recruiting world and you're never going to be found so my recommendation is definitely email the right person the decision maker short email thoughtful don't be more than half a page right attach your resume to it and then let it go if it works out great right you've skipped a bunch of you know red tape if it doesn't work out no worries there are other
