hi guys how's it going it's mishkay here so a few months back i posted a video on youtube about how i got a bank job in canada what did i study in terms of like you know getting the job and i got a massive massive response from all of you you know in the comments section below and so many questions and it was honestly very overwhelming with the amount of questions i received and you know a lot of dms on linkedin a lot of dms on instagram so i thought that let me actually just make a video addressing all your questions and concerns you know probably i so i did choose a few comments from my youtube channel i took some you know questions from my linkedin and my instagram and whatnot and i thought i could just make a concise video where i'm answering all of these questions because i think that if i answer one question not only the person who asked me would benefit from it but a lot of people who have the same question at the back of their mind and they haven't asked me could benefit that as well so even though i make videos mostly on the investing niche and like the financial literacy side i thought that i just think if you know if it helps even one person out there and if i can answer all those questions then why the hell not right all right so the way i would do is i'm just gonna probably read um the question that i have on here and uh just take it one question at a time and probably because i received so many questions in different ways but at the end of the day there's the same answer for all these questions and they asked the same thing so i thought of like grouping all of those together and sort of responding in a manner which is concise uh effective and also sort of advantageous to the person who's getting those answers um okay so the first question i have is um can you please share exactly what you do as a teller the challenges you face and how long is the training so you know firstly tellers are the front line of a retail bank so if you walk into a bank the first person that you deal with is a tello so you know for your normal deposits of money withdrawals your money orders and whatnot all the very basic banking needs is what a teller does right so in terms of just we are called the front line of any retail banks you walk into a bank those people right behind the counters that you see those are your tellers so basically anything basic that you need in terms of banking money transfers money orders withdrawals deposit what not we are your go-to person and how long is the training so you need to understand when you're a teller the training differs from each bank and they have different training modules and whatnot the bank that i worked in the training period was two weeks i know i have friends in other banks in the training period is shorter or longer so it really depends it really depends as to how fast are you able to grasp the trading material but i know a lot of especially canadian banks and retail banks they're okay if you're taking a little bit longer if you are getting the concepts right i've had the opportunity to work with great people in the bank and i had an amazing manager so it was it was awesome to sort of take my own time and learn right so and then the other one is could you do a video on how to be on banking teller interviews um i think that's some more it's a lengthy answer so i'm gonna be as short and as direct to the point honestly if there's one thing that i can tell you guys to be on interviews is be yourself and don't you know don't look at it as an interview but look at it as you're talking to a friend or that you're having a conversation because you know when we think of interviews we think that it's going to be question and answers they ask you questions you just got to answer that but they you are as much as invested in knowing what company you're working for so even though they ask you questions be calm about it just have it as a conversation conversation goes two ways right okay so the next question is that what is the salary that you can expect as a teller again there are so many variables to this because it depends if you have first it depends on how much experience you have right if you have a lot of experience they're obviously going to pay you more if you and then it depends on are you working part-time are you full-time there depends on if you have any um you know certifications that you've done or not but when i started out as a teller i was paid 14 25 per hour and i was a student so i was working part-time but uh again i think uh it's so i worked in 2018's i am sure as hell that you know the minimum wage that someone has paid for a job here has increased and so has the salaries of patellar hopefully have increased accordingly as well because inflation does have a role to pay but again it depends um but what i would say too is if you are a student and actually you are a student sorry so she said that she is studying right now so and if you have no previous experience i would say that your main focus should be getting that banking experience in canada don't be too bothered about how much you'll be getting paid because banks pay you slightly more than any part-time retail jobs so along with getting paid better you also get experience which is invaluable so yeah um [Music] what's the other question the other question is that um suppose that if i have a degree in arts or marketing can i still do a banking job as a tello okay and what subjects are you studying okay so i i graduated but when i was studying when i was working as a tele i was studying as well um but it honestly doesn't matter what's your background because i worked with people who are doing masters in arts or who are doing computer science honestly like it doesn't matter what's your background or it doesn't matter what degree you're pursuing because for a canadian for being a teller and this is just for a teller even if you do your certifications like csc so csc is a certification where it's called canadian securities course so if you are doing the certification you have passed that you know it doesn't matter what you what field you've studied from or done your degree if you've gotten that certificate and you can you know learn the training modules faster it doesn't matter honestly like because i've worked with students from like when i was working and they were not in the finance industry or didn't study anything business related and they were still working with me so i would say that if you can if you have great communication skills and if you can talk to the person on the other side and you have you can do a certificate just so you know to push your chances up a little higher then i would say that it doesn't matter what's your degree it doesn't matter what background you you're coming from as long as you're honestly for a teller let me tell you this you need great communication skills and you need to be able to just understand how the work how the thing works it's not that complicated so they teach you most of the things in the training period so training is basically two types one training is you know you read and you see you know these videos on line and you study from them and the second part of the training is that it's called shadowing so that means you actually stand next to an experienced teller and learn from them and honestly if you can do that if you can do the same thing in mcdonald's like you know we have gotten when i first started working my first job was in mcdonald's and i had no idea how to like work in mcdonald's right so if i could learn that even in that i was given training online and i was asked to shadow someone more experienced than me and learn from them literally literally i'm i kid you or not literally the same thing happened when i was a teller in a bag i was given training menus and i was asked to sort of shadow someone so don't worry about what background you're coming from it only matters as to how fast you can learn and how what energy you bring are you positive are you communicative are you smiling all of that so because it's a teller is like the face of the bank right so you just got to make sure that you're doing all that otherwise it really doesn't matter all right um the important things what are the important things to remember and how how can someone be careful as a teller if someone has never handled cash okay so there are those questions where they say that how can someone be this if someone never did and they're indirectly asking about themselves um if you've never handled cash before if you've never done what a teller does i have never done what a teller does because when i was studying back home in india and then i came here no experience in terms of anything you learn that's how you handle cash you learn you get better at it you just have to sort of have an attitude of learning all the time and if you have any questions so my number one thing is that if i had any questions at all i would honestly just go to my supervisor i would not think that i know it i'm not gonna risk it because i'm dealing with money right so i'm like i'm not gonna risk this but if i had one thing what i can sort of like say is this if you have questions ask they just be honest about having no experience at all and in terms of just handling cash if you are in a tough spot just just reach out for help people are more than willing to help you and where i worked they were more than willing to help me i was like damn i'm confused sometimes and i always receive that so if you if someone doesn't have experience in handling cash don't even worry about it you will get training you will have people around you to help you you can ask them just sort of make sure that you don't overwhelm yourself and don't get panicky when um some you know a trans or deposit or transfer hasn't done right just keep your calm and i'm sure that you know your supervisors or managers will be up and ready to help you okay um so someone's asked me that it seems getting a bank job in canada is not that easy should one start applying from india and apply for pr my daughter is already in a government back in india as an officer since the last two years okay um so firstly the first part of the question is that if you don't again there's so many variables to it right um if you don't have uh firstly i don't know if your daughter has a work permit or not a work permit is a basically a permit that's given to an individual when they enter the country and just allows them to work in the country just shows it could be for a year it could be for two years three years depends on your application process um so even if you do apply for jobs and you don't have a work permit you don't have a residency no hr person in the bank is going to second look your application that means that they're not going to go forward with your application because to be able to legally work in canada you either need to be on a study permit you either need to be on a work permit or you either need to be a resident right that's the reasons why so if she if your daughter is in india and even though she has amazing work experience the best way would for her to be is to be in the country that she's applying from um come here on a permit show that she can legally work and then apply to these places and her work experience will definitely definitely be helpful and this video is going overboard so i don't know how many of you are still with me but if you are thank you so the last question is that um do you always need a certification to break into the banking industry yes and or no because it's not as a teller especially it's not required for you to have a certification but if you do your chances of getting a call from human resources is definitely definitely much more higher because um it's like a one plus thing it's not it's not going to hurt you to get a certification it's not required but it definitely puts you out there because there are going to be a lot of job applications for the same profile so your chances of getting a call back or an interview is definitely higher if you have a certification okay um [Music] can i get okay so i get this question a lot um you know i i have work experience from india but then can i get a job in canada while staying in india i don't know if i don't know a lot of people i don't know any people i don't know anyone who's gotten a job while staying in india in canada like i know a lot of people staying in canada they don't have jobs in canada so i don't know a lot of people um who have done that it could be a possibility but i am not sure um yeah it would be cool though but i'm not sure if you can get that okay uh last question and i'm done you guys hi mishka i got my pr and moving to canada soon i would love to start my career in banking please tell which course would be the best to start with i have no experience in banking and things awesome so if you're here welcome and if you want to work in banking no experience in banking and what certificates check out canadian securities course it's called csc or investment funds in canada ific check these two courses out i will have the links down below again i'm not affiliated this is just to help you guys these are two certificates that i personally did so yeah if you don't have bank experience do these two certificates it's probably going to up your chances because it just those certificates gives you an overview of the banking industry the sort of banking accounts we have here you know what are the tax saving accounts and what not how do taxes work uh how do investment accounts work and whatnot so it's definitely going to give you um more of a theory knowledge of canadian banking system and then that's also going to be in addition to your if you have no experience that's fine um but it's definitely going to you know up your chances of getting that job all right yeah so most questions i get is um can i stay in india while getting a job i don't know if any um if you are from a different background b-tech um b-com becomes mine like engineering arts whatever nothing business related you can still get a banking job you do your certifications csc and ifix you don't have any experience in banking that's fine if you can communicate well if you have if you bring a positive vibe the manager likes you you've done your theory certificates they are okay training you on it okay
