hey guys I don't know about you but have you ever seen those big blue semis without the steel on the bed in the back well I followed on those trucks here today to figure out how their make and looks like ones leaving now so I know I'm in the right spot bull craft let's check it out all right so I followed the trucks the trucks brought me here to pull craft but I'm still trying to figure out what's on the back of those I can help you with that huh looks like I got a good start and you are sorry Anthony I get a little carried away but I've really been trying to figure out what you guys do here for a long time not a problem I'm Jeff Gallup I'm the production manager we basically build joist and deck for the non residential commercial construction market we service 12 states from Norfolk Nebraska there's actually seven vole crafts located across the United States so you know what type of people work out here how many different types of jobs do you guys have we have a job for everybody basically a guy a person needs to have a high school education they come to work here we have several entry-level jobs whether it's in production finance could be a clerk detailing we actually hired Detailers off of the street and trained them up ourselves as well we also have something for someone that wants to have an associate's degree we hire tremendous amount of maintenance folks through an associate's degree program as well as Detailers and then we have professional level jobs as well engineering accounting finance those types of things we love to bring folks in at the ground level entry level position numerous success stories all through new core folks have started out as janitors or is a traffic person like myself and worked our way up through the ranks we even have general managers that have come from the ground floor that's awesome tremendous benefits of working in Nucor probably none bigger than job security we've never laid off in the history of our company no matter how bad the economy so basically if I'm hearing you correctly if you have a good work ethic and you want to work hard this is the place for you all right well one more thing please explain to me the whole blue truck thing and the stuff that they're carrying and I got to figure that out absolutely Kelsey down and shipping and be glad to help you out that plant you got a copy I gotta know how do all those blue trucks know where they're going well that's my job please tell me about it so I work in shipping and the trucks get dispatched all kind of around the u.s. I tracked the trucks all day make sure that they're getting to the job sites on time and I do all the freight invoices afterwards after the load has been delivered so for your position what kind of education do did you need I have an associate's degree in Business Administration that I got here in town at Northeast Community College so why did you decide to work here and bring your talents as a wizard to voll craft well my dad has been with Nucor for 28 years and I watched what it did for our family and I knew that that's exactly what I wanted to do what would you say is the best thing about working here I would say just the relationships that I've got to build with all the co-workers and I'm a very fast paced moving person and this job keeps me very very busy so what about the city in general do you like um I like the small-town atmosphere that it gives us and just being close to family so another thing I like about Norfolk is it's very easy to get involved in the community I'm also the gymnastics coordinator for the Norfolk Family YMCA go.you that's true anyway you said something earlier that caught my attention and I still don't know what it is but I'm guessing it has to do with those blue trucks what is joist and deck and how do I find out more about it well send you down to Jordan and Carl and production and they'll tell you all about it hey how's it going good I'm Jordan here in Sec plant I work maintenance here okay Anthony I'm just here looking around this place is huge I'll tell you what I can tell you a little more about it where it's quieter all right that'd be very hot basically my job consists of keeping the plant up and running on a daily basis keeping track of the PM's the preventive maintenance and also looking at upgrading new equipment and keeping everyone safe and working as efficiently as they can so what kind of a education do you have to have did you know you know I graduated high school in Battle Creek and I from there I went to college at Northeast Community College and I got a two-year degree in electrochemical I actually did an internship here at volt craft and I never left awesome so what about volt craft makes it a great place to work great guys to work with the company treats you very well you can support your family working here so many opportunities to move up and not only is it a great place to work but what makes this a great community to work in you know why do you like living in Norfolk you know North works small enough when something happens the community comes together but yet it's large enough that got so many options to do things so you don't necessarily build the products at your job here who does that well it's actually a group of guys that are building the products but Carla our line supervisor could probably tell you a lot more about it than I could all right so go find Carl yeah all right thanks man yep Thank You Carl yes sir hey Orlando nice to meet you I was just hanging about what Jordan over at the dex plant and he told me I need to talk to you about other products are actually made already why don't we go out and take a look show me yes sir all right back home with the PBE I guess so what's your position here I'm a production supervisor mainly entails uh taking care of my people and making sure that they have the tools any of you can job done safely and effectively but overall I supervise a Jewish production line that assembles that steel joist and steel girder and can you take me through the process of how that's made absolutely we get orders from shop orders and then from that point we line them up put them out to the shop and they take that order and cut their steel according to that and then we assemble the joist to build it from that order we all work together to accomplish the task accomplish it safely we're definitely one big family what's one thing that you really enjoy that makes this a great place to work thing for me that makes Volker Africa Nucor the best place to work is the fact that and the 12 years I've been here the economy's took in some major downturns but not one time have we laid off one individual due to lack of work we just may do it and nobody ever has lost a job because of this Wow that was an impressive tour you know besides working here why is Norfolk or such a great place to live for me and my family it's just about the right size community it's not it's not a big city I don't have to worry about crime or anything like that but yet there's still things to do and it's it's home for me so I have one last question out there you had mentioned that you know orders come in who do they come in from again engineering and if I wanted to talk about where they come from who would I need to go see go see Joe down on him yeah all right great to meet you thank you meet you hey are you Joe hey yes nice to meet you Anthony Carl sent me down and said you could tell me a little bit about how they get their job orders so what is your job title what do you do so I'm a design engineer obviously and design choice but a lot of what we do is review contract drawings and assist the Detailers with transferring information from the contract drawings on to our voll craft specific plans once we transfer that information down to our design engineers we we designed the joists we design each member of the joist for the load specified on the contract drawings once we do that we pass that information down to production to actually fabricate that based off of the members we designed and how long have you been employed here what kind of education do you have I've actually been with Nucor for nine years and I was lucky enough to do two summer internships so while I acquired my Master Science degree and civil engineering I worked two summers here and then started full-time once I acquired my my degree and why do you like working here what makes you know this is such a great company to work for the people the people and the culture is number one and what about the community itself outside of work you know why why is Norfolk such a great place to live I'm from South Dakota originally and so small-town South Dakota North fork's a lot similar it's it's bigger than where I'm from but yet it's got that small-town atmosphere and it's got plenty of amenities to go along with it so you would you had mentioned detailing in this process from where we are now to getting it made you know what's detailing prior to the information getting to me detailing takes care of it so I'm gonna send you down to talk to nice to meet you Anthony so I hear you're detailing specialists here basically what I do is I take a set of contract drawings and I transfer those onto the computer screen asking customer and engineers and sales any questions that I might have and then once those are answered I send it down the line awesome what kind of education do you need to you know have a position like this I went through the two-year drafting program here at Northeast Community College so what what about working here makes this a great place to work you know um the teamwork that we have I feel you know everyone kind of works together helps each other out in any way they can the camaraderie with each of us so and outside of work why is Norfolk a great place to live you know it's it's not that big of a city but it's big enough to where there's something to do every every weekend every night whether it be a concert or something downtown so how do you know what to do in your job sales books in order Alison sales boys and you are Maria Molly nice to meet you finance okay some finance and sales working together right a sales not a sale until you get paid huh well that makes sense well Anthony from detailing sent me down here to talk to you because he says he can't get started until he has an order come in right is that what you do yeah I'm a regional sales manager here and I help price jobs for a lot of the different district offices so you're kind of the beginning of the process and so finance would you kind of be like the end of the process what do you do once the order is shipped to the customer we invoice the customer and we get paid for it so then we received the text and that's when the sale is done so why did you guys choose this business why did you guys decide to work here I really like both craft I was first an intern out at the mill I was there during college and then got hired on so I came over here as a regional and it's been a great company to work for lots of opportunities I actually started in Memphis I worked for a decor Memphis at the little center there so my dad my mom both actually worked for new course so they worked here for my dad's worked here for 30-something years so that's kind of how I got introduced to new core and I just know it's a great family company so what about the Norfolk area do you like and you know living in this community I like the size of the town a lot and there's a lot of great families and it's also a growing place and then as far as education you know what do I need if I wanted to work here to have a position like you guys as far as education well I went to Norfolk high here in town and then I went to Wayne State College my major was in business marketing and management and as I said during college I was an intern out at the mill in sales and marketing I also went to Norfolk high and I went to the University of Nebraska and Lincoln and got my degree in accounting well thank you guys so much for telling me about what you do you know I am tired this place is very large I've walked around all day I'm gonna let myself out but it was great to meet both of you and enjoy the rest of your day thank you
